The invention relates to phosphites comprising substituted or unsubstituted tricyclodecylmethyl groups. The phosphites may also contain substituted and unsubstituted alcohols having about C6&#x2013;C18 carbon atoms. The alcohol chain may be aliphatic, arylakyl and alkylaryl groups. The method of making of the phosphite composition is also described.

In a second embodiment, the invention discloses a method to make a stabilized composition comprising a benzimidazole based stabilizing compound and a resin, said method comprising mixing said benzimidazole based stabilizing compound with said resin.

The present invention is directed to a process for the preparation of sterically hindered acid esters, e.g., organic phosphites, comprising contacting a sterically hindered hydroxyl-containing compound with an acid halide in the presence of an acid acceptor selected from the group consisting of: 1,5-diazabicyclo&lsqb;4.3.0&rsqb;non-5-ene (DBN), 1,8-diazabicyclo&lsqb;5.4.0&rsqb;undec-7-ene (DBU), 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP), 1,4-diazabicyclo&lsqb;2.2.2&rsqb;octane (DABCO), or mixtures thereof, wherein said an acid acceptor is present in an amount sufficient to drive the reaction to completion.

Process for the preparation of acid esters

Reaction of a phenol with a metal salt of an alcohol produces a metal phenolate salt of a phenol. When a hindered phenol is used a hindered metal phenolate is produced. Such hindered metal phenolate salts are useful in driving the synthesis reaction of hindered phenol esters and phosphite esters to completion.

Stabilized thermoplastic compositions

Melt extrusion processes involving phosphite stabilized polyolefin compositions subject to solid by-product formation during melt extrusion are improved by the addition of a metal salt of a lactic acid to the composition. The processes involving the improved compositions exhibit reduced levels of screen pack plugging during fiber and film extrusion processes than that achieved with fatty acid salts, such as calcium stearate.

Melt extrusion process

A process is provided for making 2,2 bisphenyl phosphites and 2,2 biphenyl phosphites. The process provides pure product without requiring a recrystallization step. The process involves reacting phosphorous trichloride with either (a) an aromatic diphenol selected from the group of bisphenyl and biphenyls or (b) a monohydroxy hydrocarbon compound, to induce a first product, and then reacting the first product with the other of (a) and (b) in the presence of an amount of tri-n-alkylamine sufficient to neutralize the hydrochloric acid produced in the second reaction, and utilizing an aromatic liquid hydrocarbon medium and a minimum amount to facilitate precipitation of the resultant aromatic phosphite.

Aromatic cyclic bisphosphite esters and polymeric compositions thereof

Hydrolytically stabilized phosphite compositions are provided. The compositions contain an organic phosphite ester antioxidant and a hindered piperidinyl light stabilizer. The hindered piperidinyl component is not only a light stabilizer but also functions to hydrolitically stabilize the organic phosphite antioxidant. The compositions are useful as stabilizer additives to polymeric compositions.

The present invention provides an improved process for making diphosphaspiroundecanes and product-by-process, wherein the process comprises reacting a hydroxyl-substituted organic compound, phosphorous trichloride and pentaerythritol to form an organic-substituted diphosphaspiroundecane such that formation of said organic-substituted diphosphaspiroundecane takes place in the presence of a tri-n-alkylamine having n-alkyl moieties such that each n-alkyl moiety has at least three carbon atoms. The present invention is also directed to bis-3,9-(2,6-di-t-alkyl-4-alkylphenoxy)-2,4,8,10-tetroxa-3,9-diphosphaspri o[5.5]undecanes and polymer composition containing an effective amount of same.

Hydrolytically stable phosphite compositions for melt flow and color stabilization of thermoplastics may be prepared from crude tetrahydroabietyl alcohol. The phosphites may be prepared by reacting said alcohol with an organophosphite, such as by transesterification. Other synthesis techniques may also be used.
