According to one embodiment, a system is described that comprises a network device adapted to receive a media stream including a plurality of network packets. The network device of the system processes the media stream, targeted for a client device communicatively coupled to the network device, by performing a number of operations. A first operation comprises partitioning the plurality of network packets into a plurality of subsets, each subset in the plurality of subsets corresponding to a media frame in a plurality of frames. Next, a priority level is determined for each media frame in the plurality of media frames, where the priority level for each media frame is assigned to each of the one or more network packets in the frame. Thereafter, network packets are transmitted or dropped based at least on the priority level associated with each network packet in the plurality of network packets.

Method and system for prioritizing network packets

A method includes: while streaming video frames on a network toward a client device, detecting a loss of connectivity between the network and the client device; responsive to detecting the loss of the connectivity between the network and the client device, ceasing the streaming of the video frames toward the client device; subsequent to detecting the loss of connectivity, determining that the connectivity between the network and the client device has been re-established; responsive to determining that the connectivity between the network and the client device has been re-established, resuming the streaming of the video frames on the network toward the client device by transmitting an Instantaneous Decoder Refresh (IDR) frame on the network toward the client device without sending one or more frames corresponding to images chronologically prior to an image corresponding to the IDR frame.

Method and system for synchronization of data streams

According to one embodiment, a non-transitory computer readable medium is described that comprises instructions which, when executed by one or more hardware processors, cause dynamic determination of one or more transmission parameters for transmitting a particular network packet of a plurality of network packets. The transmission parameters are determined based on (a) a classification associated with the particular network packet and (b) one or more current conditions. Subsequent to this determination, the particular network packet is transmitted using the one or more transmission parameters.

Dynamic determination of transmission parameters based on packet priority and network conditions

Provided is a method and system for splitting a video stream into X minute video segments and further dividing those video segments into M multiplex files. Each multiplex file can have a Time to Live (TTL). This allows for part of the video to be deleted from disk by just removing a single multiplex file. The remaining multiplex files can be combined to play back the video at a reduced sample rate.

Methods and systems for picture rate reduction of stored video while under continuous record load

A system and method are disclosed for providing a network service. A first criteria specifying a first set of flows from a first service manager is received at a forwarding agent. The first criteria specifies an expiration time interval. The first criteria is stored on the forwarding agent. A second criteria is received that specifies a second set of flows from a second service manager at the forwarding agent. The second set of flows includes flows that are in the first set of flows and the second criteria is designated as a lower priority criteria. The second criteria is stored on the forwarding agent. The first criteria is deleted from the forwarding agent upon the expiration of the expiration time interval. A packet is received that belongs to a flow that is included in the first set and the second set. It is determined that the packet matches the second set ant the packet is forwarded to the second service manager.

Backup service managers for providing reliable network services in a distributed environment

A method of communicating data between a client and a server includes initiating a participating application for transmitting packets between a client and a server. The participating application participates in a transport protocol. The method also includes initiating a non-participating application for transmitting packets between the client and the server. The non-participating application does not participate in the transport protocol. Additionally, the method includes determining whether to transmit a packet from the client to the server using the participating application or the non-participating application.

Method and apparatus for reducing overhead on a proxied connection

A system and method are disclosed for providing a fault tolerant network service. A packet is received that corresponds to a flow from a forwarding agent at a primary service manager and instructions are determined at the primary service manager for handling packets corresponding to the flow. The instructions are sent to the forwarding agent and the instructions are stored at the primary service manager. A replication packet is sent to a backup service manager. The replication packet includes the instructions for handling packets corresponding to the flow.

Stateful failover of service managers

A system and method for determining a chronometrically optimal web site location for access by a client based on proximity measurements on established connections that are a result of requests for actual content. In one embodiment, the technique involves a race condition between local domains each transmitting TCP packets loaded with a HyperText Markup Language (HTML) Base tag identifying that local domain. The earliest received TCP packet is incorporated into the TCP stream. In another embodiment, the technique involves a race condition between local domains each transmitting files having links to streaming media translated to point to its own local domain. The earliest received file is incorporated into the TCP stream while the others are discarded as TCP resends. In yet another embodiment, HTTP redirect operations are performed once for each grouping of links only the earliest redirect packet to reach the client is incorporated into the existing TCP stream.

