An apparatus detects a transient thermal gradient in a substrate. The apparatus is comprised of an electromagnetic radiation source configured to emit source electromagnetic radiation; a fast shutter configured to block the source electromagnetic radiation when closed, and open in response to a command to pulse the source electromagnetic radiation; a substrate support that supports a substrate disposed to emit a pulsed radiation from a back side of the substrate when the source electromagnetic radiation is pulsed through the substrate; and a detector configured to face the back side of the substrate. The detector is used to detect a transient thermal gradient in the pulsed radiation.

Apparatus for detecting a transient thermal gradient in a substrate

A cold-tunnel system is disclosed for recovery of thermal emissivity of extended targets. The cold-tunnel system is comprised of an infrared camera having a thermal imaging lens; an aperture plate having a hole aligned with the thermal imaging lens; four cold-wall panels assembled in a box pattern as a cold-tunnel assembly to form a cold tunnel; an air-blowing desiccator affixed to each cold-wall panel; an external liquid chiller to chill a reservoir of working fluid; a target under test; and an extended source blackbody reference disposed directly behind the target under test.

Cold-tunnel system and method for recovery of thermal emissivity of extended targets

The present invention is a holographic structured light generator (HSLG) for generating an array of an arbitrary number of laser beamlets from a single laser beam using a point laser light source and a hologram. In a first preferred embodiment of the present invention, a hologram having an image of four point sources in a common plane is fabricated using four point sources as the object beam, and a reference beam. A reconstruction beam, aligned identically with respect to the hologram as was the reference beam during fabrication of the hologram, is then directed at the hologram, generating the array of laser beamlets from the four point sources in the hologram. In a primary application of the HSLG, it is used to map the surface of an object in three dimensions. The HSLG is used with video cameras, computer image processing equipment and an optical spatial light modulator to yield 3-D data for use with CAD systems.
