Hot working a nickel-chromium alloy that contains by weight percent, 42 to 65 chromium, 0.002 to 0.1 calcium, 0.002 to 0.1 magnesium, 0 to 2 aluminum, about 0 to 5 cobalt, 0 to 3 copper, 0 to 5 iron, 0 to 5 manganese, 0 to 3 molybdenum, 0 to 3 niobium, 0 to 2 silicon, 0 to 3 tantalum, 0 to 5 titanium, 0 to 5 tungsten, 0 to 5 vanadium, 0 to 1 zinc, 0 to 0.2 carbon 0 to 0.1 silver, 0 to 0.1 cerium, 0 to 0.1 phosphorus, 0 to 0.1 sulfur, less than 0.005 total boron, rare earths and zirconium and balance nickel and incidental impurities, at a temperature of at least 800.degree. C. improves formability for .alpha.-phase chromium alloys.

Hot working high-chromium alloy

The alloy consists of an age hardenable-corrosion resistant alloy useful for oil and gas applications that require resistance to low-level sour gas conditions. This alloy contains, by weight percent, 20 to 36 nickel, 18 to 25 chromium, 1 to 8 molybdenum, 1.2 to 4 titanium, less than 0.5 aluminum, 0.001 to 0.5 carbon, less than 1.5 niobium, less than 10 manganese, less than 5 copper, less than 4 cobalt, less than 0.1 total calcium, cerium and magnesium, 0 to 0.01 boron and balance iron and incidental impurities and deoxidizers.

High strength corrosion resistant alloy

A nickel-base alloy having characteristics midway between selected stainless steels and INCONEL.RTM. alloy 625LCF.RTM.. Flexible and particularly useful for exhaust system bellows, wires and braids, the alloy includes about 24-42% nickel, about 18-28% chromium, 1.5-6% molybdenum, 0.2-1 % titanium, up to 1% aluminum, the balance iron, and up to about 1.4% silicon. The alloy demonstrates a novel characteristic of becoming stronger and more ductile during contemplated service temperatures of about 800.degree.-1400.degree. F. (427.degree. C.-760.degree. C.).

Flexible alloy and components made therefrom

A device for stopping flow of molten metal through a conduit having a longitudinal central passage. A ceramic seal is placed through a wall of a ceramic pipe for preventing flow of the molten metal through the opening in the wall of the ceramic pipe. A nonmetallic plug is located adjacent the ceramic seal. A lever arm adjacent the plug is used for depressing the ceramic seal and the nonmetallic plug vertically into the ceramic pipe through the longitudinal central passage to prevent flow of molten metal through the ceramic pipe.

Valve for molten metal conduit

A furnace system particularly adapted for use with a continuous upcaster. Instead of employing discrete furnaces, tundishes, ladles and the like, the instant unitary system employs a furnace, a feeding mechanism for directly introducing material into the furnace and a plasma torch to melt the material. The rate of material entering the furnace is balanced by the quantity of product emerging from the upcaster.

Melt facility for continuous upcaster

The invention provides a method of manufacturing a thin metallic body composite structure. First, an inner layer of a first metal is cleaned to remove oxides and promote metallurgical bonding. The inner layer has a plurality of penetrating holes piercing the thickness of the inner layer. The penetrating holes are filled with metal powder of a second metal. Two outer layers of the second metal are placed on opposite sides of the cleaned and filled inner layer to form a sandwich structure. The sandwich structure is heated to a temperature at which recrystallization will occur in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The sandwich structure is then hot worked to reduce thickness of the sandwich structure forming the thin metallic body composite structure.

Process of forming a composite structure

A clad metal electrode having a core, a sleeve and a consolidated metal powder therebetween bonding the sleeve to the core. The clad metal electrode is particularly useful with an iron rod core and compressed nickel powder between the iron rod and the nickel sleeve. The resultant clad welding rod permits higher operating amperages during welding operations.

Clad metal electrode

A process for producing clad products that utilizes wrought or cast components eliminating the need for costly metal powders and a can to contain them. A sleeve circumscribes a core leaving a space therebetween. Powder is introduced into the space and is sealed therein. The resultant billet is extruded generating a clean metallurgical bond between the core and the sleeve. The space need not be evacuated prior to heating the billet. Resultant clad welding rod permits higher operating amperages.

Method for making a clad metal product

A process for producing a single crystal object made of a nickel-base, O.D.S., gamma prime stengthened alloy which involves fusion welding a seed crystal to a mass of such alloy in rcrystallizable state and thereafter zone annealing to grow a single crystal through the mass of alloy.

Process for producing single crystals

A method of producing a composite material from a mixture of copper and a low coefficient of thermal expansion nickel-iron alloy (Invar) powder is disclosed wherein advantageously at least part of the copper is deposited on the Invar powder prior to processing. Processing includes cold compacting to a green strip or other configuration, annealing in the temperature range of 550.degree.-750.degree. C. and working the annealed material at a temperature in that range to high density.

Manufacture of composite structures

The oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, e.g. 1800.degree. F. of iron-nickel-chromium alloys of specified composition is improved through the control of manganese content.

Process of using an iron-nickel-chromium alloy in an oxidation attacking

A process for heat treating certain nickel-chromium-iron alloys is disclosed which involves annealing the alloys over the temperature range of 1750.degree. F. to 2150.degree. F., preferably in a continuous annealing furnace, for short periods of time, such as 30 minutes to 2 hours, the time being sufficient to precipitate carbides at the alloy grain boundaries. The alloys are useful in nuclear reactor environments.

Nickel-base alloy heat treatment

A highly carburization resistant alloy characterized by good structural stability at elevated temperatures and other desired properties, the alloy containing correlated percentages of iron, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, carbon, titanium, etc.

Hiscor alloy

An apparatus (10) and method for consolidating and sintering a tube preform (12) previously fabricated by powder metallurgical techniques. A plurality of forming dies (22, 24) and movable mandrels (30, 32) cooperate to form tube consolidation zone (58,60). One-way tube gripping means (42) permit the tube (12) to progress through the apparatus (10) by the retraction of the mandrels (30, 32) while preventing the tube (12) from retreating back into the zone (58) when the mandrel (30, 32) is advanced. Heating coils (18A, 18B and 18C) heat the tube (12) to sinter it and cause it to expand clear of the mandrels (30, 32). The tube (12) is reduced in diameter and consolidated to greater than 90% theoretical density.

Apparatus and method for processing powder metallurgy tubing

A canless method for hot working a nickel-base gas atomized alloy powder. The powder is blended with nickel powder, consolidated and sintered to a sufficient green strength. The surface of the resultant form is sealed to create an oxygen impervious layer so as to prevent oxidation therein. The sealed surface, in a sense, acts as a can. The form is then reheated and hot worked.
