Container closures for bottles, cans, tubs, etc. having a sloping or slanted flange on the container which matches a complementary flange on a closure cap. The flange is disposed at an angle of at least 10 degrees and a preferred angle of about 20 degrees for a conventional 63 mm closure and a preferred width of about 0.125 to 0.175 inches. A foil liner carried by the cap includes an induction heat activated adhesive on at least the portion thereof facing the complementary flange on the container for greatly increasing burst, vacuum and drop impact strength of the container because the adhesion is in shear rather than peel. Provision can be made for facilitating peeling of the liner to assist the consumer in opening the container. The liner may additionally be adhered to a horizontal surface of the container for further securing the liner thereto.

Induction heat sealed container closures

End panel () has its periphery () affixed to a flange portion () of container ring member () disposed in a planar position, and the flange portion () is then displaced from the plane for forming an angle (A) therewith. The method results in placing the interface between the end panel () and the flange portion () in sheer, rather than in peel, during retorting or unintentional impact loading.

A closure for a container, and a method for producing the same, wherein the closure includes an end panel and a plastic frame member connected together and which can be place over, or snapped onto, and then the frame member can be permanently attached and hermetically sealed to the flange of a metal, glass, plastic or composite container or can. The interface of the end panel and frame member is such as to hermetically, seal the container and yet the end panel can be readily peeled from at least a portion of the frame member for gaining access to the interior of the container. A pull tab, or ring, is provided to assist in peeling the end panel to an open position. Depending on the manner of attaching or securing the end panel to the frame member, separation or peeling can result from an adhesive failing or from a cohesive failing of the material forming the frame member, or the end panel, or the adhesive.

Method for producing a container closure

Tooling for forming an article which includes an injection molded peripheral frame defining an opening closed by a panel insert. The panel insert is struck from sheet material and together with an associated punch or carrier cooperates with a split mold to completely define the cavity for injection molding of the article. Inasmuch as the panel insert is heat bondable to the injection molded frame and forms a portion of the walls of the cavity, it is automatically bonded to the injection molded frame. The panel insert may be peelable from the frame and include a pull tab for effecting the same. The pull tab may be formed by the same punch which cuts out the panel insert, or the pull tab may be separately formed from sheet material adjacent an intended position of a panel insert and folded into overlying relation to the intended position of the panel insert and staked to the sheet material, after which the panel insert is cut from the sheet material by a punch. The pull tab is initially connected to the sheet material along an elongated fold line, after which not all of the pull tab connected to the sheet material is removed by the punch so as to define a centrally located pull tab which is aligned with the projecting part of the punch to effect a completely sealed mold cavity utilizing the panel insert with a previously formed and folded over pull tab staked thereto.

Method of molding a peripheral frame with a panel insert

Closures for containers, such as cans and the like, wherein the closure is comprised of an end panel and a frame member which, preferably, are attached together during an insert-injection molding operation used for forming the frame member. Depending upon the respective materials, the attachment therebetween may comprise heat-bonding or adhesives and the like. The various end panels have a displaceable panel portion for providing an opening in the closure to provide access to the product(s) within the container. The various panel portions are defined by weakening lines, perforations or cut lines in the end panel and molded runners for 'repairing' and/or sealing weakened or lanced portions of the end panels. The molded runners provide beam strength for protecting against excessive bulging during autoclave or other sterilization processes and against buckling during vacuum processing.

Method of making an injection molded frame having a panel insert

Container closure, and method for producing same

A reclosable closure for containers of the type used for keeping or storing product for some time following initial opening of the container. Typical uses would be for snack foods such as candies, peanuts, etc., and powdered products such as sugar, coffee, tea and other beverage mixes and the like. The closure also is adaptable for use with canned vagetables and meats and also with non-food products such as, for example, nails, tacks and a myriad of similar hardware items. The preferred closure includes an end panel and a ring-shaped frame member which are fused or otherwise adhered together during insert-injection molding of the frame member. Means are provided on the frame member for contacting an edge of the end panel, or an integral pull tab thereon, for restraining the end panel in a position for reclosing the container.

Reclosable container closure

A closure for a container in which a plastic closure part is tightly fitted into the container neck and a tab-operable disk in which the tab is releasably interlocked with the plastic part. The disk may also be directly mounted within an end portion of a container body and the container body may be provided with a replaceable overcap.

Closure for domed beverage containers and the like

A closure for a can in which the can comprises a circumscribing curl which interlocks with a sealing flange breakable upon lifting of the closure and which serves to hold the closure in closed position.

Can and closure therefor

A closure for a container wherein the closure is made of plastic and is attached to the container by means of a web and bead, the bead being held captive within a channel which is inscribed within the pour opening and the bead, providing a sharp edge and being arranged in such manner with the pull tab which is adapted to release the closure to concentrate the forces against a sharp cutting edge provided on the channel.

Plastic plug type closure for beverage containers

A lightweight container of thin metal such as aluminum which is subject to collapse when load is exerted thereagainst wherein the closure and container are made to minimize the application of such load, the container having a pouring neck and the closure having a panel with a groove into which the neck is telescoped and adhesively bonded thereto, the closure being openable by exerting tensile forces thereon for breeching a selected area of the securement of the closure panel to the neck and then fracturing a push-in section of the panel and whereupon minimal forces are required to open the container without imposing undesirable loads thereagainst. The closure also is tamperproof and vents prior to opening.