Method and apparatus for discovering client proximity using race type translations

A system and method are disclosed for transparently proxying a connection to a protected machine. The method includes monitoring a communication packet on a network at a proxy machine. The communication packet has a communication packet source address, source port number, destination address, and destination port number. The proxy determines whether to intercept the communication packet based on whether the communication packet destination address and the communication packet destination port number correspond to a protected destination address and a protected destination port number stored in a proxy list. The proxy machine then determines whether to proxy a proxied connection associated with the communication packet based on the communication packet source address and the communication packet source port number. A protected connection is terminated from the proxy machine to a protected machine. The protected machine corresponds to the communication packet destination address and the communication packet destination port number.

Method and apparatus for transparently proxying a connection

A method of providing a network service is disclosed. The method includes implementing a forwarding agent on a router. The forwarding agent is operative to receive instructions from a service manager. Packets are forwarded from the forwarding agent to the service manager, and the forwarding agent receives instructions from the service manager detailing how to handle the forwarded packets.

Integrating service managers into a routing infrastructure using forwarding agents

A system and method are disclosed for specifying network address translation for a set of packets. A first set of instructions is sent to a forwarding agent specifying criteria for designated packets that are designated to undergo network address translation. A matching packet is received from the forwarding agent that matches the specified criteria. A network address translation scheme is determined for the matching packet. A second set of instructions are sent specifying the network address translation scheme for packets associated with the matching packet.

A system and method are disclosed for transparently proxying a connection to a protected machine. The method includes monitoring a communication packet on a network at a proxy machine. The communication packet has a communication packet source address, a communication packet source port number, a communication packet destination address, and a communication packet destination port number. The proxy determines whether to intercept the communication packet based on whether the communication packet destination address and the communication packet destination port number correspond to a protected destination address and a protected destination port number stored in a proxy list. The proxy then determines whether to proxy a proxied connection associated with the communication packet based on the communication packet source address and the communication packet source port number. A protected connection is terminated from the proxy machine to a protected machine. The protected machine corresponds to the communication packet destination address and the communication packet destination port number. A response is formed to the communication packet under a network protocol by sending a responsive packet from the proxy machine. The responsive packet has a header having a responsive packet source address and a responsive packet source port number such that the responsive packet source address and the responsive packet source port number are the same as to the communication packet destination source address and the communication packet destination port number.

A system and method are disclosed for controlling access to a server. Instructions are sent to a forwarding agent that instruct the forwarding agent to forward packets to a service manager from clients attempting to establish a client connection to the server. A client connection is established with the client. A server connection is established from the service manager to the server and data is transferred from the server connection to the client connection.

Proxying and unproxying a connection using a forwarding agent

A system and method for providing a network service is described. A fragment criteria is sent from a service manager to a forwarding agent that instructs the forwarding agent how to determine whether a received packet fragment at the forwarding agent matches the fragment criteria. A matching packet fragment is received from the forwarding agent at the fragment service manager. The fragment is assembled into a packet at the fragment service manager and in the event that the fragment completes the packet, a flow identifier specifying a flow is determined from the completed packet and completed packet is sent to a service manager that handles the flow specified in the flow identifier.

Handling packet fragments in a distributed network service environment

A system and method are disclosed for providing a plurality of network services. The method includes receiving at a forwarding agent a plurality of matching instructions corresponding to a specified flow from one or more service managers and storing the plurality of matching instructions on the forwarding agent having a forwarding agent network interface. A packet for the specified flow at the forwarding agent is received on the forwarding agent network interface. A highest service priority matching instruction stored on the forwarding agent is determined. The packet is processed according to the highest priority matching instruction. A next highest service priority matching instruction stored on the forwarding agent is determined and the packet is processed according to the next highest service priority matching instruction.
