High concentrations of recycle polymer are gasified in a partial oxidation gasifier to make a syngas useful to make a variety of chemicals and polymers, such as cellulose ester. Polymers such as cellulose esters can be made that are obtained from sustainable sources, recycle sources, and are biodegradable. Circularity in the manufacture of textiles and/or plastics made from the fibers of such cellulose esters can now be achieved. The process of making such a syngas from high concentrations of recycle polymer (e.g. textiles and/or plastics) includes campaigning for the production of syngas.

Polymers, articles, and chemicals made from high concentrated recycle derived syngas

A recycle content ethylene is fed to a reactor to make propionaldehyde having recycle content. The recycle ethylene feedstock is derived directly or indirectly from the cracking of recycle content pyrolysis oil. The cracking of the pyrolysis oil can be conducted in a gas furnace or a split furnace.

A mixed ester composition having a recycle content value is obtained by reacting a recycle content feedstock to make a recycle content mixed ester or by deducting from a recycle inventory a recycle content value applied to a mixed ester composition. At least a portion of the recycle content value in the feedstock or in an allotment obtained by a mixed ester manufacturer has its origin in recycled waste and/or pyrolysis of recycled waste and/or in thermal steam cracking of recycle content pyoil.

Pre-ground plastics of small particle size not more than 2 mm are co-fed into a solid fossil fuel fed entrained flow partial oxidation gasifier. High solids concentrations in the feedstock stream can be obtained without significant impact on the feedstock stream stability and pumpability. A consistent quality of syngas can be continuously produced, including generation of carbon dioxide and a carbon monoxide/hydrogen ratio while stably operating the gasifier and avoiding the high tar generation of fluidized bed or fixed bed waste gasifiers and without impacting the operations of the gasifier. The subsequent syngas produced from this material can be used to produce a wide range of chemicals.

Densified textile aggregates are co-fed with a fuel into a partial oxidation gasifier. High solids concentrations in the feedstock composition can be obtained without significant impact on the feedstock composition stability and pumpability. A consistent quality of densified textile derived syngas can be continuously produced, including generation of carbon dioxide and a carbon monoxide/hydrogen ratio while stably operating the gasifier and avoiding the high tar generation of fluidized bed or fixed bed waste gasifiers and without impacting the operations of the gasifier. The densified textile derived syngas quality, composition, and throughput are suitable for produce a wide range of chemicals and polymers, including methanol, acetic acid, methyl acetate, acetic anhydride, and cellulose esters through a variety of reaction schemes in which at least a portion of the chemical or polymer originates with densified textile derived syngas.

A composition having a recycle content value is obtained by reacting a recycle content feedstock to make a recycle content alpha olefin or by deducting from a recycle inventory a recycle content value applied to an alpha olefin composition. At least a portion of the recycle content value in the feedstock or in an allotment obtained by an alpha olefin manufacturer has its origin in recycled waste and/or pyrolysis of recycled waste and/or in thermal steam cracking of recycle content pyoil.

A process for preparing a recycle cellulose ester and a recycle cellulose ester composition and articles made with such recycle cellulose esters comprising at least one cellulose ester having at least one substituent on an anhydroglucose unit (AU) derived from recycled plastic content syngas are provided. The recycled plastic content syngas can be obtained by gasifying feedstocks containing a solid fossil fuel such as coal, a plastic, and water. The plastic can be post-consumer or postindustrial plastic.

Cellulose ester compositions derived from recycled plastic content syngas

Coal gasifiers using technology developed by Texaco Development Corporation, use coal slurry and oxygen as feed stocks. During start-ups, the raw gas produced in the gasifier must be flared until the downstream clean-up and recovery plants can be started. In order to reduce emissions through the flare during start-up, a technique was developed to start the gasifiers and downstream plants on a sulfur free, liquid, organic fuel. Once downstream plants are on-line, the fuel feed is switched to coal slurry on the same burner. The switch is accomplished while maintaining pressure and without interrupting to the fuel feed.
