An SMA-style optical waveguide connector is disclosed comprising a tubular contact body receiving a conical profiled primary ferrule therein. The primary ferrule includes a profiled bore for receiving an optical waveguide therethrough, with a forward end segment of the waveguide protruding forward from the primary ferrule and out of a forward end of the contact body. An alignment ferrule is mounted over the forward end of the contact body, and provides a centrally disposed aperture to receive and axially center the forward end of the optical waveguide. The alignment ferrule is resiliently and radially compressible, so that upon force fitting the contact body into a tubular splice bushing, the alignment ferrule radially compresses to position the contact body on the major axis of the splice bushing.

Optical waveguide connector

A low profile, sleeve form bushing is cast from metal and provides a coupling for an optical cable and a photoelectric element which is plugged into one end of the bushing and held in place with a press-on retention plate. A slotted flange on the bushing receives the rim of an inverted metal receptacle, placed over the photoelectric element to serve as a shielding cover at one end of the bushing. The other end of the bushing is of sleeve form, externally threaded to receive a threaded cap of a resilient ferrule connector.

Photoelectric element/optical cable connector

An optical detector assembly is disclosed for detecting light-dark variations in an encoded surface or the like. The assembly includes a resilient ferrule having a profiled bore for receiving a transmitting and a receiving optical waveguide therein in axially adjacent relationship and crimping means for radially compressing a nose portion of the ferrule around the waveguides holding the waveguides in closest proximity. End surfaces of the assembly waveguides and resilient ferrule are subsequently prepared at a common prescribed angle so that, upon normally positioning the detector assembly above the encoded surface, transmitted light is refracted at the transmitting waveguide end surface toward a relatively small detection zone of the encoded surface. The like-angled end surface of the receiving waveguide receives, with refraction, light reflected from the detection zone.

Optical detector assembly and method

In a packaging means for packaging together a light source or detecting means, a lens, and an optical fiber there is provided a sleeve for holding the light source/detector at one end of the sleeve and the lens at the other end to form a lens package. To hold the lens package there is provided a housing having first and second cavities opening onto each other and separated by shoulder means. The optical fiber is positioned in the first cavity with its end just short of the shoulder means. The lens package is retained in the second cavity with the lens abutted against said shoulder means with its focal axis aligned with the axis of the optical fiber and further with the tolerance error of the distance between said lens and the end of the optical fiber being determined largely by the variations in radius of said lens and variations in the position of the end of the optical fiber. The lens package can be retained in the second cavity by a matrix of flexible plastic partitions extending into the second cavity from the shoulder means in a box-like configuration which frictionally grips the lens package in an aligned position with the optical fiber.

The disclosure relates to a method and apparatus for connecting optical waveguides in coincident alignment, and features a connector divided into intermating sections, with each section having a fixture portion which is connected to an optical cable to provide a datum plane for precise waveguide positioning, and with each connector section further including a waveguide supporting portion in the form of an open box configuration latchingly receiving a corresponding fixture portion therein; and the open box configuration being provided with a projecting tongue portion provided with a pad of compliant material which laterally supports each waveguide in a corresponding fixture portion, the compliant material intimately encircling the waveguides upon intermating the connector sections and the compliant material further undergoing elastomeric deformation yieldably encircling the waveguides to align the waveguide central axes colinearally or coincidentally.

Overlap type waveguide connector assembly and method

A connector means for connecting together two optical fibers whose ends have been stripped of optical cladding to expose the cores. The connector comprises means for gripping the fibers at unstripped sections thereof with a predetermined length of fiber extending from datum or reference surfaces on the connector such that the ends of the stripped fibers face each other and are spaced apart a very short distance of the order of not more than one and one-half times the core diameter. The connector further comprises a pair of elastomeric elements each with grooves of semi-cylindrical cross-section formed therein that fit together to form a cylindrical bore which retains the stripped ends of the two fibers. Because the diameter of the cylindrical bore is less than the diameter of either core retained therein, the resilient walls of the cylindrical bore will give way and will thereby force the ends of the two cores into substantial concentric alignment. The elastomeric elements must be made of a material having an index of refraction which is less than that of the cores and preferably is equal to that of the optical cladding.

Means for in-line connection of optical fiber pairs

The invention relates to a tool and a method for simultaneously staking a plurality of wires into an electrical connector of the type having two rows of contact members, one row overlying the other. More particularly, the tool includes a connector support assembly on the moving ram member. This moving assembly holds the connector so that the openings of the wire-in-slot blades face downwardly. A wire support assembly is positioned on the lower, stationary member. The wires to be staked into the contact members are dressed across a series of plates having functionally-related posts and slots. The connector is brought down onto the stationary assembly which supports the wires so that the wire-in-slot blades may be pushed onto them. Both assemblies include lateral restraining members which confine the blades during the staking operation.

This invention relates to an assembly for use on a pair of adjacent posts where a signal circuit is connected to one post and a ground circuit is connected to the other post. More particularly, the invention includes a molded housing of insulating material having passageways therethrough and recesses for terminating devices therein, and terminating devices having wire terminating means and post receiving spring members thereon.

Lead assembly

This invention relates to a device for terminating coaxial ribbon cable to a paddle card, printed circuit board ('PCB') or the like. More particularly, the invention includes an insulating housing having a plurality of spaced openings each containing a terminal. The contact members on one end of the terminals extend upwardly and receive bared wires extending across the housing through slots in the vertical front and rear walls. The pins on the opposite side of the terminals are soldered to the paddle card or PCB.
