Aspects of the disclosure relate generally to uninterruptible power supply units for systems requiring back up power. Each unit may include UPS circuitry for controlling charging and allowing discharging of a battery. The UPS circuitry may includes a controller and a plurality of metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistors ('MOSFET') switches. The MOSFETs may include charging and discharging MOSFETs arranged in series with the battery all driven by a single gate driver, such as a controller. In this regard, the controller may limit the charging current though all of the MOSFETs and charge the battery. The MOSFETs may be arranged such that if the charging MOSFET fails, the redundant charging MOSFET may continue to limit the charging current to the battery. Similarly, a redundant discharging MOSFET may be arranged in series with a discharging MOSFET in order to continue to provide discharging current if the discharging MOSFET fails.

Aspects of the disclosure relate generally to relates server rack architecture for housing computing components on a plurality of shelves. More specifically, the shelves of a particular rack may each include a power and data bus ('PDB') pre-configured to support a particular number of devices of the shelf. A PDB may also include a number of power and data connections for blind mating with the devices of the shelf. The PDB may include two blades which extend away from the PDB and blind mate with the main bus bar. Thus, each PDB may route both power and data signals between a main bus bar for the rack and each of the devices of the shelf. A shelf may be reconfigured for a different number of devices by changing the configuration of the PDB.

Rack power and data bus

Aspects of the disclosure relate generally to rack systems for housing computing devices. The rack may include shelves supported by flanges of a pair of corresponding inserts. The flanges may be spaced along the length of each of the inserts. The distance between the flanges may define the height of a shelf when placed in the rack. The pair of corresponding inserts may be placed along an inner sidewall of the rack by mating hooks of the inserts with corresponding slots of the inner sidewall and subsequently removed by demating the hooks and slots. For example, a pair of inserts with one distance between the flanges may be replaced by a pair of inserts with another distance between the flanges in order to increase the shelf height of the rack. By replacing the shelves and/or the inserts, a user may quickly and easily in order to reconfigure the rack.

Interchangeable rack system

Aspects of the disclosure relate generally to rack systems for housing computing devices. The rack may include a plurality of removable shelves. A removable shelf may include a column having a plurality of slots. By stacking a plurality of the removable shelves in the rack, a larger column may be formed. This larger column may provide additional space to mount other features. In one example, the larger column may be used to mount a wire duct. The wire duct may be attached to a mounting plate having a plurality of hooks. The hooks of the mounting plate may mate with the slots of the columns of the shelves. The mounting plates may be used to mount features at other locations on the rack as well.

An apparatus for extending a bus bar is disclosed. The apparatus may include a first extension piece and a second extension piece. The first extension piece may have multiple surfaces. A first surface may have a first group of receiving portions, a second may have a second group of receiving portions, and a third surface may have a curvature that offsets the third surface from the second surface. The second extension piece may also have multiple surfaces. The second extension piece may have a first surface that includes a first group of receiving portions, a second surface that includes a second group of receiving portions, and a third surface that is substantially parallel to the second surface and includes a third group of receiving portions. When connected to a bus bar, the first extension piece and the second extension piece may be substantially adjacent to one another.

Aspects relate generally to hot swap control in uninterruptible power supply units for systems requiring backup power. A unit may include a pair of MOSFET switches configured as a bidirectional switch for battery charging and discharging current control. This configuration allows the unit to limit inrush current when the unit is connected to a DC power bus of a power system and also allows the unit to eliminate any current flow when it is disconnected. Upon insertion and extraction of the unit, the MOSFET switches are disabled to prevent any disturbances on the DC power bus. Hot swapping in the unit ensures that the overall power system, including the unit and the DC bus, operates reliably.

Hot swap control in uninterruptible power supply

A system may include a rack that is configured to receive electrical power from a power distribution box and to distribute the electrical power to one or more electrical loads. The system may include at least one power strip having a first circuit and a second circuit that are mounted in the rack. The first circuit may include outlets into which the electrical loads are connected and a first portion of a connector interface. The second circuit may include an enclosure that houses an electrical configuration including at least one power cord that is coupled to the power distribution box and a second portion of the connector interface that is configured to couple the second circuit to the first circuit by mating with the first portion of the connector interface, where the second circuit is removable from the rack and interchangeable with other second circuits that comprise different electrical configurations.

Adaptable computer rack for power distribution

An electrical assembly that allows a plurality of electronic assemblies to be cooled by a number of fans. The assembly includes a housing which has a plenum chamber that is located between a rack chamber and a fan chamber. The rack chamber is separated from the plenum chamber by a backbone wall. The fan chamber is separated from the plenum chamber by a fan wall that is perpendicular to the backbone wall. The rack chamber contains a plurality of electronic assemblies such as hard disk drives. The fan chamber contains a plurality of individual fans. The fans induce an air flow from the rack chamber to the fan chamber through the plenum chamber. The plenum chamber provides a uniform pressure that induces an equal flow rate across each disk drive in the rack chamber. The fans are controlled by a control circuit which can detect the failure of one fan and increase the speed of the remaining fans to maintain the plenum chamber pressure. The constant plenum chamber pressure insures an equal flowrate across each disk drive even when one of the fans fails.

An improved attachment mechanism for attaching the motherboard in a computer system to its chassis is disclosed. The attachment mechanism includes a rail that engages at least two opposing edges of the motherboard and a hook mechanism that engages a catch formed in the chassis. The hook mechanism is secured to a central portion of the motherboard. The rail and hook mechanism cooperate to securely couple the motherboard to the chassis without requiting the use of extensive usable space on the motherboard. The described arrangement permits the motherboard to be quickly and easily installed and released.
