A retention component for retaining a coil in a slot of a stator for a generator having a rotor includes a first segment and a second segment, both of which are configured to be inserted into the slot. At least one of the first and second segments is made entirely of laminated sheets that together form a unitary structure of magnetic material. At least one of the first and second segments has an interfacing surface configured to directly interface a rotor surface in the absence of a structure therebetween. A channel is between the first and second segments, and a third segment that extends along and within the channel. The third segment is less magnetic or non-magnetic than at least one of the first and second elements.

Method and apparatus to reduce losses in a compact high speed generator

A generator assembly may include a bearing liner and a bearing retainer configured to reduce vibration response in a bearing assembly under high frequency operation of a rotor. The bearing liner may be configured to provide a clearance between the bearing assembly and an adjacent housing/bearing liner to prevent high vibration output from the bearing assembly on for example, the rotor shaft. The bearing retainer may include a recess to accommodate axial movement of the bearing assembly in response to rotation of the rotor. In some embodiments, the bearing retainer may include a dampener to dampen contact of the bearing assembly with the retainer.

Generator assembly for high axial vibration input

A wedge cooling apparatus and method for cooling a rotating machine, such as a generator, disperses a spray of cooling fluid into the wedges of the generator. The spray cooling method results in a high heat transfer coefficient of about 2000-3000 W/mC as opposed to conventional conduction cooling, which has a heat transfer coefficient of about 200-300 W/mC. The apparatus and method of the present invention efficiently removes heat from high powered, high current density designed generators.

Enhanced spray cooling technique for wedge cooling

A wedge cooling apparatus and method for cooling a rotating machine, such as a generator, disperses a spray of cooling fluid into the wedges of the generator via a pipe that runs along the length of each of the wedges. The pipe may include a plurality of spray delivery devices to spray cooling fluid from the pipe to the inside of the wedges. The spray cooling method results in a high heat transfer coefficient of about 2000-3000 W/mC as opposed to conventional conduction cooling, which has a heat transfer coefficient of about 200-300 W/mC. The apparatus and method of the present invention efficiently removes heat from high powered, high current density designed generators.

An electrical power system may comprise a power source, an electrical load and an interconnection path between the power source and the electrical load. At least one power-source current transformer may be positioned at the power source. At least one remote current transformer may be positioned remotely from the power-source current transformer so that a portion of the interconnection path is between the power-source and the remote current transformer. A control circuit may be interposed between the power-source and remote current transformers and may be responsive to current imbalance between the power-source and remote current transformers to disconnect the power source from the electrical load in the event of such imbalance. The at least one power-source current transformer may comprise a secondary winding having first and second ends, and a resistor connected across the first and second ends. This resistor may provide a path for current transformer secondary current to flow in the event of an open circuit failure in the control circuit or the interconnection path between the current transformer and the control circuit. Consequently voltage across the current transformer secondary may be limited to a level that will not damage the secondary windings. The control circuit may detect the open circuit failure and act to isolate the power source from the load with the minimum of time delay. The current transformer is thereby protected from open circuit failures.

Apparatus for preventing incorrect installation of machinery components together includes a tab, pin and pin-receiving hole. The tab on the seal plate protrudes angularly from its periphery and laterally beyond it so as to prevent incorrect installation of two seal plates together in a faulty sealing relationship with machinery components by their tabs making interfering contact with one another producing a visible gap between the two seal plates. The pin is mounted on and protrudes axially from a surface of one machinery component facing the seal plate and prevents incorrect installation of the machinery components together in a faulty sealing relationship without the seal plate between them by the pin contacting the surface of the other machinery component and producing a gap between the machinery components. The hole extends through the seal plate to receive the pin within it when one seal plate is correctly installed between the machinery components.

Apparatus for preventing incorrect installation of machinery components together

A shear gear arrangement with gear teeth on the bearing liner positioned to engage complementary teeth on a shear gear main body. The bearing liner is static, while the shear gear main body mounts on the rotating drive shaft. If a failure occurs, the drive shaft displacement causes the shear gear main body gear teeth to engage the bearing liner teeth, instantaneously loading the shear section of the shaft with a sufficient torque load to shear the section as designed.

