A method for actively controlling fuel flow from a fuel pump to a mixer assembly of a gas turbine engine combustor, where the mixer assembly includes a pilot mixer and a main mixer. The pilot mixer further includes an annular pilot housing having a hollow interior, a primary fuel injector mounted in the pilot housing and adapted for dispensing droplets of fuel to the hollow interior of the pilot housing, a plurality of axial swirlers positioned upstream from the primary fuel injector. The fuel flow control apparatus further includes: at least one sensor for detecting dynamic pressure in the combustor; a fuel nozzle; and, a system for controlling fuel flow supplied by the fuel nozzle through the valves. The fuel nozzle includes: a feed strip with a plurality of circuits for providing fuel to the pilot mixer and the main mixer; and, a plurality of valves associated with the fuel nozzle and in flow communication with the feed strip thereof. The control system activates the valves in accordance with signals received from the pressure sensor.

Method and apparatus for actively controlling fuel flow to a mixer assembly of a gas turbine engine combustor

An apparatus for actively controlling fuel flow from a fuel pump to a mixer assembly of a gas turbine engine combustor, where the mixer assembly includes a pilot mixer and a main mixer. The pilot mixer further includes an annular pilot housing having a hollow interior, a primary fuel injector mounted in the pilot housing and adapted for dispensing droplets of fuel to the hollow interior of the pilot housing, a plurality of axial swirlers positioned upstream from the primary fuel injector. The fuel flow control apparatus further includes: at least one sensor for detecting dynamic pressure in the combustor; a fuel nozzle; and, a system for controlling fuel flow supplied by the fuel nozzle through the valves. A gas turbine engine combustion system includes a plurality of fuel injectors circumferentially disposed around a combustor in a one to one fuel supply relationship with a plurality of fuel nozzle valves, and an electronic controller for controlling the fuel nozzle valves to eliminate and/or reduce hot streaking in response to sensed hot streak conditions. The fuel nozzle valves may be modulating valves. The electronic controller may be used to individually control the fuel nozzle valves. The hot streak conditions may be sensed with temperature sensors such as temperature sensors operably mounted in the combustor. A program in the electronic controller may be used for determining broken or malfunctioning sensors by calculating a combustor temperature and comparing it to measured temperatures from the sensors and comparing the measured fuel pressures in the individual fuel nozzle circuits with the simulated or calculated fuel pressures.

Gas turbine engine combustor hot streak control

A multi-staged gas turbine engine fuel supply fuel injector includes at least first and second staged fuel injection circuits having first and second fuel injection points. At least first and second fuel nozzle valves operable to open at different first and second crack open pressures are controllably connected to the first and second staged fuel injection circuits, respectively. A single fuel supply manifold is connected to all of the fuel nozzle valves. A single fuel signal manifold is controllably connected to all of the first and second fuel nozzle valves. The fuel injector includes a valve housing containing the fuel nozzle valves.

Controlled pressure fuel nozzle injector

A method and system for monitoring the condition of a bearing mounted on a rotating shaft, particularly one present in an aircraft gas turbine engine, where the vibration sensor that monitors the bearing is remote therefrom but proximate to the rotating shaft. The vibration sensor obtains a broadband signal having frequencies that include the bearing defect peak of the monitored bearing. The broadband signal is analyzed to identify the presence of the bearing defect peak. If the bearing defect peak is present, the amplitude of this peak is quantified to determine whether degradation of the monitored bearing has at least reached a threshold criteria previously established.

Method and system for monitoring bearings

A method for controlling an aircraft engine using a control system enables an engine to be operated at low power while hail is ingested. The control system includes a processor coupled to the aircraft engine. The method comprises receiving a plurality of sensed inputs from the aircraft engine, receiving current engine environmental operating conditions, determining a reference value for a controlled variable from a fuel flow schedule, generating a fuel-air-ratio for the reference value based on current engine environmental operating conditions, and enriching combustor fuel staging in response to the fuel-air-ratio.

Methods and apparatus for operating gas turbine engines

An exemplary embodiment of the invention is directed to a fuel flow control system for use with a fuel distribution system having a plurality of zones each including a servovalve. The fuel flow control system includes a fluidic multiplexer having a plurality of pressure ports and a plurality of servoflow ports. The fluidic multiplexer sequentially receives pressure from each zone and sequentially provides servo fluid to each servovalve. A pressure sensor is fluidly coupled to the pressure ports and generates a pressure signal for each zone. A controller receives the pressure signal and generates a control signal. A driver receives the control signal and increases or decreases flow through the servoflow ports in response to the control signal.

Fuel flow control system

A control circuit adapted to receive at least first, second and third input signals. The first input signal is a signal representative of the fuel pressure at the output of a pump. The second signal is a signal representative of the fuel pressure in the manifold of fuel disbursement means which is supplied through a controllable valve, by the fuel pump. The third signal is a signal representative of the pressure at the inlet to the pump. The control circuit further includes a feedback path for continuously circulating fuel from the manifold to the pump inlet. In one arrangement of the fuel supply system, there is an aperture in parallel with the controllable valve and an aperture in the feedback path.

Fuel circulation control method

An improved augmentor fuel supply system including a fuel source, a pump for pressurizing the fuel, a flow control means for controlling the flow and pressure of fuel to a fuel disbursement means (e.g., an augmentor) and a return path for recirculating unburned fuel. The flow control means includes a restrictor means such as a small orifice in parallel with a controllable valve. The restrictor means allows fuel to flow to the fuel disbursement means when the controllable valve is shut off. Further, according to the present invention, a second restrictor means, such as a small orifice is included in the return path. Finally, a check valve is included in the return path to ensure that fuel does not flow into the augmentor through the return path.
