A method for identifying damage in a component of a wind turbine includes placing a conductive element onto at least one surface of the component of the wind turbine. The method also includes electrically connecting the conductive element into an electrical circuit. Further, the method includes monitoring a status of the electrical circuit to identify the damage in the component. In particular, when the status of the electrical circuit is open, damage is likely present in the component, and when the status of the electrical circuit is closed, damage is unlikely present in the component. Moreover, the method includes transmitting the status of the electrical circuit to a user interface for display.

Systems and methods for identifying cracks in wind turbine components

A pitch bearing for coupling a rotor blade to a hub of a wind turbine includes an outer race configured to be coupled to the hub, an inner race rotatable relative to the outer race and configured to be coupled to the rotor blade, and a first plurality of line contact rolling elements. The outer race defines a first outer raceway wall and the inner race defines a first inner raceway wall. The first plurality of line contact rolling elements is disposed between the first inner and outer raceway walls. Each of the plurality of line contact rolling elements defines a predetermined contact angle. The predetermined contact angle is defined as an angle between a reference line extending perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of one of the plurality of line contact rolling elements and a reference line extending parallel to a horizontal plane of the pitch bearing. Further, the predetermined contact angle includes angles between 0 degrees (&#xb0;) and 90&#xb0;.

A bearing assembly for a wind turbine includes a bearing comprising an outer race, an inner race rotatable relative to the outer race, and a plurality of roller elements positioned within at least one raceway defined between the outer and inner races. Further, at least one of the outer race or the inner race defines a radial opening. The bearing assembly also includes at least one ball plug positioned within the radial opening of at least one of the outer race or the inner race. The ball plug(s) is removable such that the plurality of roller elements can be inserted between the outer and inner races. Moreover, at least a portion of the ball plug(s) has a tapered cross-section.

The present disclosure is directed to a tip extension assembly for a rotor blade of a wind turbine. The tip extension assembly includes a tip extension having a body with a pressure side surface and a suction side surface. Further, the tip extension is slidable onto a tip of the rotor blade so as to overlap the rotor blade adjacent the tip. In addition, the tip extension defines an extended trailing edge of the rotor blade. Moreover, an edge of the tip extension defines a step profile at a transition region between the tip extension and a trailing edge of the rotor blade. The tip extension assembly also includes at least one chord extension configured for attachment adjacent to the edge of the tip extension so as to minimize the step profile and associated noise caused thereby.

Methods of manufacturing rotor blade components for a wind turbine and rotor blade components produced in accordance with such methods are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method generally includes heating first and second sheets of thermoplastic material to a forming temperature; placing the first sheet of thermoplastic material within a first half of a thermoforming mold and the second sheet of thermoplastic material in an opposite, second half of the thermoforming mold; forming the first sheet of thermoplastic material to the first half of the thermoforming mold; forming the second sheet of thermoplastic material to the second half of the thermoforming mold; compressing the first and second halves of the thermoforming mold so as to join at least a portion of the first and second sheets together; and, releasing the joined first and second sheets of thermoplastic material from the thermoforming mold so as to form the rotor blade component.

Rotor blade components for a wind turbine and methods of manufacturing same

A method for installing an add-on component onto a tip of a wind turbine blade, the associated blade, and the component, are provided. The add-on component has a span-wise end and a separated trailing edge, and is slidable onto the blade tip. Strips of a double-sided adhesive tape are attached onto either or both pressure and suction side surfaces of the blade adjacent the blade tip, or onto interior surfaces of the add-on component, the tape strips having a release liner on an opposite exposed side thereof. An extension tail is configured with the release liner that extends beyond the span-wise end of the add-on component when the add-on component is placed and held at a desired position on the blade. The add-on component is slid onto and maintained in position on the blade tip and, starting from the tape strip furthest from the separated trailing edge, extension tails of the respective tape strips are sequentially peeled through the separated trailing edge and away from the add-on component.

Attachment method and system to install components, such as tip extensions and winglets, to a wind turbine blade

A method for installing an add-on component to a surface of a wind turbine blade includes attaching an adhesive side of strips of a double-sided adhesive tape onto either the surface of the wind turbine blade or a surface of the add-on component, the tape strips having a release liner on an opposite exposed side thereof. The tape strips having an extension tail of the release liner that extends beyond an edge of the add-on component when the add-on component is placed and held at a desired position against the surface of the wind turbine blade. With the add-on component held at the desired position, the extension tail is pulled away at an angle such that that release liner is removed along the length of the tape strip while maintaining the add-on component against the blade surface to attach the exposed adhesive under the release liner to either the surface of the wind turbine blade or the surface of the add-on component.

Attachment method and system to install components, such as vortex generators, to a wind turbine blade

A method is provided for installing an add-on component to a surface of a wind turbine blade, as well as the blade with attached add-on component, and the add-on component as a stand-alone device. A slot is defined in one or both of the pressure side or suction side surfaces of the add-on component. The adhesive side of strips of a double-sided adhesive tape are attached onto either the surface of the wind turbine blade or an interior surface of the add-on component, the tape strips having a release liner on an opposite exposed side thereof. The tape strips are arranged longitudinally along one or both sides of the slot, and each strip has an extension tail that extends beyond an edge of the add-on component when component is held at a desired position against the surface of the wind turbine blade. The extension tails are pulled along the slot at an angle such that that release liner is removed through the slot along the length of the tape strip while maintaining the desired position of the add-on component against the surface of the wind turbine blade.

The present disclosure is directed to a rotor blade assembly for a wind turbine that controls pitch bearing load distribution. The assembly includes a rotor blade having a body shell extending between a blade root and tip, a pitch bearing at an interface between the blade root and a hub of the wind turbine, and plurality of blade bolts coupling the blade root to the hub through the pitch bearing. The pitch bearing includes an outer bearing race and an inner bearing race rotatable relative to the outer race. Thus, in one embodiment, the blade bolts couple the blade root to the hub through the inner race of the pitch bearing. Further, each of the blade bolts has a first end and a second end defining a length therebetween and at least two of the blade bolts have varying lengths so as to distribute loads experienced by the pitch bearing.

Rotor blade assembly for a wind turbine having variable-length blade bolts

Methods of manufacturing rotor blade components for a wind turbine and rotor blade components produced in accordance with such methods are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method generally includes providing a mold of the rotor blade component; coating at least a portion of an interior surface of the mold with an elastomeric material; inserting impletion material within the mold so as to at least partially reduce an open internal volume within the mold; inserting a foam material within the mold; and, removing the rotor blade component from the mold, wherein the elastomeric material forms a cover skin around at least a portion of the rotor blade component. In an alternative embodiment, the method includes providing at least one support member defining a profile for the rotor blade component on a mold surface; coating at least a portion of the support member with an elastomeric material; and, allowing the elastomeric material to cure on the mold surface so as to form the rotor blade component.

Methods of manufacturing rotor blade components for a wind turbine and rotor blade components produced in accordance with such methods are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method generally includes providing a mold of the rotor blade component; coating at least a portion of an interior surface of the mold with an elastomeric material; inserting a foam material within the mold; and, removing the rotor blade component from the mold, wherein the elastomeric material forms a cover skin around at least a portion of the rotor blade component. In an alternative embodiment, the method includes providing at least one support member defining a profile for the rotor blade component on a mold surface; coating at least a portion of the support member with an elastomeric material; and, allowing the elastomeric material to cure on the mold surface so as to form the rotor blade component.
