Novel catalysts are provided for the polymerization of olefins such as ethylene. The catalysts consist essentially of a chromium compound supported upon an inorganic carrier containing aluminum and phosphorus moieties, at least a portion of the chromium having a valence of less than 6. The inorganic carrier is an amorphous precipitate of aluminum phosphate or an amorphous precipitate containing aluminum and phosphorus moieties in an atomic ratio in the range of about 5:1 to 1:1. The catalysts are particularly useful for polymerizing ethylene in a Particle Form Process in that the catalyst has essentially no polymerization induction period and provides ethylene polymers having a desirably broad molecular weight distribution and a desirably high melt flow shear ratio.

A process for the hydrodesulfurization of feedstocks under comparatively low hydrogen partial pressures, i.e. less than about 1200 psig (8.27 MPa) in contact with a catalyst containing a hydrogenation component supported on a particular carrier. The carrier is a substantially silica-free alumina prepared by calcining a material comprising a dried alumina (i) containing from about 1.2 to about 2.6 moles of water of hydration per mole of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, (ii) having an (020) line width at 14.degree. (2 .theta.) at 3/4 maximum intensity of from about 2.0.degree. to about 5.0.degree., and (iii) having an intensity ratio relative to the intensity at 10.degree. (2 .theta.) of about 1.3 to about 5.0.

Hydrodesulfurization with a specific alumina-supported catalyst

Thermally stable composite precipitates containing aluminum phosphate and alumina and having a surface area of from about 100 to about 200 m.sup.2 /g together with an average pore radius of from 75 to 150 A are defined. These materials are prepared by neutralizing an aqueous solution of aluminum cations and PO.sub.4 anions at a controlled pH of between 7 and 10.0, and wherein the neutralizing medium is either ammonia or certain defined amine based materials such as ammonium hydroxide, ammonium carbonate or urea. There is a stoichiometric excess of aluminum to phosphorus over that required to form AlPO.sub.4. Due to their thermal stability these alumina-aluminum phosphates are particularly useful as catalyst supports for various reactions, including polymerization of ethylene.

The inorganic carrier is an amorphous precipitate of aluminum arsenate, or an amorphous coprecipitate containing aluminum and arsenate moieties in proportions such that the aluminum and arsenic are present in an atomic ratio in the range of 5:1 to 1:1. The catalysts are particularly useful for polymerizng ethylene in a Particle Form Process in that the catalysts have essentially no induction period and provide ethylene polymers having a desirably-broad molecular weight distribution and a desirably-high melt flow shear ratio.

A process for the liquefaction of coal in the presence of hydrogen and a solid supported catalyst containing a hydrogenation component and wherein the support comprises an amorphous aluminum phosphate.
