In one embodiment, power level management in accordance with the present description, is provided in a storage unit having both a disk storage drive, and another non-volatile, non-disk memory or storage such as a solid state drive, for storing metadata. The metadata storage provides direct access to the metadata stored in the non-disk storage even though the disk storage drive may be in a low power mode in which the data storage media disk of the disk storage drive is stopped or spinning at a reduced rate of rotation. As a result, power consumption and cooling requirements associated with disk storage drives, may be reduced in a low power level mode of storage unit operation for input/output operations limited to metadata stored in the metadata storage. Other features and aspects may be realized, depending upon the particular application.

In an approach for notifying, a computer receives one or more preemption notifications, wherein the one or more preemption notifications are associated with one or more priority vehicles. The computer identifies a device that is within range of the received one or more preemption notifications, wherein the device includes one or more directional indicators. The computer one or more directions of approach associated with the received one or more preemption notifications relative to the identified device. The computer determines a number of approaching priority vehicles associated with each instance of the identified one or more directions of approach relative to the identified device. The computer initiates to display through the one or more directional indicators of the identified device the identified total number of approaching priority vehicles associated with the one or more identified directions of approach relative to the identified device.

In one embodiment, a computer-implemented method includes determining whether a medium in a drive is in motion, the drive being mounted in a receptacle. In response to determining that the medium is in motion, physical removal of the drive from the receptacle is prevented. In another embodiment, a computer program product for controlling removal of a drive includes a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith. The computer readable storage medium is not a transitory signal per se. The program instructions are readable and/or executable by a computer to cause the computer to perform the foregoing method.

Preventing physical removal of a drive with a medium in motion for mitigating damage events to components of the drive

A storage system, according to one embodiment, includes a receptacle, a controller, and a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is configured to prevent physical removal of a hard disk drive from the receptacle in response to a determination that a hard disk in the hard disk drive is in motion. The locking mechanism is configured to allow physical removal of the hard disk drive from the receptacle in response to a determination that the hard disk is not in motion. An apparatus, according to another embodiment, includes a drive having an integrated locking mechanism. The drive is configured to prevent physical removal of the drive from a receptacle in response to a determination that a medium in the drive is in motion, and allow physical removal of the drive from the receptacle in response to a determination that the medium in the drive is not in motion.

A solar panel enclosure converts sunlight to electricity. To remove the large amount of heat from the enclosure a chambered heat exchanger (CHE) is thermally coupled thereto. An air temperature differential is created between chamber air in a CHE portion and chamber air within a CHE heat exchanging portion. When a threshold thermal gradient is reached, air pressure that keeps the chamber air static is overcome creating airflow within the chamber. The airflow draws cooler ambient air from a chamber inlet. Heat from the enclosure is transferred to the cool air and is exhausted from a chamber outlet.

A portable electronic device is coupled to a body of a user to monitor biofeedback from the body of the user through a monitoring device disposed within the portable electronic device. Detection is made that that the monitored biofeedback satisfies an alert condition. An operation is initiated to cause a wireless transmission of an emergency communication to an emergency station in response to detecting that the monitored biofeedback satisfies the alert condition.
