A quick-change core drill includes an adapter and a generally tubular drill barrel. The adapter comprises a first end adapted to be removably connected to a drill spindle and a second end adapted to be removably connected to the drill barrel. The drill barrel includes an inside diameter D1, a first end, and a second end having a crown with an inside diameter D3. The first end of the drill barrel is adapted to be removably connected to the second end of the adapter such that the inside diameter D1 is at least as large as the inside diameter D3. Upon detection of a jammed core inside the drill barrel, the user can quickly and easily remove the jammed core from the drill barrel by disconnecting the drill barrel from the adapter. Since there are no obstructions present, the user can simply remove the jammed core from the first end of the drill barrel.

A plastic encapsulated bolt includes a metallic insert having a head (e.g., a hex head, square head, or other type of deformed head) and a shank. An outer plastic layer encapsulates the metallic insert and forms a plastic encapsulated head and a plastic encapsulated shank. The plastic encapsulated shank can be totally or partially threaded. In one application, the plastic encapsulated bolt is used in combination with a plastic female anchor having an internally threaded portion. The plastic female anchor preferably includes multiple sections. The plastic encapsulated bolt includes a tapered threaded nose that engages the internally threaded portion such that the sections of the plastic female anchor expand outwardly as the plastic encapsulated bolt is threaded therein, causing the anchor to engage in an interference fit with a hole, for example, in concrete.

One embodiment of a roughening device comprises a hub, a body having a wall defining a cavity, and an elastomeric material within the cavity. A plurality of cutting elements extend through holes in the wall of the body such that a base of each cutting element is positioned against the elastomeric material.

An expandable band and locking mechanism is used to install and secure a flexible sealing element, such as a rubber seal or gasket, against an internal annular surface, such as in a manhole or pipe. The expandable band is capable of expanding and being locked at various diameters. The expandable band preferably has a plurality of deviations or ribs that provide a plurality of pressure points against the sealing element. The expandable band includes a first locking region, such as an end locking portion of the band, and a second locking region, such as one or more adjustable locking elements or notches in the band. The locking mechanism preferably includes a locking member having a first locking tab for engaging with the end locking portion of the band and a second locking tab for engaging with one of the adjustable locking elements or notches in the band. The locking mechanism further includes a housing for covering the locking member and engaging the band. An intermediate biasing member between the housing and the locking member, preferably made of an elastomeric material, biases the locking member toward locking engagement with the expandable band.

An anchoring device for anchoring a threaded member such as a screw or bolt in a substrate material includes an anchoring sheath for receiving the threaded member. The anchoring sheath includes annular anchoring ribs formed around a body portion of the anchoring sheath and at least one longitudinal rib extending along at least a portion of the body portion of the anchoring sheath and extend outwardly from the anchoring sheath. In a sheath with more than one longitudinal rib, the longitudinal ribs lie in different planes which intersect at the longitudinal axis of the anchoring sheath. The anchoring sheath preferably includes top and bottom regions which have no annular or longitudinal ribs. The bottom region can have an extended length to accommodate threaded members of varying lengths and a hole providing drainage of water, ice, or other debris as the threaded member is tightened into the sheath. The top region can further include a sleeve positioned around the sheath to match the modulus of elasticity of at least the top portion of the anchoring sheath to that of the substrate, and to prevent fractures in the substrate caused by stress in the substrate. The anchoring sheath may be coated with a resilient, elastomeric layer.

Anchoring device for a threaded member

A method and apparatus for grinding a surface on a workpiece, such as a spigot on a pipe, while supporting the workpiece on the surface being ground. The grinding apparatus includes workpiece support wheels, two of which are positioned beneath the workpiece and contact the workpiece at the surface being ground. The grinding apparatus also includes a rotator mechanism, such as a motor which drives one of the workpiece support wheels in frictional contact with the workpiece outer surface, for rotating the workpiece. The grinding apparatus further includes a surface grinding mechanism, such as a motor and grinding or cutting wheel positioned generally between the two workpiece support wheels and which contacts the surface being ground. The cutter mechanism is adjustable in a vertical direction and angularly to grind an angled surface. According to the method of grinding, the grinding surface of the workpiece is maintained in contact with the two workpiece support wheels so that the workpiece self-feeds towards the surface grinding mechanism. The grinding apparatus can also include an end workpiece support to prevent horizontal movement of the workpiece, a top workpiece support to prevent vertical movement, a measuring device for measuring the depth of the grinding surface, and an adjustment control mechanism for automatically controlling the adjustment of the cutter mechanism.

Grinding apparatus and method which supports a workpiece on the surface

A liquid-filled seal for sewer pipes. The seal comprises a hollow trapezoidal cavity formed by spaced circumferentially extending walls and radially extending walls of elastomer or other material formed of substantially uniform thickness. Additional materials extending radially from the circumferentially extending walls form inner and outer annular sealing ribs that contact portions of adjacent pipes thereby to effect a seal between those sections. A non-compressible liquid fills the cavity thereby to promote uniform sealing pressure around the periphery of the pipes notwithstanding the relative position of the adjacent pipe sections.

