Methods of selectively forming substituted pyrazines are provided. Methods of the present invention can include receiving a reaction solution including at least one carbon source and at least one nitrogen source, and heating the reaction solution to a reaction temperature and holding the reaction solution at the reaction temperature for a time sufficient to produce a reaction product comprising at least one substituted pyrazine. The carbon source can be selected from the group consisting of hydroxy ketone(s), sugar(s) treated with at least one buffer, and combinations thereof. Tobacco products incorporating substituted pyrazines are also provided.

Methods of selectively forming substituted pyrazines

The invention provides a tobacco composition for use in a smoking article or a smokeless tobacco composition that includes an additive derived from a flower of thespecies. The additive can be a flower isolate derived from a flower of thespecies. In certain embodiments, the flower isolate is in the form of an extract from a flower of thespecies or in the form of a chemically transformed flower isolate, the chemical transformation being selected from acid/base reaction, hydrolysis, thermal treatment, and enzymatic treatment, the chemical transformation releasing at least a portion of a glycosidically bound compound in the flower of thespecies. The invention also provides smoking articles and smokeless tobacco compositions that include the flower additives described herein, and methods for preparing an additive derived from a flower of thespecies for addition to a tobacco composition.

Tobacco-derived components and materials

Methods of forming pyrazines from reactants derived from a plant of thespecies, including receiving an aqueous reactant solution including at least one tobacco-derived cellulosic sugar and at least one tobacco-derived amino acid, heating the reactant solution to a reactant temperature and holding the reactant solution at the reactant temperature for a reactant time to produce a reactant product including at least one tobacco-derived pyrazine, and isolating the at least one tobacco-derived pyrazine from the reactant product. Tobacco products incorporating the tobacco-derived pyrazines are also provided.

Tobacco-derived casing composition

A tobacco composition for use in a smoking article or a smokeless tobacco composition is provided, the composition including a component derived from a seed of thespecies. The component can be a seed of thespecies or a portion thereof in particulate form or in the form of seed isolate derived from a seed of thespecies. In certain embodiments, the seed isolate is in the form of a chemically transformed seed isolate, the chemical transformation being selected from hydrogenation, acid/base reaction, hydrolysis, thermal treatment, and enzymatic treatment. The invention also provides smoking articles and smokeless tobacco compositions that include the seed components described herein, and methods for preparing a component derived from a seed of thespecies for addition to a tobacco composition.

Tobacco seed-derived components and materials

The invention provides a tobacco composition for use in a smoking article or a smokeless tobacco composition that includes an additive derived from a flower of thespecies. The additive can be a flower of thespecies or a portion thereof in particulate form or in the form of flower isolate derived from a flower of thespecies. In certain embodiments, the flower isolate is in the form of an extract from a flower of thespecies or in the form of a chemically transformed flower isolate, the chemical transformation being selected from acid/base reaction, hydrolysis, thermal treatment, and enzymatic treatment. The invention provides a polymer prepared from a substituted 1,3-butadiene (such as neophytadiene) derived from a plant of thespecies. The invention also provides smoking articles and smokeless tobacco compositions that include the polymers described herein. Further, the invention provides a method of polymerizing a substituted 1,3-butadiene derived from a plant of thespecies, the method including reacting a substituted 1,3-butadiene derived from a plant of thespecies with one or more reagents selected from the group consisting of an anionic initiator, a radical initiator, and a Ziegler-Natta catalyst.

Polymeric materials derived from tobacco

A method for chemically modifying a tobacco material during a curing process involves treating the tobacco material in a curing enclosure at a temperature and for a time sufficient to produce cured tobacco. The method also involves contacting the tobacco material with a chemical reagent before and/or during the time period that the tobacco material is cured so that the chemical reagent can interact with the tobacco material, thus resulting in further change in the chemical nature of the cured tobacco material. An exemplary chemical reagent is an ammonia source, which can be applied to a tobacco material in a variety of ways, including by spraying an aqueous ammonia source onto the tobacco or by introducing gaseous ammonia into the curing enclosure during the curing process.

Method for chemically modifying tobacco during curing

The flavor and aroma characteristics of the smoke of a tobacco blend incorporating Oriental tobacco are improved by subjecting that blend to heat treatment. Oriental tobacco having a relatively high sucrose ester content is combined with a second dissimilar Oriental tobacco material and/or a non-Oriental tobacco material to form a tobacco mixture, and that mixture is heated for a time and under conditions sufficient to reduce the concentration of sucrose esters in the Oriental tobacco. Tobacco blends having reduced levels of sucrose esters yield smoke that does not possess undesirable off-notes provided by pyrolysis products of those sucrose esters; namely, 2-methylpropionic acid, 3-methylbutyric acid and 3-methylpentanoic acid.

Method of reducing the sucrose ester concentration of a tobacco mixture

A method for improving the flavor and aroma characters of a smoking article is provided. A mixture consisting essentially of a reducing sugar and optionally a hydroxide of an alkali metal is subjected to heat treatment for a time and under conditions sufficient to produce a flavorful composition. The flavorful composition is then applied to tobacco leaves or cut filler made thereof, and smoking articles are prepared from the tobacco leaves or cut filler.

Method of improving flavor in smoking article

Processes for producing flavorful and aromatic compounds from tobacco material are provided. The processes involve providing a tobacco suspension comprising finely ground tobacco material, and subjecting the tobacco suspension to heat treatment in an enclosed, pressure controlled, and generally inert environment at a temperature of at least 140&deg; C.

Method of providing flavorful and aromatic tobacco suspension

Processes for producing flavorful and aromatic compounds from flue-cured tobacco material are provided. The processes involve providing a tobacco suspension comprising finely ground flue-cured tobacco material in intimate contact with ammonia, and subjecting the tobacco suspension to heat treatment for a time and under conditions sufficient to generate a flavorful and aromatic composition. The composition can be applied to smoking articles such as cigarettes to improve the flavor and aroma character thereof.
