A mobile terminal reduces its power consumption by selectively switching between a diversity mode and a non-diversity mode. The mobile terminal monitors the total output power of two or more of its transmitters, and selectively switches between the diversity mode and the non-diversity mode based on the total output power. The mobile terminal may also selectively switch between the diversity and non-diversity modes based on a difference in output power levels between the two or more transmitters.

WCDMA power saving with transmit diversity

An image processing system identifies desired views of a particular subject and triggers a mobile camera device in proximity to the subject to capture a digital image, thus collecting new image data to augment an existing database. In an exemplary method, location data for a camera-equipped mobile communication device in visual proximity to a subject of interest is received at an image collection server. Upon determining whether the location data corresponds to a desired view of the subject of interest, the image collection server sends an image capture request to the mobile device, triggering the user of the device to capture an image of the subject. Finally, digital image data is received from the mobile communication device in response to the image capture request. The digital image data may then be used for assembling a composite representation of the subject of interest, such as a 3D model of the subject.

Methods and apparatus for collecting image data

A coordinated signaling scheme for both uplink and downlink transmissions between a base station and a user terminal reduces the amount of time that the user terminal must turn on its receiver to listen for scheduling messages and ACK/NACK signaling. A scheduler at a base station aligns the transmission of downlink scheduling messages (e.g., downlink assignments) with uplink grants and ACK/NACK signaling for uplink transmissions. Aligning the downlink scheduling messages with uplink control signaling enables the user terminal to turn off its receiver for longer periods of time.

Coordinated signaling of scheduling information for uplink and downlink communications

A method in a first device for setting up a peer-to-peer IP connection between the first device and a second device may include sending a request to a second device for setting up the peer-to-peer IP connection between the first device and the second device. The request may include an IP address of the first device. Alternatively, an IP address of the second device may be received in a message from the second device. The peer-to-peer IP connection between the first device and the second device is then set up. The setting up may be initiated by one of the parties associated with the first device or the second device by connecting to the other party using the IP address of the other party.

Methods of delivering electronic content include exchanging communications with a network access point from a control terminal to establish a communication link configured for two-way communications. Electronic content transmitted by the network access point is received at a remote terminal over the established communication link without providing responsive communications to the network access point from the remote terminal.

An event-triggered pairing mechanism allows pairing wireless devices having short range interfaces (e.g., Bluetooth devices) by bumping the wireless devices together. A wireless device being paired with a connecting device detects a bump event; exchanges time information about the bump event with the connecting device; authenticates the connecting device based on the exchanged time information; and allows exchange of user data with the connecting device based on verification of the exchanged time information. Once the devices are paired, user content can be securely exchanged between the devices.

Event triggered pairing of wireless communication devices based on time measurements

The control of an antenna tuner for a portable electronic device includes closed loop tuning when sufficient transmit power is present. The closed loop tuning commences using a predetermined antenna tuner configuration for an operational band and device state. The closed loop tuning may be constrained by a tuning range associated with the predetermined antenna tuner configuration for the operational band and device state. Also, when transmit power is low or when a transceiver is in a receive only state, open loop tuning may be conducted by placing the antenna tuner in the predetermined (or default) configuration for the operational band and phone state.

An electronic device has a display, a controller, and a pair of haptic transducers connected to the display. The controller configures the haptic transducers to momentarily vibrate the display. A pair of sensors disposed on the display detects variations caused by the user touch in the vibrations. Based on an analysis of these variations, the controller can determine the location of the user touch on the touch-sensitive display.

Active acoustic touch location for electronic devices

A base station measures the uplink load on an uplink channel and controls the transmit timing of one or more mobile terminals on the uplink channel based on the measurements of the uplink load. The transmit timing of the mobile terminals may be controlled by sending timing control signals to the mobile terminals over a downlink control channel. In one embodiment, the transmit timing of the uplink channel is slaved to the transmit timing on a downlink channel. In this case, the uplink timing may be controlled by adjusting the downlink transmit timing.

Network control of uplink transmit timing for compressed mode

The wireless receiver of the present invention accommodates dual-carrier Evolved EDGE without significantly impacting existing receiver architectures. The inventive receiver comprises a shared local oscillator and two image-rejecting downconverters. The local oscillator generates a local oscillator frequency between two carrier frequencies of adjacent radio channels. The receiver receives a signal in each of the adjacent radio channels. In a dual-carrier mode, a first image-rejecting downconverter uses the local oscillator frequency to downconvert a first signal received in the first radio channel while rejecting a second signal received in the second radio channel. A second image-rejecting downconverter uses the local oscillator frequency to downconvert the second signal while rejecting the first signal. In a diversity mode, the first and second image-rejecting downconverters use the local oscillator frequency to downconvert the signal received in one of the radio channels while rejecting the signal received in the other radio channel.

Evolved EDGE receiver

Two or more video streams including a high quality video stream and a low quality video stream are simultaneously transmitted to the video receiving device over the wireless network. All of the video streams carry the same video content but with different video quality. The high quality video stream is encoded using an unequal error protection code so that first components (e.g., high frequency components) receive a higher level of error protection than second components (e.g., low frequency components). The video receiving device can select the high quality video stream when channel conditions are favorable. When channel conditions are not good enough to support the high quality video stream, the video receiving device determines whether the first components of the high quality video stream with the greater error protection are usable. If so, the video receiving device combines the first components of the high quality video stream with the low quality video stream. Otherwise, the video receiving device outputs the low quality video stream.

Multimedia stream combining

Methods and apparatus for processing received signals in a multi-carrier system are disclosed. An exemplary method includes estimating one or more first propagation channel coefficients based on a training sequence in each of one or more first slots received over a first radio channel, equalizing signal samples from one or more second slots received over a second radio channel immediately frequency-adjacent to the first radio channel, using the first propagation channel coefficients, and demodulating user data bits from the equalized signal samples. In some embodiments, the training sequence is located at a fixed position in each of the one or more first slots and user data bits are demodulated from a directly corresponding position in each of the second slots. Improved data rates are thus achieved by constraining radio carriers in a multi-carrier system to frequency-adjacent channels and eliminating training symbols from one of the signals.
