An uncoated cutting tool that comprises a body containing a pocket. A polycrystalline cubic boron nitride blank has a cutting tip. The blank is brazed into the pocket using a braze alloy whereby there is a braze joint between the body and the polycrystalline cubic boron nitride blank. The braze alloy has a liquidus temperature of at least about 900 degrees Centigrade wherein the braze alloy is selected from the group comprising a nickel-gold braze alloy containing nickel and gold, a copper-gold braze alloy containing copper and gold, a silver-titanium braze alloy containing silver and titanium, and a silver-palladium braze alloy containing silver and palladium.

A coated cutting tool that comprises a body containing a pocket. The tool further includes a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride blank that is brazed into the pocket using a braze alloy. A cutting insert for metalworking operations has an insert core with a pair of cutting portions having cutting tips extending therefrom such that a toolholder having a pocket to accept such a core is suitable to accept different cutting inserts having a common core plus different cutting portions. As a result, for example, an 80&#xb0; diamond, a 55&#xb0; diamond and a 35&#xb0; diamond cutting insert may all be utilized within a common toolholder. The invention is also directed to a toolholder that will accept such a variety of cutting inserts.

A cutting insert has a central cavity with a plurality of pairs of clamping surfaces wherein the clamping surfaces of a pair are separated from one another by a recess to provide split face clamping surfaces within the cavity of the insert. The insert may be secured within the pocket of a toolholder.
