An electrolyte for solid-state electrochemical cell comprising in solid state, a combination of lithium, phosphate and iodide and either calcium or aluminum moieties, the non-metallic moieties being in stoichiometric relationship with the metallic moieties. An advantageous electrolyte is prepared by reacting calcium iodide and lithium orthophosphate.

Solid state electrolyte

An electrolyte for a solid state lithium electrochemical cell comprising an interdiffused mixture of PI.sub.3 or BI.sub.3 and LiI and optionally Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 and cells containing such electrolyte.

Phosphorus-containing solid state electrolyte

High energy density, self-healing cathodes for use in solid state or quasi-solid state electrochemical cells having active metal, e.g. lithium, one or more of materials existing in the solid or liquid state at ordinary temperatures and selected from the group of oxides of phosphorous and boron, halides of phosphorous and boron chalcogenides of phosphorous and boron and oxyhalides of phosphorous and boron, said mass having induced therein a useable degree of electronic conductivity. One example of a means of including a useable amount of electronic conductivity is the inclusion in the cathode mass of a charge transfer complex of a polymer of the type of poly-2-vinyl pyridine.

Self healing cathodes

A solid-state electrolyte capable of lithium ion transfer comprising and interdiffused combination of a lithium metal oxide and a metal halide.

Lithium oxide halide solid state electrolyte

A solid state electrochemical cell having a lithium anode, a lithium-ion transport electrolyte and a cathode of high energy density material capable of reacting with the electrolyte and forming a stable, self-healing layer of electrolytically conductive reaction product of the electrolyte and the cathode material.
