Various embodiments described herein relate to a virtual network with a cloud-based server, cloud-based firewall and a cloud-based service. The cloud-based server is in communication with a client installed on a gateway to receive an encapsulated IP data packet from one or more applications installed on the gateway. The cloud-based configured to decapsulate the encapsulated IP data packet verify a security certificate based on a first information and configure a cloud-based firewall based on a second information. The cloud-based server is configured to route the one or more IP data packets to the cloud-based firewall for processing each IP data packet based on the second information. In response to the one or more IP data packets being compliant with the first information provided to authenticate the gateway and the second information provided to configure the cloud-based firewall, routing the one or more IP data packets to the cloud-based service.

A turbocharger includes a turbine housing that defines a flow passage for a fluid. The turbine housing includes a turbine shroud member. The turbocharger also includes a turbine wheel supported for rotation within the turbine housing relative to the turbine shroud member. The turbine wheel is configured to rotate as the fluid flows through the flow passage. Moreover, the turbocharger includes a port extending through the turbine shroud member. The port is configured to receive a portion of the fluid flowing through the flow passage.

A centrifugal compressor for a turbocharger includes an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between a closed position, an open position, and a super-open position. The compressor also includes a ported shroud system. The inlet-adjustment mechanism includes a plurality of blades disposed about the air inlet and movable radially inwardly and outwardly for defining the various positions. In the closed position, the effective diameter of air inlet is reduced and the blades block flow through the ported shroud system. In the open position, the blades still block the ported shroud but the effective inlet diameter is increased relative to the closed position. In the super-open position, the blades unblock the ported shroud so that an additional amount of flow can pass through the ported shroud, thereby shifting the compressor's choke flow line to higher flow rates.

A turbine wheel for a turbocharger is provided. The turbine wheel includes a plurality of blades and a mid-plane is defined between a pressure side and a suction side of adjacent blades. Each of the blades has a leading edge, and is coupled to the wheel hub along a respective blade hub camber line. The wall has a first radii at the leading edge that extends for a first circumferential distance adjacent to the suction side. The first circumferential distance is at least 12% of a circumferential distance that extends between adjacent blades. The wheel hub includes a plurality of scallops defined through the wall. Each of the scallops is asymmetrical about the mid-plane. For each of the scallops, the wall has a second minimum radii defined offset from the mid-plane toward the suction side and a third minimum radii defined offset from the mid-plane toward the pressure side.

A centrifugal compressor for a turbocharger includes a passive inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between an open position and a closed position solely by aerodynamic forces on the mechanism. The inlet-adjustment mechanism includes a plurality of flexible vanes collectively forming a duct, and an effective diameter of the air inlet at the inducer portion of the compressor wheel is determined by a trailing edge inside diameter of the duct. The vanes are movable solely by aerodynamic forces exerted on the vanes by the air flowing to the compressor wheel. The duct has a tapering configuration when the vanes are in a relaxed state, but under aerodynamic force the vanes flex outwardly and increase the trailing edge inside diameter of the duct, thereby increasing an effective diameter of the air inlet.

A method for controlling an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for a compressor so as to switch the mechanism in a binary fashion between two positions Pand Pfor adjusting a flow area of the inlet. The method includes identifying a threshold line on a compressor map of pressure ratio versus corrected flow rate for the compressor. The threshold line is a line on which the pressure ratio and flow rate of the compressor are the same for the Pand Ppositions of the inlet-adjustment mechanism at equal speeds. When the operating point of the compressor on the compressor map crosses the threshold line, the inlet-adjustment mechanism is switched from one of its binary positions to the other.

In the closed position, the ring abuts the tapering surface to close off the annular passage, whereby the effective inlet diameter is then defined by the inner diameter of the ring at its trailing edge. Movement of the inlet-adjustment mechanism from the open position to the closed position is effective to shift the compressor's surge line to lower flow rates.

A ported-shroud centrifugal compressor for a turbocharger includes an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between an open position and a closed position in the air inlet. The inlet-adjustment mechanism includes an axially elongated ring. In the open position, the radially outer surface of the ring is spaced from a tapering inner surface of the air inlet so that air can flow in an annular passage between the tapering surface and the ring, and the ring opens the ported shroud. In the closed position, the ring abuts the tapering surface to close off the annular passage and to close off the ported shroud. Movement of the inlet-adjustment mechanism from the open position to the closed position is effective to shift the compressor's surge line to lower flow rates.

A centrifugal compressor for a turbocharger includes an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between an open position and a closed position in the air inlet. The inlet-adjustment mechanism includes a variable-geometry orifice actuated by a rotatable actuator ring. In the closed position, the orifice's inner diameter is smaller than that of a shroud surface of the compressor housing and therefore dictates the effective inlet diameter for the compressor. In the open position the orifice no longer forms an inner diameter smaller than the shroud surface, so that the effective inlet diameter is determined by the shroud surface.

A flow-control assembly may include a fluid conduit and a flow-control valve in the fluid conduit. The flow-control assembly may further include a fluid expansion conduit with an inlet defined at least in part by the fluid conduit and configured to selectively receive flow of a fluid from the fluid conduit. The fluid expansion conduit may further include an outlet in fluid communication with the fluid conduit downstream of the flow-control valve. A rotating fluid expander in the fluid expansion conduit may be configured to expand the fluid and thereby rotate and in some embodiments generate electricity. In a first position flow is substantially blocked. In a second position flow is allowed through the fluid expansion conduit. In a third position flow through the fluid conduit is allowed without necessarily passing through the fluid expansion conduit. Related systems and methods are also provided.

Flow-control assembly with a rotating fluid expander

A turbomachinery device operable in either a compressor mode or a turbine mode. The device includes an impeller that rotates in the same direction in both modes, and the general flow direction remains the same in both modes. An inlet flow-guiding device may be included to direct fluid into the impeller. The impeller is coupled to a motor/generator, which operates as a motor to add power to the impeller in the compressor mode, and as a generator in the turbine mode to extract mechanical power from the impeller and convert it into electrical power. An outlet flow-guiding device may also be included. The inlet and outlet flow-guiding devices can be inlet and outlet guide vanes that are variable in setting angle or are extendable and retractable into and out of the flow path, or can be other types of flow-guiding devices.
