Provided herein are blown films with encapsulated active agents, such as volatile anti-microbial agents, suitable for use as food packaging materials. Also provided herein are methods of manufacturing such blown films. The methods include extruding a bubble from molten polymers, dispensing active agents inside the bubble, and collapsing the bubble such that the bubble self-adheres to form a film with the active agents encapsulated.

Blown film materials and processes for manufacturing thereof and uses thereof

Cast-film process for making a fiber-reinforced film is disclosed. The process includes providing at least a first thermoplastic resin, melting the at least first thermoplastic resin, extruding the at least first thermoplastic resin through a first extension die to form a first thermoplastic film, providing at least a second thermoplastic resin, melting the at least second thermoplastic resin, extruding the at least second thermoplastic resin through a second extension die to form a second thermoplastic film, transporting the first and second thermoplastic films along respective casting rollers, and introducing a plurality of fibers between the first and second thermoplastic films so as to form a fiber-reinforced film having a thickness between about 0.2 mil to about 2.0 mils and having a first thermoplastic layer, a second thermoplastic layer, and a plurality of fibers dispersed therebetween. Cast-film process for making a fiber-reinforced bag is also disclosed.

Fiber-reinforced film processes and films

A blown-film process for making a fiber-reinforced film comprises providing and melting at least one thermoplastic resin. The at least one thermoplastic resin is extruded through an extension die to form a film bubble. A plurality of fibers is introduced inside of the film bubble. The fibers are distributed inside of the film bubble. The film bubble is collapsed after introducing the plurality of fibers so as to form a fiber-reinforced film. The fiber-reinforced film has a first thermoplastic layer, a second thermoplastic layer, and a plurality of fibers dispersed therebetween. The film may be formed in a bag.

The present invention relates to polymer structures such as thermoplastic films having improved aroma barrier properties and methods for making the polymeric structures, which may be in the form of a resealable container. Aroma barrier is improved by incorporating a barrier layer of polymeric material including at least about 10 mole percent of polymerized cyclo-olefin moieties.

Packages with active agents are described. Generally, the disclosed packages have a pair of opposing body panels joined together along a pair of opposing sides and a bottom bridging the sides so as to define a mouth opposite the bottom, a reclosable fastener extending along the mouth, and an active agent. The reclosable fastener includes a pair of polymeric tracks, in which each of the tracks includes a mating element and a fin portion. The mating elements are releasably engageable to each other, and each of the fin portions extends downwards from the respective mating element towards the bottom of the reclosable package. The active agent is associated with at least one of the fin portions for communication with the interior of the reclosable package.

A polymeric film bag having first and second panels that are joined to each other along a pair of opposing sides and a bottom bridging the opposing sides. Each of the first and second panels have an original width. Extending inwardly from near or at one of the pair of opposing sides is a first narrowing seal. The first narrowing seal seals the first and second panels together such that a second width of the first and second panels is created that is smaller than the original widths of the first and second panels.

A method for simultaneously sealing and creating a thermal perforation between two thermoplastic layers that comprises providing two thermoplastic layers. A drum is provided that has at least one sealbar and perforation assembly. The two thermoplastic layers are contacted to the sealbar and perforation assembly. The thermoplastic layers are sealed with two generally opposing parallel seals and simultaneously create a thermal perforation in the thermoplastic layers generally parallel to the opposing seals. The thermal perforation is located between the two opposing seals.

Methods of making thermal seals and perforations

An apparatus and method for heating and cooling a polymer structure employs a tube structure. The tube structure includes a conductive tube and a conductive strip. The tube is composed of a first conductive material having a first electrical resistivity, and the strip is composed of a second conductive material having a second electrical resistivity less than the first resistivity. The strip is connected to only a portion of an outer surface of the tube and extends along a length of the tube. In the method, an impulse of electric current is passed through the tube structure until the strip is heated to a predetermined sealing temperature. The strip and the polymer structure are brought into contact with each other for a dwell time sufficient to generate a heat seal in the polymer structure. A cooling medium is passed through the tube to cool the strip to a predetermined release temperature that facilitates release of the strip from the polymer structure.

Folded thermoplastic bag structure

A method of forming a plurality of easy to open handle bags is provided. The method includes providing a flattened tube of thermoplastic material oriented in a generally longitudinal direction. The flattened tube has a first longitudinal side edge, a second longitudinal side edge, and a transverse heat seal. The tube has first, second, and third sections. The second section is disposed between the first and third sections. The first section is joined to the second section along a generally longitudinal first fold line. The second section is joined to the third section along a generally longitudinal second fold line. A generally rectangular hole is cut through the second section. The generally rectangular hole has a top edge and a bottom edge. The generally rectangular hole is contained transversely between the first and second fold lines. The tube is then Z-folded such that the second section is folded over the third section along the second fold line and the first section is folded over the folded second and third sections along the first fold line. As a result, the first, second, and third sections overlap one another. A line of weakness is formed adjacent the heat seal. The overlapped first, second, and third sections are cut along a first cut line that intersects the line of weakness, extends therefrom past the bottom edge of the generally rectangular hole, and intersects the first fold line. The overlapped first, second, and third sections are also cut along a second cut line that intersects the line of weakness, extends therefrom past the bottom edge of the generally rectangular hole, and intersects the second fold line.
