The by-pass valve has a selective control already available to control the movement of a piston which is part of the main stream by-pass valve which diverts fluid from the pipe string bore to ports in the outer wall for projection of the fluid stream into a well.

By-pass valve

The diverter valve is carried in a housing that serves as a length of drill string. A selector valve is actuated by selective mud flow control signals from the surface and can close to build internal pressure to move a poppet to open a by-pass channel. Positive resilient seals are carried inside a protective sleeve until the principal openings are closed, then the seal is deployed to stop leakage.

Surface controlled by-pass valve

The apparatus has a housing which is secured to the lower end of a drilling motor body and carries an arbor that is secured to the output shaft of the motor. The arbor has three segments serially connected by gimbals. The upper segment is axially fixed by the bearings of the motor and has a lower end that extends when actuated to push the center segment downward. Axial movement of the center segment actuates a cam to move it laterally. The lower segment extends from the housing as an output shaft. It is arranged to tilt relative to the housing and its upper end is moved laterally by the gimbal connected center segment. The resulting tilt of the rotating axis of the output shaft causes an attached drill head to drill a deflected well bore.

Directional drilling apparatus

The apparatus serves as a length of drill string and has a valve actuatable from the surface that restricts the drilling fluid channel to produce a pressure drop within the apparatus. The pressure drop is used to move a piston which moves a side loading element against a well bore wall to urge the drill string toward the opposite wall to cause a progressing drill head to change direction. The housing that carries the side load element has a clutch that rotationally disengages the housing from the drill string when the element is extended. The drill string can drill as a rotary system while the side loading element is stationary relative to earth.

Drill string deflector sub

The valve, has an orifice and cooperating poppet with the poppet situated to approach the orifice to an extent determined by a controlling crosshead that reciprocates axially in response to manipulation of the mud flow moving through the valve. The amount of restriction provided by the valve is varied by selected manipulation of the drilling fluid flow controls at the surface. Pressure provided to controlled machinery is regulated by a valve by-pass channel. Changes in the standpipe pressure indicates the state of the valve action achieved down hole.

Remote control valve

A fluid powered incremental stepping motor arranged to serve as a length of pipe string has a body that includes an arbor end with an arbor of reduced diameter extending into a bore of a housing end bearingly supported for rotation about the arbor. An annular space between arbor and housing contains a piston rotationally secured to the arbor for limited axial movement. The piston operates within the bore as a power cylinder and carries a flow resistor. Fluid channels extend through the body to accept fluid flow down the pipe string. Fluid flow urges the piston downward and a spring urges it upward. Cams on each end of the piston and mating cams in the housing bore engage at the upward and at the downward extreme of piston travel and at each engagement impart an increment of rotation of the housing relative to the arbor at each excursion of the piston. Increasing fluid flow down the pipe string and then decreasing the flow causes the piston to reciprocate at each flow rate change cycle. The housing then is caused to rotate in steps as long as the flow rate cycling continues.

Directional drilling tool

An improved directional drilling tool permits changing the downhole drilling assembly between straight and directional drilling configuration by manipulation of conventional drilling fluid flow controls at the surface. A housing, with stabilizer features, shrouds a shaft which functions as an extension of the drill string and attaches to a drill head. A drilling fluid flow rate responsive selector valve is situated in the shaft and responds to drilling fluid flow rate manipulations to change assembly configuration. In the straight configuration the shaft remains straight and is rotationally locked to the housing. In the directional configuration the housing is rotationally unlocked from the shaft, normally after directional orientation, so that the shaft can rotate through it. The same action transversely displaces the shaft midsection relative to the housing and the shaft and drill head below is angularly deflected by way of a hinge arrangement near the drill head end of the housing. The process can be reversed for straight drilling by further drilling fluid flow rate manipulations.

