A power circuit for controlling power to a heating element includes an electric resistive element and a thermal switch assembly in series. The thermal switch assembly includes a first contact connected to the electric resistive element, a second contact, and a bimetal element configured to electrically connect and disconnect the first and second contacts. The bimetal element establishing an electrical connection between the first and second contacts when a temperature of the bimetal element is below a predetermined cut-off temperature, and no longer electrically connecting the first and second contacts when the bimetal element is at or above the predetermined cut-off temperature. A first voltage is applied to the electric resistive element when the bimetal element electrically connects the first and second contacts and a second voltage, lower than the first voltage, is applied to the electric resistive element when the bimetal element electrically disconnects the first and second contacts.

Method and apparatus for preventing cooktop fires

A gas burner for an appliance includes a base and a cover. The base includes a wall peripherally formed about the base. The wall includes a plurality of slits extending through the wall and downwardly from a top of the wall. A cover is configured to be placed on the base and form a chamber in fluid communication with a gas conduit. The cover is configured to bound the slits to define a plurality of ports for releasing combustible gas exteriorly of the gas burner. The ports include an entry section near the inner surface and an exit section near the outer surface. Each of the slits includes a floor that is curved upwards from the entry section to the exit section.

A gas burner cap for a cooking appliance includes a top side and a bottom side. The bottom side of the cap is configured to face a corresponding burner body. One or more flame-stabilization chambers are located on the bottom side of the cap.

A burner assembly for a gas powered cooking appliance is provided. The burner assembly may include a burner body including a central region and a plurality of radiating extensions extending radially outward from the central region. The burner assembly may include a burner cap with a central region and a plurality of radiating extensions extending radially outward from the central region. The burner cap is positioned on top of the burner body when the burner is assembled. The burner cap may include at least one overhang positioned on the outer perimeter of the central region and between an adjacent pair of radiating extensions. The at least one overhang forms a gap between the exterior wall of the burner body and the interior wall of the overhang. This gap, or flame stabilization chamber, provides for collection of gases and flame that aid in maintaining the flame during low temperature operation.

A multiple gas burner assembly has two burners spaced apart by a bridge burner. An axis extending through the first and third burner intersects the perimeter of the bridging second burner. The second burner provides a means for providing a substantially continuous flame perimeter and continuous heating intermediate the first burner and third burner when the three burners are lit.
