A special purpose machine measures and modulates communication signals that are parsed into frames. Frames of signals modulated and measured to have certain qualities are deemed to be the result of wind noise. Frames of wind noise are cancelled from further use within a communication system.

Wind noise classifier

A noisy signal is picked up by a microphone, digitized by an Analog to Digital Converter and fed to a processor for analysis and wind noise reduction. Most of noise reduction methods are based on the assumption that the interfering noise is stationary or slowly varying compared with speech. This assumption allows 'learning' the characteristics of the noise between speech pauses and, based on a noise estimate, to build different filters that reduce the noise. In the case of wind noise this basic assumption is not valid. Wind noise is highly non-stationary, its power and spectral characteristics vary greatly. Because wind noise is not stationary, regular noise reduction methods cannot be used to reduce wind noise. For reducing wind noise effects in a device, the presence of wind should be detected reliably and then a novel approach presented here must be applied to eliminate the wind noise.

Method for wind noise reduction

The present invention relates to means and methods of classifying speech and music signals in voice communication systems, devices, telephones, and methods, and more specifically, to systems, devices, and methods that automate control when either speech or music is detected over communication links. The present invention provides a novel system and method for monitoring the audio signal, analyze selected audio signal components, compare the results of analysis with a pre-determined threshold value, and classify the audio signal either as speech or music.

A clear, high quality voice signal with a high signal-to-noise ratio is achieved by use of an adaptive noise reduction scheme with two microphones in close proximity. The method includes the use of two omini directional microphones in a highly directional mode, and then applying an adaptive noise cancellation algorithm to reduce the noise.

Dual adaptive structure for speech enhancement

Various embodiments of the present invention enable a system and method for reducing or entirely canceling background or environmental noise from a voice transmission from a communications device. A communications device, such as a mobile telephone, is configured with an environmental noise compensation, correction, or counterbalanced (correction) signal generator that is connected between at least one microphone and a continuous time quadrant multiplication. Optional discrete time or digital signal processing may be applied. The original output of the at least one microphone and a compensation, correction, or counterbalanced or counter-balancing signal generated by the environmental noise compensation, correction, or counterbalanced signal generator are mixed or otherwise combined together after being received by the antenna to the receiver.

Environmental noise reduction and cancellation for a communication device including for a wireless and cellular telephone

A method for sewing a plurality of gore-shaped metalized mesh fabric panels to each other to form a parabolic dish-shaped reflector surface for subsequent attachment to the radially extendable rib members of a deployable parabolic reflector. The method includes using a template having 'cut' and 'sew' lines indicated thereon for cutting out a desired number of gore-shaped panels from a bolt of metalized mesh fabric and sewing the panels together along adjacent side edges thereof to form the dish-shaped reflector surface. The dish-shaped reflector surface is then attached to the reflector by sewing the mesh fabric panels to stitch holes provided in each rib member. The reflector surface is accurized by using a wedge-shaped tool which is placed on a slack reflector panel adjacent a gore seam. A cord is then laced thereover along its length, after which the tool is removed, and the two ends of the cord are pulled tight thereby forming a tuck seam in the reflector panel which takes up slack in the reflector surface. A novel metalized mesh fabric construction is also disclosed and includes silver coated nylon strands and denier dacron strands interwoven in a 'Marquisette' or 'Leno' style weave. The weave has openings sized sufficiently large to minimizing the effects of wind load yet sufficiently small to provide good reflective performance of radio frequencies up to and including X-Band frequencies.
