A technology is described for direction finding. An example of the technology can include executing stages of an N stage search for a direction finding estimate of a plane wave X. The stages of the N stage search include searching a search space in a calibration set having a plurality of points in space and calculating a direction finding estimate, wherein a first search space is a coarse set of points in space and subsequent search spaces selected for subsequent stages of the N stage search are increasingly finer sets of points in the space, and a solution for the direction finding estimate output by a stage of the N stage search is used to select a next search space for a next stage of the N stage search. A direction finding estimate output by a final stage of the N stage search is the final direction finding estimate.

According to one embodiment, a radome includes two dielectric layers separated by an internal layer. The internal layer is configured with an internal cooling system including a fluid channel that receives a fluid through an inlet port, conducts heat from the radome to the fluid, and exhausts the heated fluid through an outlet port.

A composite radome structure includes a first structural laminate layer having an outer radome surface, a second structural laminate layer comprising an inner radome surface, and an antenna having a screen, wherein the screen is inserted between the first and the second structural laminate layers.

According to one embodiment, a patch antenna includes a radiating layer coupled to a feed line. The radiating layer has at least one radiating element disposed on an opposite side from the feed line. The radiating layer has a moat around its perimeter forming an inner perimeter sidewall and an outer perimeter sidewall. A conductive coating may be disposed on the inner perimeter sidewall or the outer perimeter sidewall.

According to one embodiment, an integrated patch antenna may comprise a radome layer, having an outside surface and an inside surface, and a radiating layer. The radiating layer has a top surface and a bottom surface, the top surface of the radiating layer conforming to the shape of the inside surface of the radome layer. The radiating layer comprises a dielectric layer, a radiating element formed on a first side of the dielectric layer, and a moat formed in the dielectric layer around its perimeter forming an inner perimeter sidewall and an outer perimeter sidewall. The radiating layer also comprises a conductive coating disposed on the inner perimeter sidewall or the outer perimeter sidewall and a feed line disposed on a second side of the dielectric substrate.

According to one embodiment, a heat dissipation system includes an elongated radar absorbing member configured with a thermal dissipation mechanism. The radar absorbing member extends proximate a junction of a microwave antenna enclosure that houses an antenna and a radome that covers an opening in the microwave antenna enclosure. The radar absorbing member absorbs electro-magnetic energy incident upon the junction. The thermal dissipation mechanism absorbs heat generated by the absorbed electro-magnetic energy.

A dual, preferably orthogonally polarized microstrip patch antenna which includes a layer of electrically insulating material in the form of a printed circuit board. First and second sets of electrically conductive patches, preferably of copper, are disposed on one surface of the electrically insulating material, the first set adapted for transmission and/or reception of electromagnetic radiations polarized in a first direction and the second set adapted for transmission and/or reception of electromagnetic radiations polarized in a second direction. Patches of the first set are interlaced with patches of the second set. A feed for each of the patches is coupled to the opposing surface of the electrically insulating material which includes a first plurality of slots, one associated with each of the patches of the first set for polarizing the patches of the first set in the first direction and a second plurality of slots, one associated with each of the patches of the second set for polarizing the patches of the second set in the second direction. The centers of the patches of the first and second sets of patches are disposed in a straight line and the centers of adjacent patches of each of the sets of patches are spaced apart less than one wavelength of the carrier frequency of interest.
