A method for using magnetic tape having damaged areas is disclosed. The method may include writing data to streaming magnetic tape, determining if the data write was successful, and responding to an unsuccessful data write by interrupting the data writing and advancing the magnetic tape forward a predetermined distance. Additionally, the method may include attempting to write data at the next location on the magnetic tape and determining if the data write was successful. The method may further include repeating the steps of advancing the tape, attempting to write, and determining whether the data write was successful following any determination that an attempted data write was not successful. The method may include further include resuming writing data to streaming magnetic tape at a location where a data write is determined to be successful.

Systems and methods for storing data to magnetic tape having damaged areas

A magnetic tape cartridge, such as a Linear Tape Open cartridge, stores parameters in a non-volatile memory, such as a Media Auxiliary Memory page of a Cartridge Memory, for use in reading and writing to a magnetic tape. A backup copy of the parameters is made in the non-volatile memory for use in reading and writing to the magnetic tape in the event that the primary copy of the parameters becomes corrupt. If a tape drive fails to retrieve the primary copy of the parameters, the tape drive looks for the backup copy at a predetermined memory location, such as location 200h in the Cartridge Memory.

System and method for recovery of information stored on a corrupt storage device

A system and method for identifying signal degradation in a tape drive is disclosed in which a data signal read from the tape drive and the signal characteristics of the undecoded portion of the data stream are compared with a set of known values. The undecoded portion of the data may comprise the preamble portion of the signal and the comparison set of known values may be saved to local storage on the tape drive. If the comparison of the signal characteristics of the undecoded portion of the data stream and the known set of signal values indicates that data signal is degraded, a notification is generated that indicates that the signal at the tape drive is degraded.

System and method for identifying the signal integrity of a signal from a tape drive

A generally rectangular outer housing is sized to fit within the full height five and one quarter inch form factor. A drawer is mounted for sliding motion within the housing along a longitudinal axis thereof from a retracted position in which the drawer is substantially fully contained within the housing to an extended position in which a forward portion of the drawer extends beyond a forward transverse end of the housing. A DAT tape drive is mounted within a rear portion of the drawer and has a forwardly opening cassette insertion slot. A cassette magazine is provided that has a plurality of vertically spaced receptacles for holding a plurality of DAT cassettes in a vertically stacked configuration. A magazine loader is mounted in the forward portion of the drawer for receiving and vertically reciprocating the cassette magazine and for selectively transferring cassettes between the magazine and the cassette insertion slot of the DAT tape drive.

A take-up leader is wound onto an inner driven hub of a take-up reel until a take-up link, which is connected to the end of the take-up leader, is pulled into a recess defined between the inner driven hub and a free-wheeling outer hub and abuts a stopper feature formed on the outer hub member. The inner hub is operatively connected to the outer abutment on the hub and both undergo synchronous rotation. A cartridge link, connected to the take-up link, is also drawn into the recess. The end surface of the cartridge link has a curved shape formed essentially contiguous with the outer periphery of the outer hub. A cartridge leader, which is connected to the cartridge link, is then induced to wind onto the outer periphery of the outer hub with essentially no loss of circularity. The cartridge leader can be made of the same material as the take-up leader, or can be an extension of the magnetic tape which is stored in the cartridge.

A device for positively restraining data tape cassettes within a magazine of a cassette loading assembly to prevent the cassettes from becoming dislodged from the magazine when the cassettes are not engaged within the tape drive. The device includes a spring loaded cantilever having an end section which engages a detent conventionally formed in the edge portion of the data cassette tape. When the cantilever end section is engaged in the detent, the cassette tape is securely held against a rear interior wall of the magazine. The spring loaded cantilever is pivotally mounted by a shaft to an interior side wall of the magazine. In operation, a cassette transfer system engages the tape cassette to load the cassette into the tape drive. However, prior to such engagement, a bracket mounted on the cassette transfer system contacts a load-receiving end of the cantilever opposite the end section within the cassette tape detent. The bracket biases the load-receiving end inward toward the cassette, thereby pivoting the opposite end section out of the detent. Once the end section is removed from the detent, the cassette tape may be freely loaded into the tape drive.

Magazine cassette locking device

Disclosed is a cassette loading system in a housing having an aperture which delivers a plurality of cassettes one cassette at a time into a cassette drive. The system includes a cassette drive having a cassette acceptor and a cassette magazine mounted through the aperture. The magazine defines a plurality of spaces, with each of the plurality of spaces sized and shaped to receive a cassette. The magazine is also adjustable within the aperture to align each of the plurality of spaces with the cassette acceptor of the drive. The system also include a cassette transfer system which moves each of the cassettes into the acceptor of the drive and retracts each of the cassettes upon ejection by the drive. The transfer system includes a cassette transfer motor which is activated to cause motion which moves a cassette into and out of the acceptor, a plurality of cassette drive wheels which can engage a cassette to move the cassette into the acceptor of the drive and to retract a cassette upon ejection by the drive and an engagement assembly which is activated in order to engage the drive wheels with a cassette in order to move a cassette into the acceptor or to retract a cassette upon ejection by the drive. An engagement assembly for a loader is also disclosed. Additionally, there is disclosed a method of sequentially loading cassettes into a tape drive system using the novel cassette loading system.

Cassette loading system

A changer method and apparatus for the loading and unloading of data storage modules from a module drive, such as a computer back-up tape drive, is described. To load the drive, the changer pulls a data storage module, such as a DAT cassette, from a magazine by its end, or face, farthest from the drive. To unload a module from the drive, the changer pushes the module by its end or face found furthest in the interior of the drive's module operative station.
