Blends of carbonate polymer, such as a polycarbonate of bisphenol-A, and a rubber-modified copolymer, such as an acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene (ABS) resin prepared by mass, bulk or mass suspension polymerization techniques, provide articles which exhibit good low temperature physical properties and can exhibit a low gloss finish. Such blends are particularly useful in the manufacture of molded parts. Such blends are color stable and can exhibit small amounts of yellowing. Such blends are particularly useful in low temperature applications such as below about 0.degree. F.

Low temperature impact resistant carbonate polymer blends

Blends of carbonate polymer, such as a polycarbonate of bisphenol-A, and a rubber-modified copolymer, such as an acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene (ABS) resin prepared by mass, bulk or mass suspension polymerization techniques, or by agglomerating particles prepared by emulsion polymerization techniques, exhibit good physical properties and a low gloss finish. Such blends are particularly useful in the manufacture of molded parts. Such blends are color stable and exhibit small amounts of yellowing.

Low gloss carbonate polymer blends

An additive concentrate composition is composed of a carbonate polymer, a powdered additive such as a pigment, and a mixture of a film-forming adherent such as an esterified polysaccharide and a liquid diluent such as an epoxidized vegetable oil or a bis(phosphorinane), in amounts preferably less than or equal to about 1 percent based on the weight of carbonate polymer and the additive. Alternatively, the epoxidized vegetable oil may optionally be used as a bonding agent. The bonding agents have desirable properties that do not adversely affect the physical properties of the carbonate polymer in end use, and are thermally stable and color-stable.

System for bonding additives to resin particles and resulting composition

Carbonate polymer compositions comprise a carbonate polymer having dispersed therein a concentrate consisting essentially of a copolymer of an alkenyl-aromatic monomer and an .alpha.,.beta.-olefinically unsaturated nitrile monomer and a powdered or crystalline additive. The concentrates allow for good dispersion of additives in the carbonate polymer, provide for clean and efficient use of additives, and are easily processable. The copolymeric base resin does not deleteriously affect the good physical properties of the carbonate polymer with which it is blended at typical additive let down levels.

Process for preparing additive concentrates for carbonate polymers

A finely divided functional solid is readily incorporated into olefin polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene by blending a concentrate of the functional solid in a carrier of an ethylene/butene-1 copolymer with the olefin polymer. Thus prepared, these blends containing the finely divided solid are ready for fabrication into shaped articles.
