The present invention provides a method for beneficial control of body condition and dietary energy balance in dairy cattle during colostrum milk production. An important aspect of the beneficial control is the provision of a feedstock which has a supplemented content of trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid derivative having rumen-bypass properties. The ingested quantity of CLA derivative ingredient per cow is effective for lowering and maintaining the fat content of colostrum milk in the range between about 4-6 weight percent and for increasing milk yield. The presence of cis-9, trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid structural isomer in an invention feedstock is minimized, because it counteracts the beneficial effects of the trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid structural isomer, such as reduction in milk yield.

Beneficial control of energy balance in periparturient cattle

This invention provides a feedstock for ruminants which beneficially improves feed efficiency and body growth. The feedstock also is adapted to improve the lactational performance of dairy cattle. The recovered milk product has a milk fat profile with an increased proportion of unsaturated fatty acid constituents. The enhanced benefits exhibited by an invention feedstock are derived from essential ingredients such as unsaturated fatty acid derivative having rumen-bypass properties, and an effective additive quantity of cyclic polyether ionophorous antibiotic.

Unsaturated lipid-enriched feedstock for ruminants

This invention provides a feedstock for controlling hypocalcemia in prepartum dairy cattle. An essential feature of the feedstock is a dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) with a value between about &minus;5 and &plus;20 meq/100 g dietary DM. Other essential features are a weight ratio of potassium:magnesium between about 3-5:1, and between about 1-12 g/kg dietary DM of omega-6 fatty acid derivative having rumen-bypass properties.

This invention provides a feedstock for improving the lactational performance of dairy cows. An essential feature of the feedstock is a dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) with a value between about 20-60 meq/100 g dietary DM. Other essential features of the feedstock are an atomic ratio of potassium:sodium between about 1-5:1, and a weight ratio of potassium:magnesium between about 3-5:1.

Other essential features of a preferred feedstock are an atomic ratio of potassium:sodium between about 1-5:1, a weight ratio of potassium:magnesium between about 3-5:1, and DCAD sodium-containing and potassium-containing macrominerals are selected from bicarbonate, carbonate and sesquicarbonate type compounds.