An anchoring device for anchoring a threaded member in a substrate material includes a plastic anchoring sheath for receiving the screw. The plastic anchoring sheath includes annular anchoring ribs formed around a body portion of the anchoring sheath and at least three longitudinal ribs extending along at least a portion of the body portion of the anchoring sheath preferably parallel to a longitudinal axis of the anchoring sheath. The longitudinal ribs extend outwardly from the anchoring sheath and lie in different planes which intersect at the longitudinal axis of the anchoring sheath. The anchoring sheath preferably includes top and bottom regions which have no annular or longitudinal ribs. The plastic anchoring sheath may be coated with a resilient, elastomeric coating.

A band assembly for effecting a seal particularly adapted for use in establishing a joint between a sewer pipe and a reinforced concrete manhole riser. The seal is affected by a tapered elastomeric tubular connector boot and a clamping band member with an expansion mechanism. Wedge followers are loosely captured in the end sections of the clamping band and lie along a circumferential center line on the band. Driving wedges extend along an axis transverse to the circumferential center line. The wedge followers and wedge drivers both have divergent edge sections that interengage and slide over one another as the driving wedges are pulled together by a clamping mechanism comprising, in a simplest form, a nut and bolt. As the driving wedges move toward the circumferential center line, they displace the wedge followers. The wedge followers engage the end portions of the clamping band and force it and the connector boot into a sealing relationship with the surrounding manhole riser.

A saddle tee assembly for connecting a lateral pipe to a main pipe. The saddle tee assembly includes a saddle tee boot, a collar means and clamping device. The saddle tee boot has a flexible saddle and cylindrical hollow tee section. The saddle attaches to a main pipe; the hollow tee section receives the lateral pipe in a first hollow section. A section hollow section with an internally tapered surface seals against the end of the lateral pipe. A flexible collar overlies the saddle about the periphery of the hollow tee. A clamping device circumscribes the main pipe to apply tension along the circumference of the main pipe to the collar thereby to force the collar into the saddle and the saddle against the main pipe. A water-activated mastic for improved sealing characteristics may be interposed between the saddle and the main pipe.

A band assembly for effecting a seal particularly adapted for use in establishing a joint between a sewer pipe and a reinforced concrete manhole riser. The seal is affected by a tapered elastomeric tubular connector boot and a clamping band member that expands one end of the boot into the surface of the riser wall. The band assembly comprises a clamping band and a separate toggle expander. The clamping band includes separated end sections that capture the ends of the toggle expander. When the toggle expander is forced into an expanded position, the clamping band forces the connector boot into contact with the manhole riser. The clamping band includes stiffening lips and the toggle expander also incudes stiffening lips to provide a rigid structure. In one embodiment a tab overlies the end sections in the space of the clamping band and the space therebetween to further improve the evenness of the sealing force applied to the connector boot.

Band for effecting a seal

An apparatus for sealably and flexibly joining together a pipe member and an enclosed body in a sewer system having a seal comprising an elastic sleeve with an annular cavity. The cavity contains a coagulant material that forms a cellular, viscous gel when activated with water. When the seal is properly positioned, water is pumped under pressure through a valve into the cavity to expand the elastic sleeve into sealing engagement with the pipe and the manhole. In time the water and coagulant material forms the gel that remains in the viscous state.

Apparatus and method for improved pipe to manhole sealing

A low cost apparatus and method for centering a grinding and cutting apparatus on the face of the spigot or a bell of a reinforced or non-reinforced concrete pipe, manhole riser, or the like. It is mechanical to avoid the expense and uncertainty of hydraulic sensing systems. The four contact guides, one in each quadrant, are each mounted at the lower portion of one of four guide arms, each centrally pivoted to the rotatable support of the machine and each having an upper portion above the pivot connected by an elongated link to one of a pair of rotatable pivot plates. Hydraulic pistons and cylinders maintain a yieldable resistance to turning of the pivot plates. As the base plate of the grinding and cutting apparatus approaches the face of the spigot, with the centering guides extended therebelow, the guides contact the top edge of the pipe or spigot and are forced open relative to each other while forcing the base plate into exact centered position, based on the configuration of the exterior face of the spigot.

Mechanical centering apparatus and method

An apparatus and method for accurately grinding the outer circumferential face of the spigot of a bell, and spigot type member, such as a concrete pipe or manhole riser on one side of the spigot, while simultaneously cutting a sealing ring groove in that face on the opposite side of the spigot provides for advancing a support base and rotatable main arm assembly toward the end face of the member while automatically centering the support base on the outer circumferential face, then clamping in the centered position. A motor driven grinding assembly, on one side of the main arm assembly, and a motor driven cutter assembly, on the opposite side thereof, are then moved inwardly into contact with the spigot face, and the main arm assembly rotated in an annular path around the support base and member to grind a true truncated conical face on the spigot while the cutter forms an accurate sealing groove in that face for an O ring, or other seal. The centering is accomplished by opposite slave cylinders and pistons under control of a master cylinder, and the clamping is accomplished by a plurality of cylinder and piston devices.
