A network interface device decodes a first set of encoded bits in a fixed-length frame according to a first error correction encoding scheme to generate a first set of bits among decoded bits. The network interface device decodes a second set of encoded bits in the fixed-length frame according to a second error correction encoding scheme to generate a second set of bits among the decoded bits. The network interface device generates a first set of bit blocks and a second set of bit blocks from the decoded bits at least by de-aggregating the decoded bits. A decoder of the network interface device decodes the first set of bit blocks and the second set of bit blocks to generate a plurality of uncoded bits.

A first physical layer device includes a first transmitter and a first receiver. The first transmitter transmits first data to a second physical layer device over a medium at a first line rate during a first transmit period. The first receiver is configured to not receive data during the first transmit period and an echo reflection period occurring after the first transmit period. The echo reflection period is based on a length of the medium between the first physical layer device and the second physical layer device. The first receiver is configured to, after the echo reflection period, receive second data from the second physical layer device over the medium at a second line rate that is less than the first line rate.

Embodiments of the present disclosure utilizes the natural properties of RFI noise on a wireline link. Since differential RFI noise in the system has some correlation with the common mode noise on the cable, a replica of RFI noise can be regenerated by an adaptive filter based on information about the common mode noise. The replica RFI is subtracted from the equalizer output prior to the data decision circuitry or slicer. In this method, the system does not require expensive cable, nor does the equalizer suffer additional loss due to an RFI notch filter. Since RFI can be detected and mitigated, this information can also be coupled to safety systems to increase functional safety under high EMI conditions.

Embodiments described herein provide a method for providing a compatible backplane operation mechanism for 2.5-gigabit Ethernet. A first input of data including a first sequence-ordered set in compliance with a first interface protocol is received from a medium access control (MAC) layer. The first input of data is encoded into four outputs of encoded data including a second sequence-ordered set in compliance with a second interface protocol. The first sequence-ordered set in a first form of a sequence code followed by three bytes of data is mapped to the second sequence-ordered set in a second form of consecutive units of the sequence code followed by an encoded data byte. The four parallel outputs of encoded data are serialized into a serial output. The serial output to a linking partner is transmitted on a physical layer of an Ethernet link at a speed specified in the second interface protocol.

Systems and methods described herein provide a method for operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) of data message transmission. The method comprises reading a transmit register of a transmitter associate with a first management entity to determine a transmit status of the transmit register. The method further comprises loading a data message into the transmit register when the transmit status of the transmit register indicates availability. The method further comprises embedding the data message as an out-of-band message with physical code sublayer modulation, and transmitting the out-of-band message on the physical code sublayer to a receiver associated with a second management entity. A transmit state machine of the transmitter and a receive state machine of the receiver establish a handshake to allow the out-of-band message to be passed asynchronously.

A network interface groups and encodes a plurality of bits into a plurality of bit blocks such that a number of bits within the fixed-length frame are available for use as parity bits in a fixed-length frame. The network interface device aggregates a first set of bit blocks and a second set of bit blocks into an aggregated bit block, and encodes a portion of the aggregated bit block using a first encoder to generate a first set of encoded bits according to a first error correction encoding scheme. The network interface device encodes a remaining portion of the aggregated bit block using a second encoder to generate a second set of encoded bits according to a second error correction encoding scheme. A number of parity bits generated by the first and second encoders does not exceed the number of bits in the fixed-length frame made available for use as parity bits.

Methods and network device for uncoded bit protection in 10Gbase-T ethernet

A first device receives a block encoded communication frame from a second device via a single communication channel on a twisted wire pair. The communication frame comprises a plurality of partial frames. The first device maintains a first counter that indicates a count of partial frames corresponding to communication frames exchanged between the first device and the second device. While the first device is in a low power mode of operation: the first device uses the first counter to determine timing of a window, powers up at least a receive portion of the first network interface device, and determines, during the window, whether the second device transmitted a signal configured to prompt the first device to exit the low power mode of operation. In response to the second device transmitting the signal, the first device exits the low power mode of operation.