A disengagement/disconnect assembly for disengaging a generator from a gear box includes an inner ball screw having an angled threading on an outer surface thereof and surrounding and operatively engaged to a rotating generator drive shaft to cause rotation of the inner ball screw, the inner ball screw having axial dog teeth engaged to corresponding teeth of the gear box drive shaft, an outer ball screw surrounding and normally rotating with the inner ball screw and having a spherical ball and an angled ball track between the inner and outer ball screws, a lock, and a brake for slowing or stopping rotation of the outer ball screw so that the inner ball screw rotates relative to the outer ball screw along the ball track and slides axially toward the lock thereby disengaging the generator from the gear box drive shaft.

Ball screw resettable mechanical disconnect

A high frequency starter-generator system uses an electric machine design that does not employ rotating rectifiers installed on the rotor. The output frequency of such a starter-generator is increased by about 200% as compared with a conventional starter-generator with the same number of poles operating in the same speed range. This design allows significant weight and volume reductions of the electric machine while its reliability is increased. The present invention may find application in any starter-generator application, including more electric architecture-type aircraft designs currently in development.

An annular bus ring assembly for connecting main rotor windings of a generator to the exciter diodes includes a plurality of annular bus rings with tabs bent over forming plurality of pads mounted on either side of a dielectric hub. The pads of annular bus rings clocked at an angle to each other to generate a pattern of plurality of pads on a equal angle spacing on a diameter to connect to the diodes by wire rope leads and a pattern of two connection at 90&#xb0; spacing to connect to main generator leads.

Connection method for rotating rectifiers on a generator

When driven by a variable speed prime mover, a generator system provides relatively constant frequency AC power by independently controlling the main rotor flux rotational speed. The generator system includes an exciter stator that induces current in the exciter rotor windings at a desired frequency and phasing. The exciter rotor windings are electrically connected to and located in a common core as the main rotor windings to provide two-phase excitation current to the main rotor windings. The exciter stator winding is also located in a common core as the main generator stator windings. Excitation is supplied to the exciter stator from an exciter controller, which controls the frequency and phasing of the exciter excitation, based on the rotational speed and rotor position of the generator, to maintain a constant output frequency. The exciter frequency control function of the exciter controller may be eliminated when the generator system is driven by a constant speed prime mover or when a narrow band variable frequency output is required.

A stub shaft of a main rotor shaft of a generator has its flange or shoulder removed from its outer portion so in the event of a bending failure of the stub shaft the resulting axial load of the stub shaft is not transmitted to the main rotor shaft. Instead of a retention plug adjacent the distal end of the inside portion of the stub shaft, a knock out plug is lightly press-fit into the main rotor shaft. In the event of a failure, the outside portion of the stub shaft enters the main rotor shaft without applying an axial load onto the main rotor shaft, moves axially and displaces the knock-out plug without exiting the main rotor shaft.

A high speed generator cooling system directs a cooling oil spray through a chamber inside a coil support wedge assembly, which may be disposed adjacent to the generator coils. Heat from the generator coils may be conducted through the walls of the coil support wedge assembly and into the chamber where it is removed by the cooling oil spray passing through the chamber. The cooling oil passes through a generator rotor shaft and into a cooling passage in least one of the rotor laminations.

An inner crossover support clip may be used to support a crossover wire joining two adjacent rotor coils on a rotating machine, such as a generator. The support clip of the present invention may be capable of withstanding forces, such as centrifugal forces, that lead to the failure of conventional crossover wires. The support clip may be formed of a sheet material bent at an angle to form an inside surface thereon and may include a tie edge formed on each end of the sheet material. The tie edge attaches to adjacent rotor coils of a rotating machine and the inside surface supports a crossover wire electrically connecting the adjacent rotor coils.

A permanent magnet rotor of a generator is used to excite a electromagnet stator to generate electric power for the generator and to control a disengagement mechanism whereby the generator can disengage from an accessory, such as a gear box drive shaft, when the generator is not working properly. The permanent magnet is affixed to an outer ball screw which normally rotates with an inner ball screw that is operatively engaged to the accessory. An increased load to the electromagnet stator slows or stops rotation of the permanent magnet rotor and outer ball screw, causing the inner ball screw to move axially from the outer ball screw and away from an accessory and toward a re-settable lock.
