A light delivery system to provide light treatment to a patient includes a catheter assembly having a plurality of light sources that transmit light towards a target site within a patient. In one embodiment, the light delivery system has a plurality of light sources mounted to a flexible transparent base that extends at least partially through a distal tip of the catheter assembly. The light sources can be wire bonded or mounted in a flip chip arrangement onto the base. In one embodiment to produce the distal tip, an array of light energy sources can be held by an array of holders of a fixture device. A vacuum is applied to secure each light energy source in a corresponding holder. While the vacuum is applied, the energy sources are electrically connected by wire bonding. The vacuum can be reduced or stopped thereby permitting removal of the light energy sources from the fixture device.

Light delivery system

A three-dimensional ultrasound based assessment device includes a housing having a front end, a back end, and a cavity. An ultrasonic transducer assembly can be mounted to a ball joint which is, in turn, pivotably (pitch, roll, yaw) coupled to a socket proximate the front end. A resilient or elastic sheath retains pieces forming the socket under elastic compression, with the ball pivotally retained therein. A drive assembly positioned proximate a tail or end of a stem that extends from the ball joint may be operated to sweep the ball and ultrasonic transducer. A simple interface provides at least one of a number, text, graphic, color or symbol as a visual indicator indicative of at least one of a measurement of an anatomical structure or a comparison of the measurement of the anatomical structure with a reference, without providing images of the anatomical structure.

Ocular ultrasound based assessment device and related methods

Disclosed is an autonomically functioning, battery-powered apparatus for non-invasive delivery of transcranial ultrasound. Insonation is directed by electronic circuitry and programmable instructions in memory and is modulated to achieve stereotemporal modulation of insonation so as to eliminate the need for assisted cooling. The apparatus is provided with registration members to facilitate stereotactic placement of transducer arrays and does not require diagnostic imaging guidance during setup and operation. Non-invasive transcranial ultrasound apparatus

Disclosed is a 'hands-free', autonomously operating, battery-powered apparatus with electronic programmable actuation circuitry for non-invasive ultrasonic treatment of ischemic stroke, microatheromas of the cerebral vasculature, intracranial hypertension, and other cerebrovascular pathologies such as hypoperfusion associated with migraine. The apparatus is provided with registration members to facilitate stereotactic placement of the headset on the skull with respect to target intracranial anatomy. Once fitted in place on the skull and activated, the device does not require clinical intervention during operation; does not need skilled technical adjustment of the waveform patterns; and achieves therapeutic results with power consumption of less than 400 mAmp-hr, thus permitting extended portable operation without external power and eliminating the need for assisted cooling. Using a device of the invention, transcranial ultrasound may be self-administered. The device has application in therapeutic methods, such as methods for treating stroke or migraine, for non-invasively augmenting drug action, and for release or dispersal of endogenous neurovascular mediators.

Hands-free operator-independent transcranial ultrasound apparatus and methods

An ultrasound probe is provided having an ultrasound module received in a housing thereof, the ultrasound module including a plurality of transducers longitudinally spaced apart within the housing and a control and processing system electrically coupled to the transducers for collecting ultrasonic data representative of a target biological tissue when the ultrasound probe is in operation. A motor is likewise received in the housing to rotate, oscillate and/or translate the ultrasound module in a data collection mode. Coupling fluid is received in the housing to at least partially surround the ultrasound module and the motor. A method of obtaining ultrasonic data representative of a target biological tissue, such as a bladder, for diagnostic purposes is also provided.

An apparatus for directing light to an eye for exciting a photosensitizer includes a high output or super bright LED and an optic that receives light from the LED and concentrates the light so that it is nearly collimated. The LED is a single light source that is used for both therapy and for diagnostics or aiming.

A system which includes at least one ultrasound data collection device which is programmable to carry out a specific ultrasound procedure on a selected part of a human body of a patient. The resulting ultrasound data is transmitted via a local server at the site of the data collection device to the internet and from there to a web database server which processes the raw ultrasound data to produce medical result information, including ultrasound images, which is then sent to a skilled technician, who accepts the results, rejects or edits them. Accepted medical results are transmitted back to the medical practitioner, while edited medical results are reprocessed, the results of which are transmitted to the medical practitioner.

System for remote evaluation of ultrasound information obtained by a programmed application-specific data collection device

A system which includes at least one ultrasound data collection device which is programmable to carry out a specific ultrasound procedure on a selected part of a human body of a patient. The resulting ultrasound data is transmitted via a local server at the site of the data collection device to the internet and from there to a web database server which processes the raw ultrasound data and provides application-specific information, such as a three-dimensional model, which can be used for diagnostic interpretation of the body part imaged by the ultrasound suitable for use in the treatment of the patient.

A data collection device obtains three-dimensional ultrasound scan information of a portion of the abdominal aorta. A plurality of transducer elements are arranged to provide overlapping coverage. The data collection device is first positioned over the aorta by an operator; a one-dimensional scan with a Doppler sound generator operating on the blood flow is used to verify proper initial positioning of the device. Three-dimensional scan information is then obtained and converted from plane coordinates into spherical coordinates such that the resulting converted scan line planes are perpendicular to the aorta. The information in each converted scan line plane is then processed to determine the boundaries of the aorta, from which diameter information is then calculated. Diameter measurements over a given region of the aorta can be used to determine and monitor an aneurysm in the aorta.

Three-dimensional system for abdominal aortic aneurysm evaluation

The system includes a function for generating a plurality of ultrasound scan planes, each separated by a selected angle, to produce a scan cone having an ultrasound scan cone boundary for scanning the bladder, or other organ. The amount, if any, of the scanned bladder which extends beyond the ultrasound scan cone boundary is then determined, as well as the percentage of the bladder within an inner cone boundary relative to that within the ultrasound cone boundary. A signal is provided, specifically illumination of one of four orthogonal arrows in a display, indicating the direction that the transducer should be moved in order to more accurately center the bladder within the ultrasound scan cone boundary. Re-aiming of the transducer is considered necessary when the ratio of the percentages is less than 70%, while if the percentage ratio is greater than 70%, aiming is optional.

A system which includes at least one ultrasound data collection device which is programmable to carry out a specific ultrasound procedure. The system includes an ultrasound apparatus which provides successive images of a bladder during the voiding process, the images being approximately one second long so as to provide an accurate picture of the action of the bladder during voiding. The images are then processed to form a substantially continuous moving image, i.e. a video or motion picture. The video covers approximately five minutes so as to capture the entire voiding event. The system is initiated typically by the user by pressing a button or other implement on the ultrasound apparatus which is carried by a belt or on a garment adjacent the abdomen of the user. Several processing techniques are used to compensate for any movement of the user or the device during the voiding process so as to provide a coherent and continuous moving image of the bladder during the voiding process.

The apparatus is worn by a user and includes means for automatically scanning the bladder of the user with ultrasound signals. The returning signals are used to calculate the volume of urine in the bladder and also to calculate the actual surface area of the bladder. The theoretical surface area of a spherical bladder having the said calculated volume is then determined. A surface area index (SAI) is then determined as follows: ##EQU1## The SAI value is an indication of the roundness of the bladder and hence the pressure within the bladder.

A pulse Doppler system for determining blood flow velocity in a blood vessel in a body, in particular the carotid artery. A sample region covering a section of the artery is investigated, using two spaced transmitters, one with a frequency of 3 MHz and the other with a frequency of 4.5 MHz. The received echo beams are then processed to determine the component blood velocities for each frequency. The two component values are then resolved into a true blood flow velocity for the sample region. That information is used to produce a color-coded velocity map of the artery, which may be conveniently displayed to the operator.
