An electric utility meter composed of: a chassis assembly (2) having elements (4) for connecting the meter between a source of electrical power and a consumer of the electrical power; a signal generating unit (30) carried by the chassis assembly (2) and electrically coupled to the elements (4) for connecting for providing a signal which is a function of the energy being supplied to the consumer, the signal generating unit including a first electrical connector (34) to which the signal is supplied; a front plate member (16,20) carried by the chassis assembly (2) and bearing legible information (48) identifying the meter; circuitry (100) for deriving information relating to the rate at which energy is being supplied to the consumer; an electrical signal conductor (72) connected to the circuitry (100) and having a second electrical connector (70) coupled to the first electrical connector (34) for supplying the signal to the circuitry (100); and an electrically actuated numeric display device (81) electrically connected to the circuitry (100) for displaying the information derived by the circuitry (100), wherein the circuitry (100), the electrical signal conductor (72), and the display device (81) form a plug-in module which is removably inserted into the chassis assembly (2) behind the plate member so that the legible information is not obscured by the module, and the first and second electrical connectors (34,70) are disposed to become coupled together as a result of insertion of the module into the chassis assembly (2).

A circuit assembly composed of: a one-piece molded support member (8); a first circuit device (32) positioned on the support member (8) and having a row of first contact elements (34) formed to have contact surfaces all lying in a first common plane; a second circuit device (36) having a row of second contact elements (38) formed to have contact surfaces all lying in a second common plane, the second circuit device (36) being secured to, and positioned by, the support member (8) such that the contact surfaces of the second contact elements (38) face the contact surfaces of the first contact elements (34), each first contact element (34) is aligned with a respective second contact element (38), and the first and second common planes are parallel to one another and are spaced a predetermined distance apart; and an elastomeric connector (10) interposed and compressed between the first and second circuit devices (32,36) for conductively connecting each first contact element (34) to the respective second contact element (38 ) with which the first contact element (34) is aligned.

A load survey tape recorder has a tape transport assembly including a supply spindle assembly having a magnetic brake and a take-up spindle assembly having a magnetic clutch. Substantially constant tensions are maintained in a recording tape as it is driven between supply and take-up reels by the magnetic retarding forces of the magnetic brake and by a variable magnetic drive coupling of the magnetic clutch. A non-magnetic spacer is placed in one or both of the magnetic coupling gaps of the brake and clutch for improved operation.

A completely solid state photoelectric pulse initiator for electric utility meter telemetry and recording systems includes a low power CMOS digital integrated circuit (I.C.) flip-flop output circuit for directly generating output pulses in response to the rate of rotation of a meter movement. A pulse rate dividing circuit is provided by a presettable divide-by-N CMOS digital I.C. in one preferred form for electronically varying the ratio of the output pulses relative to the input pulses. A simplified data magnetic recording receiver circuit is capable of being supplied recorder drive current directly from the Q and Q logic outputs of the output flip-flop to produce non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data pulse recording.
