A multi-stage aqueous emulsion polymer, an aqueous coating composition including the emulsion polymer, and a method for providing a coating including the emulsion polymer are provided. The multistage emulsion polymer includes from 10% to 30% by wt., based on the wt. of the multistage emulsion polymer, of a first polymer shell having an acid number of from 5 to 100, the first polymer having a calculated Mn of from 1000 to 4500 and a calculated Tg of lower then 100&#xb0; C.; and from 70% to 90% by wt., based on the wt. of the multistage emulsion polymer, of a second polymer core having an acid number of from 0 to one-half the acid number of the first polymer, the second polymer having a calculated Mn of greater than 20,000.

Multistage emulsion polymer and coatings formed therefrom

The present invention provides compositions that enable excellent hardness in coating applications, the compositions containing one or more copolymer having as copolymerized units one or more acrylic monomer with a phosphorus acid-functional group, a polymeric side chain containing multi-acid functional groups, a salt thereof, or a combination thereof, one or more polyurethane dispersion made from a high molecular weight polyol, and one or more coalescent having a normal boiling point of 190&#xb0; C. or higher. The compositions may be ambient curable.

Low VOC aqueous compositions of phosphorus acid functional polymers and polyurethanes

An aqueous copolymer composition containing copolymer particles containing polymerized units of (meth)acrylonitrile, (meth)acrylamide, or combinations thereof; and at least one unsaturated fatty acid ester is provided. A method is provided for preparing a coating from the aqueous copolymer composition. The aqueous copolymer composition is useful for preparing crosslinked coatings, suitable in coating applications such as architectural or maintenance paints.

Aqueous copolymer composition and method for preparing a coating therefrom

An aqueous composite particle composition containing composite particles and polyvalent metal ion is provided. The composite particles contain pigment particle with adsorbed polymer particles. The polymer particles contain pendant acid functional groups and has a molecular weight in a select range. Also provided are methods of preparing the aqueous composite particle composition. The aqueous composite particle composition is useful for preparing coating with high gloss and improved solvent resistance.

A polymer composition is provided including copolymer particles bearing phosphorus acid groups dispersed in an aqueous medium, wherein the polymer composition is substantially-free of water soluble phosphorus acid compounds. Also provided is a monomer composition containing at least one phosphorus acid monomer and a method of preparing the polymer composition from the monomer composition. The monomer composition is substantially-free of inorganic phosphorus acid compounds. A method is provided for applying the polymer composition to a substrate. The polymer composition is useful as a coating composition to prepare coatings for metal substrates, which have improved solvent resistance.

The present invention relates to the preparation of aqueous based polymers bearing reactive functional groups. More particularly, this invention relates to waterborne or water dispersed polymers that are equivalent in performance in applications formerly dominated by solvent based polymers. Polymers of the present invention have many uses including adhesives, saturant applications, solutions or dispersions in water or water-cosolvent mixtures, and are most useful as coatings and sealants for wood, glass, metal, concrete and binders for mortars and non-wovens. More specifically, surface coatings produced from polymers of the present invention exhibit improved properties such as: for example, durability, toughness, solvent resistance, dirt pickup resistance, print and block resistance and mar resistance.
