A high performance louvered fin for a heat exchanger is disclosed, wherein adjacent entrance louvers have increased widths and adjacent exit louvers have decreased widths in order to optimize thermal efficiency.

Higher heat-exchange capacity and greater vapor-liquid throughflows are attained in a downflow condenser. The increased capacity is achieved by a new design in the manifold to encourage condensation and lessen entrainment of gas phase matter in subcooling flows of condensed liquid. The increased capacity is also achieved by tailoring the flowpaths for a two-phase mixture to avoid reduce liquid film buildup on tubewalls.

Downflow condenser

A condenser includes a plurality of generally U-shaped fluid carrying tubes having free ends and a manifold matingly engaging the free ends of the tubes and having an interior chamber. The manifold includes a receiver dryer disposed in the interior chamber and having a first fluid conduit wall and a second conduit wall extending axially to form a generally parallel first fluid passageway and second fluid passageway in fluid communication with the tubes and a dryer capsule being disposed in the interior chamber to dry fluid in the manifold.

There is disclosed a tube-to-header joint arrangement for a heat exchanger wherein the tubes include an oblong or flattened body which is off-set to one side with respect to cylindrical ends formed on the tubes. The off-set bodies facilitate staggering alternate rows of collared openings formed in the header to thereby maintain a predetermined minimum distance between adjacent collars to avoid fatigue or failure of the header, while permitting maximum diameter openings to be employed for maximum surface area contact between each tube and header collar for a stronger joint therebetween.

Heat exchanger

The drawings and description disclose a heat exchanger including two half circle shells, each having corrugated walls, with the half circle shells being welded together at their mating edges to form a full round shell. Prior to the welding operation, a perforated header is mounted in the half shells in the first corrugation adjacent each end thereof, and a plurality of perforated baffles are mounted within the half shells intermediate the headers in corrugations at alternate equally spaced intervals therein. The perforations in the headers and baffles are formed to be aligned, and a tube is mounted through each series of aligned openings to form a tube bundle within the half shells. The two half shells are welded together at their mating edges to form the full round shell, and the headers are brazed to the shell and the tube end portions brazed to the headers. Coolant inlet and outlet end caps are secured to the ends of the shell, and oil or other fluid inlet and outlet connectors are secured to the sides of the shell adjacent the respective ends thereof. Hence oil or other fluid is caused to flow around the tubes and the baffles to be cooled by coolant passing through the tubes.

Heat exchanger and method of assembly thereof

There is disclosed herein a radiator wherein grooves formed in a tank flange and in a header match each other and a mound formed on an associated clamping strip. Tapered edges formed on locking tabs cut in the tank flange cooperate with a sloped surface on the clamping strip when bent inwardly to urge the clamping strip and header toward the tank flange so as to compress a sealing gasket between the header and tank flange grooves, eliminating the need for solder.

There is illustrated and described herein a heat exchanger including rows of tubes, a pair of headers secured to the ends of the tubes, a groove formed in each of the headers adjacent the peripheral wall thereof and intermediate adjacent rows of tubes, a recessed portion formed along the full length of the centerline of each groove, a pair of tanks having walls aligned with and mounted in the grooves of the respective headers, a ledge formed around the outside wall of each header, a chamfer formed along each of the inner and outer edges of the tank walls to form a blunt edge at the ends of the chamfers, and a gasket mounted in each groove and depressed along its centerline into said recessed portions by the blunt edge, the tanks being retained in position by bending spaced extensions of the peripheral wall of each header onto the ledge.

The drawings and description disclose a radiator having top and bottom tanks with their respective headers, and a core assembly therebetween. The latter includes a group of fins and tubes, wherein each tube has a flattened, oblong body section, cylindrical end sections for connection with the respective headers, and transition sections between the flattened body and the cylindrical ends. Reinforcement means is provided for preventing collapsing or pinching at the ends of the flattened body section due to stressing of the tube or flexing of the headers. The reinforcement means is in the form of various shaped pairs of outwardly extending reinforcement ribs formed on opposite sides of the transition section, or inwardly extending dimples formed on opposite sides of the flattened body section adjacent the transition section.

