At least some embodiments of the present disclosure feature systems and methods for assessing the impact of visual features within a region of a scene. With the input of a visual representation of a scene and at least one selected region within the scene, the system applies a visual attention model to the visual representation to determine visual conspicuity of the at least one selected region. The system computes feature-related data associated with a plurality of features of the at least one selected region. Based on the visual conspicuity and the feature-related data, the system assesses an impact that at least one of the features within the at least one selected region have on the visual conspicuity.

Systems and methods for computing and presenting results of visual attention modeling

An antireflection film and method of making same includes a substrate having a first surface and a second surface, an inorganic layer deposited on the first surface of the substrate, and an optically active polymer layer formed by curing a curable composition in situ on the inorganic layer, the polymer layer having a refractive index not greater than about 1.53 over the wavelength range of 400 nm to 700 nm and a thickness of from about 20 nm to about 200 nm, and an adhesive layer deposited on the second surface of the substrate.

Removable antireflection film

Substantially transparent electrodes are formed upon a substrate by forming on the substrate, in order, a high index layer, a metallic conductive layer, and a conductive or semi-conductive top layer; and patterning the top layer and the conductive layer, preferably by laser ablation, to form a plurality of discrete electrodes from the metallic conductive layer. Conductors can be attached directly to the top layer, without requiring removal of this layer to expose the metallic conductive layer. The high index layer, conductive layer and top layer can all be formed by sputtering or similar processes which do not require high temperatures, so that plastic substrates can be used. The electrodes can be used, for example, in flat panel displays and in touch screen displays.

Process for forming electrodes

An optical stack includes an intrinsic polarizer, such as a K-type or thin KE polarizer sheet. Optically functional coatings are disposed on one or both of the surfaces of the intrinsic polarizer. The optically functional coatings include a hardcoat, a transflector coating, a reflector coating, an antireflection film, a liquid crystal polymer retarder coating, a diffusion coating, an antiglare film, a wide view film, and an electrode. An optical stack including an intrinsic polarizer and an optically functional coating may have a thickness of less than 25 microns.

Polarizers coated with optically functional layers

An antireflection coating comprises one or more inorganic antireflection layers (typically metal oxide or silica layers) and a polymer layer cured in situ, the polymer layer having a refractive index not greater than about 1.53 over the wavelength range of 400 to 700 nm and a thickness of from about 20 to about 200 nm. The polymer layer provides good scratch and fingerprint protection, and also enables the thicknesses of the inorganic antireflection layers to be reduced, thereby reducing the cost of the coating.

Antireflection film

An article includes an antireflection composite material, a substrate, and an inorganic layer deposited onto the substrate. The inorganic layer has a thickness of from about 1 nm to about 10 nm. The article includes a polymer layer in contact with the inorganic layer to form an outer surface of the antireflection composite material. The polymer layer has a thickness of from about 70 nm to about 120 nm.

A liquid crystal display structure includes a liquid crystal display cell having a front surface and a back surface. One or more intrinsic polarizers lacking protective coatings thereon, such as K-type polarizers and thin KE polarizer sheets, are disposed adjacent to the front and back surfaces of the liquid crystal display cell. Alternatively, thinly cladded or encased iodine polarizers are disposed adjacent to the front and back surfaces of the liquid crystal display cell. The liquid crystal display structure may be used in conjunction with other optical display elements to enhance the brightness and contrast of the liquid crystal display.

Polarizers for use with liquid crystal displays

An antireflection film comprises a transparent substrate carrying on one surface a polymeric antireflection layer, this antireflection layer having a refractive index at least about 0.02 lower than that of the substrate and being formed from a cured polymer comprising repeating units derived from a fluoroalkene, an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and a polyfunctional acrylate monomer. No inorganic antireflection layer is present between the substrate and the polymeric antireflection layer.

A scanner is operative with an imaging system for inducing a mechanical movement of a subject during an optical scanning of the subject to provide an image of the subject. The subject which is in the shape of a card is advanced along a travel path past an optical viewing site by means of a drum, the scanner including a first roller and a second roller which urge the subject against the drum. Initially, the first roller is located between the viewing site and the entry port for receipt of the subject in a first nip between the first roller and the drum. The second roller is positioned fixed on the opposite side of the viewing site. The first roller is supported by an arm which swings about a rotational axis of the drum to vary the spacing between the two rollers. Upon rotation of the drum in a forward direction for induction of the subject, a brake located between the drum and the arm drags the arm and the first roller towards the second roller to facilitate a transference of a leading edge of the subject from the first nip to a second nip defined by the second roller and the drum. Preparatory to optical scanning of the subject which is accomplished during reverse rotation of the drum, the arm swings the first roller away from the second roller to present the viewing site to the optical scanning beam.

Scanner with retractable roller feed

An imaging system for producing multicolor images of a scanned subject includes a plurality of detector assemblies. Each of the detector assemblies is sensitive to a specific color. Typically, red, green, and blue detector assemblies are employed for converting images in the primary colors to the desired output image. Each detector assembly includes multiple rows of CCD detector elements positioned in registration with each other for a two-dimensional array of the detectors. Pixels of the subject are viewed repetitively by the successive detectors of the column to provide for an integrated detector signal. The number of detector elements in each column is varied in accordance with the color sensed by each assembly to provide for greater integration of low-intensity portions of the spectrum. This compensates the output image for variations in filter attenuation, lamp illumination, and CCD sensitivity as a function of light wavelength. The mode of compensation preserves a high signal-to-noise ratio.

Color balanced image detector system

A system and method for calibrating signals provided by individual cells in a photodetector array scanned by light originating at a low-cost variable light source and reflected from a subject to be replicated in digital form by processing photodetector cell signals in a manner so that individual cell signals are corrected to compensate for fluctuations in source light. The system and method is particularly applicable to a color balanced photodetector array in which individual photodetectors are arranged in sets with each set having a variable number of rows oriented in a direction transverse to the direction of scan and columns parallel to the direction of scan. The invention is practiced by exposing the first few photodetectors in each row to the full spectrum of visible light reflected from a white reference patch. During processing, as the photodetector signals are sequentially transferred, to a processor, the signals provided by the cells exposed to the white reference are compared with a fixed value to obtain a calibration factor. As the signals develop by cells in the same set but as a result of exposure to light reflected from the subject image, those signals are multiplied by the calibration factor so that the process signals are corrected for variations in source light on a real time basis.

Calibration system and method for color image scanning

A laser scanning and printing apparatus operates to scan an original picture in generally low resolution to provide a minimal quantity of image data which may be modified to provide an enhanced image reproduction of the original by subsequently laser scanning the original and directing the laser light reflected from the original to expose a photosensitive material, the intensity of the laser light being modulated to effect the enhanced image reproduction by selectively lightening or darkening predetermined areas of the photosensitive material exposed by the laser light reflected from the original picture during the subsequent line scan thereof.
