A method and a system to produce, either in numerical simulations or in experiments, specified amounts of first, second and higher order PMD in a controlled manner, in particular large amounts. Parameters can be adjusted to obtain specific ranges of first, second and higher order PMD, and importance sampling can be used to determine the probability that the resulting PMD events can be obtained in realistic situations. Individual results obtained using specific parameter values can be combined to produce even larger ranges of PMD.

Method and system for the controlled production of polarization mode dispersion

There is described an asymptotic theory for predicting the evolution of dispersion-managed solitons with loss and gain. Optimal launch points for dispersion-managed solitons where the pulses do not need to be prechirped can be readily located. Numerical results demonstrate that launching the pulses with proper phase chirp and power significantly reduces pulse amplitude and width oscillations and the amount of dispersive radiation, without regard to wavelength.

Optimizing launch points for dispersion-managed solitons

A highly stable soliton source uses a bulk Er/Yb glass laser which operates in two longitudinal modes of the laser cavity with substantially identical amplitudes to generate beat modulation. The beat modulation is then passed through a pulse compression fiber which compresses the beat modulation into a train of soliton pulses. Because the beat modulation is between two modes of the same laser cavity, the soliton pulse train generated is highly stable with low timing jitter.
