Electrolyte compositions comprising fluorinated acyclic carboxylic acid esters, fluorinated acyclic carbonates, and/or fluorinated acyclic ethers; co-solvents; and certain film-forming chemical compounds are described. The electrolyte compositions are useful in electrochemical cells, such as lithium ion batteries where they provide the improved performance of a combination of high capacity and high cycle life.

Nonaqueous electrolyte compositions

Electrolyte compositions containing a solvent mixture comprising 2,2,-difluoroethyl acetate and ethylene carbonate are described. The electrolyte compositions are useful in electrochemical cells, such as lithium ion batteries.

Novel fluorinated cyclic carbonate compounds are described. These compounds may be useful as non-aqueous electrolyte solvents, specialty solvents, and starting materials and intermediates for synthesis of dyes, agricultural chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

Novel multifunctional sulfone/fluorinated ester compounds are described. These compounds may be useful as non-aqueous electrolyte solvents, specialty solvents, and starting materials and intermediates for synthesis of dyes, agricultural chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

Multifunctional sulfone/fluorinated ester solvents

A pressure-relief valve assembly is improved in that sealing surfaces on both the valve seat and valve head are confrontationally disposed annular planar surfaces oriented substantially perpendicular to the valve axis. A resilient valve seal is formed of a material which deforms to a predetermined extent into sealing engagement against both sealing surfaces when compressed by the spring biasing force. When a vacuum exists the combination of the spring force and a holding force created by a pressure differential acts to increase the extent of compression between the resilient valve seal and both sealing surfaces sufficient to create a vacuum-tight seal. The magnitude of the spring biasing force in discrete increments may be adjusted by varying the degree of threaded engagement between members forming the valve housing.

Annealed carbon soot is useful as an electron field emitter. Field emitting cathodes made up of annealed carbon soot attached to the surface of a substrate are also provided. The field emitters and field emitter cathodes are useful in vacuum electronic devices, flat panel computer and television displays, emission gate amplifiers, klystrons and lighting devices.

Annealed carbon soot field emitters and field emitter cathodes made therefrom

Carbon cone and carbon whisker field emitters are disclosed. These field emitters find particular usefulness in field emitter cathodes and display panels utilizing said cathodes. The carbon cone and carbon whisker field emitters can be formed by ion beam bombardment (e.g., ion beam etching) of carbon materials (e.g., bulk carbon, carbon films or carbon fibers).
