A cavitation assembly for purification of drinking water includes a generally cylindrically-shaped open-ended tube for flow of water therethrough, the tube comprising a transducer for converting electrical energy to acoustic energy and transmitting ultrasound through the water in the tube to induce cavitation in the water in the tube. A water moving means flows the water through the tube, and an electrical power source provides electrical power to the tube. The cavitation inactivates microorganisms in the water.

Systems and methods of the invention can equalize the pressure between an interior cavity and an environment exterior to the interior cavity, while providing for acoustic isolation between the two environments so that acoustic energy propagating through one environment does not cause acoustic vibrations in the other environment. A composite split cylinder transducer comprises an electromechanical driver and a cylindrical shell having a longitudinal gap. The shell further has a portion, disposed opposite the gap, comprised of a high strength material having increased stiffness. Transducers of this configuration are capable of being employed at greater ocean depths where high hydrostatic pressure conditions exist with little effect on acoustic performance.

The transducer of this invention provides a one-to-one input-to-output frequency relationship by the use of different magnetostrictive materials within the same transducer, the materials each having positive and negative strain expansion coefficients. The materials are selectively driven so that the transducer motion is in one direction for one polarity of the sinusoidal drive signal and in the opposite direction for the other polarity of the drive signal. The resultant transducer is capable of greater peak-to-peak excursion of the radiating face for the same length of magnetostrictive material than in the prior art biased-material transducer.