A body and driveshaft extension for down hole drilling motors to allow the down hole assembly to operate as part of a drill string responsive to selected manipulations of the drilling fluid flow rate, carried out at the earth surface, to assume either a straight hole drilling configuration or a directional drilling configuration by choice of the driller. In the directional drilling configuration, the drill head driving output shaft rotates about a centerline deflected from the motor general centerline. The point of deflection is between the drilling motor and the drill head.

Drilling motor deviation tool

A hydraulic drill string jar is powered and actuated by drilling fluid pressure controlled from the earth surface. By selective manipulation of drilling fluid flow, the jar can be conditioned to operate in drilling mode to avoid activation of the jars while normal drilling and fluid flow activities take place. By different fluid flow manipulations, the jar is conditioned to operate in the jarring mode. In the jarring mode, the jars will axially shock the drill string each time the flow rate is reduced below a preselected amount and then increased to a higher preselected amount.

Fluid Powered drilling jar

A body, functioning as a length of drill string, has an eccentric roller mounted for rotation around the body. The roller and body have cooperating cam surfaces that cause the roller to reciprocate axially when the body rotates relative to the roller. In use, the extended radius of the eccentric roller engages the near side of the well bore walland tends to become stationary relative to earth. The forced axial motion of the retarded roller induces some peripheral motion at each turn of the drill string. The eccentric roller turns freely with the drill string when the extended radius is adjacent the far side of the well bore wall. The extended radius of the roller tends to spend most of the drilling time between the drill string and the near side, or low side, of the well bore to aid in well bore deviation control.

Drilling deviation control tool

A power tong has two powered rings mounted on the tong frame for independent rotation, one ring, a reel carrier, carries a plurality of spring rewind line storage reels. Independent lines extend from each reel and each line is anchored to the second powered ring. An open gap, or throat, extends to the tong center to receive pipe when the lines are all recovered into the reels. The reel carrier ring is rotated to wrap the lines in a spiral pattern around pipe. The second ring is driven to pull the lines and the reel carrier ring is braked to apply tailing tension to the lines but does then turn in sympathy with the second ring to turn pipe. To recover the lines, the second ring is stopped and the reel carrier ring is driven in the direction to allow lines to return to the reels as they unwrap from the pipe.

Line wrap power tongs

A normally straight drill string component for use just above a downhole drilling motor, or directional jet, that can be caused to be alternately straight or bent by cycling the drilling fluid flow rate between selected flow rate limits by use of controls at the earth surface.

Angle deviation tool

A control system for use on fluid conducting pipe strings in earth boreholes to permit cycling of fluid flow between preselected flow rates to change conditions downhole as a result of surface exercise of fluid flow controls. A resulting change of state downhole is indicated by a change in fluid flow related pressure detectable at the surface.

Remote control selector valve

A column of drill collars have holes or jets extending radially from the collar bore through the collar wall. A wash pipe extends full length through the bore of the perforated collars, so sized as to leave an annular flow space between the wash pipe and the collar bore wall. A remote control selector valve is situated such as to receive drilling fluid from the upwardly continuing drill string and direct the fluid through the wash pipe to the drill bit for regular drilling, or on cue from the earth surface, direct fluid to the annulus to be expelled through the drill collar perforations to help free stuck pipe or to prevent such sticking.

Valved jet device for well drills

An improved directional drilling tool permits the control of the angle of drilling of a drill bit through the repeated placement or removal of a ball within the mudstream. The ball activates, clutch mechanism within the directional drilling tool. The clutch mechanism, controlled by the activated valve, locks the exterior of the directional drilling sub to a fixed angular orientation and activates a deflection cam to deflect a drive shaft so as to angle the bit, causing the bit and sub to drill at a controlled angle offset from the vertical. The unit is aligned and located using wire line measuring equipment of known design. Since the sub may be controllably set in a straight line drilling or an angle drilling position, it may be left permanently in position in a drill string significantly reducing the requirement to trip out the well bore during directional drilling and significantly increasing the flexibility available to the driller to deflect the direction of drilling while drilling is in progress.
