A vehicle diagnostic system monitors user-selected analog diagnostic data that is received from a vehicle to determine whether it meets a user-specified trigger characteristic and records user-selected digital diagnostic data that is received from the vehicle in response to a determination that the trigger characteristic has been met. The user-selected monitored diagnostic data may instead be digital and the user-selected recorded diagnostic data may instead be analog. The user may make both selections from a set of analog and digital diagnostic data types. Other features, objects, benefits, components, methods and variations are also disclosed.

A system and a machine-implemented method for rendering, on a display device, a first data graph concerning data received from a first data source. A second data graph concerning data received from a second data source is rendered on the display device, and superimposed onto the first data graph to generate a superimposed data graph.

Measurement data storage is triggered in response to occurrence of a user set condition with respect to one or more user-selected measured parameters, to thereby capture real-time monitored test data. In an application for a vehicle diagnostic tool, such as an engine analyzer, the measurements and attendant display may be provided during engine operation or actual vehicle operation. The tool software allows a user to specify any one or more of the measured parameters; and for any selected parameter, the user can identify an event with regard to the selected parameter. During the test, the processor executing the software captures measured parameter data, and the processor analyses the appropriate measured parameter data with respect to any and/or all user specified conditions. Triggering may be based on occurrence of an event or combinations of events. When triggered, the software will cause the tool to store some amount of captured data and/or pause the display to allow the user to analyze all available data.

Methods and devices for measuring and calculating various kinds of parameters of a running engine are disclosed. A camera may be positioned to capture a plurality of images of a moving component that is being driven by the an engine. From the plurality of images, a velocity of the moving component may be measured, and an acceleration then derived. From the derived acceleration, various parameters of the running engine may be calculated, including but not limited to, number of firing cylinders, rotational rate, and relative cylinder balance. These and other parameters may then be reported, such as through a display screen, to a user. The methods and devices disclosed herein may also generate recommendations for specific kinds of maintenance to an engine based on the results of parameter measurements and calculations, then report those recommendations to a user.