The radiator illustrated includes a core assembly with a headsheet, gasket and tank bolted on the top and bottom ends thereof, as well as side channels for the opposite sides thereof. A 'horseshoe' shaped bracket is secured to the headsheet and tank at each corner of the radiator. Each pair of upper and lower brackets is adapted to having one of the side channels removably mounted thereon and is further adapted to permitting repair of any corner leaks without having to break the tank-to-headsheet sealed joint to remove the side channel therefrom.

A solderless crimped joint and method for forming same for a heat exchanger (10) of the type having a heat transfer core (12) including a plurality of fins (14) in parallel stacked relationship for defining heat transfer surfaces and a plurality of fluid-carrying tubes (16, 18) extending transversely through the fins (14) for defining a fluid circuit. The fluid circuit includes at least one solderless tube-to-tube joint wherein a first tube (18) includes an end having an annular outwardly extending shoulder (20) followed by an inwardly tapered open frustroconical portion (22). A second tube (16) forming the joint includes an end having an outwardly flared portion (24) in mating engagement with the frustroconical portion (22) and an inwardly extending flange (26) crimped over the shoulder (20) for forcing the tapered portion (22) into the flared portion (24). The assembly is characterized by including a plurality of raised portions (28) or gullets extending from the shoulder (20) in the direction away from the tapered frustroconical portion (22) and extending outwardly of the first tube (18) whereby the flared portion (24) is crimped into engagement about the raised portions (28) and the first tube (18) without any substantial gathering of material in the crimped flared portion (26).

A heat exchanger assembly and the method of making same wherein the heat exchanger assembly includes a heat exchanging core having spaced headsheets adjacent opposite extremities with fluid conveying tubes extending between the headsheets and having heat transfer fins disposed upon the tubes. Two plastic radiator components are disposed in mating engagement with one another with each component encasing one-half of the core and disposed in mating engagement with one another and defining spaced open cavities. Each of the components is in fluid-tight or sealed relationship with one another and with each of the headsheets disposed within the opening of each of the cavities so that the cavities and the headsheets define a pair of spaced tanks whereby fluid may flow between the tanks through the heat exchanging core. The headsheets are disposed in grooves within the components with a seal engaging the periphery of the headsheets and disposed in the grooves for sealing the headsheets to the respective components. The components include flanges extending peripherally thereabout with connecting means securing the flanges together to maintain the components in sealed relationship with one another. One of the components defines a rectangular opening for allowing air to flow therethrough while the other component defines a circular opening with a fan shroud and also includes inlet and outlet spouts associated with the respective tanks as well as a filler tube, all of which are integrally formed with the component. Each of the components include mounting portions extending outwardly from the flanges for mounting the assembly to a support structure.

Heat exchanger assembly

A heat exchanger assembly of the type having a heat transfer core element which includes a plurality of fins in parallel stacked relationship for defining heat transfer surfaces and a plurality of fluid carrying tubes extending transversely through the fins for defining a fluid circuit, the assembly including at least one tube-to-tube joint, the improvement comprising a solderless connection at the tube-to-tube joint wherein one of the tubes includes an end having an annular, outwardly extending shoulder followed by an inwardly tapered flared portion for receiving the outwardly tapered portion of the other portion and the other of the tubes including an end having an outwardly flared portion for receiving the outwardly tapered portion of the other tube end and an inwardly directed flange clinched over the shoulder of the other tube end to produce a solderless mechanical connection between the two tubes.

Method of making a heat exchanger

A radiator tank headsheet including an integral ferrule around an elongated tube-receiving opening and method for forming the same wherein the method includes the steps of forming an elongated depression in the sheet material having generally parallel sidewalls, endwalls joining the sidewalls, and a bottomwall, forming a pair of holes in the depression by removing a slug of sheet material from the bottomwall adjacent each of the endwalls, splitting the bottomwall generally along its centerline between the holes to form two bottomwall segments, and forcing the two segments outwardly and into coplanar relationship with the sidewalls of the depression to form an elongated opening including an integral ferrule having generally parallel, relatively high sidewalls and endwalls of lesser height joining the sidewalls.
