A piston for an internal combustion engine includes a piston body having an outer cylindrical surface defining a longitudinal piston axis, a combustion face defining a compound combustion bowl, and a compound rim extending radially outward from the compound combustion bowl to the outer cylindrical surface. The compound combustion bowl includes a convex inner bowl surface defining a conical projection and a concave outer bowl surface. The compound rim includes a flat outer rim surface adjoining the outer cylindrical surface, and a convex inner rim surface adjoining the compound combustion bowl. The convex inner bowl surface transitions smoothly to the concave outer bowl surface, and the convex inner rim surface transitions abruptly to the concave outer bowl surface at an edge of the compound combustion bowl.

Piston having combustion bowl shaped to balance combustion efficiency and emission properties

A piston for a compression ignition internal combustion engine includes a piston body having a combustion face defining a combustion bowl, and the combustion face including a compound bowl surface and a compound rim surface. The combustion face is profiled to balance a combustion efficiency property of the piston with emissions properties of the piston, and includes a profile of rotation defining a convex curve segment bisected by the longitudinal axis, and a plurality of concave curve segments outboard of the convex curve segment. The profile of rotation further includes a compound rim profile defining a plurality of convex curve segments corresponding to an inner rim surface. The convex curve segment of the compound bowl profile defines a relatively small radius of curvature, and the plurality of convex curve segments corresponding to the inner rim surface define a relatively large radius of curvature. The combustion face includes an abrupt transition from the compound bowl surface to the compound rim surface.

An engine system is disclosed. The engine system includes an engine, an intake system for providing intake air to the engine and an exhaust system receiving exhaust gas from the engine. The engine system also includes a first exhaust turbine arranged downstream of the engine and a second and third exhaust turbines coupled in parallel and arranged downstream of the first exhaust turbine. A first valve is associated with the second and third exhaust turbines, the first valve configured to at least partially restrict exhaust gas to one of the second and third exhaust turbines and increase exhaust gas to the other turbine. The engine system also includes an exhaust gas recirculation system configured to redirect at least a portion of exhaust gas from the exhaust system to the intake system.

Engine system having multi-stage turbocharging and exhaust gas recirculation

An exhaust treatment system for an engine is disclosed and may have an air induction circuit, an exhaust circuit, and an exhaust recirculation circuit. The air induction circuit may be configured to direct air into the engine. The exhaust circuit may be configured to direct exhaust from the engine and include a turbine driven by the exhaust, a particulate filter disposed in series with and downstream of the turbine, and a catalytic device disposed in series with and downstream of the particulate filter. The exhaust recirculation circuit may be configured to selectively redirect at least some of the exhaust from between the particulate filter and the catalytic device to the air induction circuit. The catalytic device is selected to create backpressure within the exhaust circuit sufficient to ensure that, under normal engine operating conditions above low idle, exhaust can flow into the air induction circuit without throttling of the air.

Low pressure EGR system having full range capability

A method for recirculating exhaust gas includes operating an intake valve to open an intake port of a combustion chamber, operating an exhaust valve to open an exhaust port of the combustion chamber, and directing exhaust gas from the exhaust port to an exhaust recirculation port of the combustion chamber. The method also includes operating an exhaust recirculation valve to open the exhaust recirculation port to allow the exhaust gas to enter the combustion chamber and determining at least one valve actuation condition for controlling actuation of each of the intake valve and the exhaust recirculation valve.

Exhaust gas recirculation system with in-cylinder valve actuation

A power system is provided having a power source, a first power source section with a first intake passage and a first exhaust passage, a second power source section with a second intake passage and a second exhaust passage, and an oxygen separator. The second intake passage may be fluidly isolated from the first intake passage.
