An actuator assembly and method for orienting a head over a disc within a multi-disc servo-track writer incorporates an actuator block, rotational air bearing, translational air bearing, adaptor plate, E-block and actuator arm/head assembly. Rotation of the E-block, and hence actuator arm/head assembly, is directly controlled by the movement of the rotational air bearing, which is rotated by a motor. The air bearing provides for reduced friction and, as a result, decreased eccentricity of the head as compared to related art configurations. A translational air bearing laterally positions the actuator assembly within the multi-disc servo-track writer for servo-track recording.

Apparatus and method for orienting a head over a disc within a multi-disc servo-track writer preferably uses two gas bearings, an adaptor plate, and an actuator assembly including an E-block and arm/head assembly. Rotation of the E-block, and hence actuator arm/head assembly, can be controlled by the movement of a rotational gas bearing, which is rotated by a motor. The gas bearing provides for reduced friction and, as a result, decreased eccentricity of the head as compared to related art configurations. A translational gas bearing can be used for laterally positioning the actuator assembly for servo track recording.

Multi-disc servo track writer vibration isolation method and apparatus

An actuator assembly including one or more actuator arms, wherein each of the actuator arms defines a clasp hole and a clamp-opening hole and a slot running between the clasp hole and clamp-opening hole, and optionally, a second slot running from the clasp hole to a distal end of the actuator arm, thereby creating two clasp fingers. A flex suspension assembly is included with a protrusion, such as a boss and a head on a distal end. The flex suspension assembly is coupled to the actuator arm by resiliently increasing the diameter of the clasp hole so as to allow the boss on the flex suspension assembly to be inserted into the clasp hole. With the boss is inserted, the clasp hole is allowed to revert to its original diameter, thereby clamping the boss in the clasp hole. A method for assembly is also provided.

Apparatus and method for coupling a flex suspension assembly to an actuator assembly

An apparatus and method for writing servo data to a rotatable disc of a disc drive, the servo data used to control the position of a read/write head adjacent the disc. An internally mounted clock head assembly provides disc angular position information by writing and subsequently reading a clock pattern to and from the disc. A radial position detection assembly identifies the radial position of the head. A control circuit controls the function and position of the head to write the servo data to the disc in response to the disc angular and head radial position information. The clock head assembly and radial position detection assembly remain contained within the disc drive during subsequent field use, and can be configured to detect the application of rotational vibration to the disc drive and to rewrite the servo data.

Disc drive with self-contained servo data writing capability

An apparatus is described which reduces flow-induced disturbances of the head. A disc drive assembly is provided which includes a basedeck and top cover. A spindle motor mounted to the basedeck which rotates around a central axis; at least one magnetic storage disc mounted to the spindle motor for rotation around the central axis and an actuator arm assembly. The actuator arm assembly includes an actuator arm rotatably attached to a pivot axis and a suspension arm attached to a distal end of the actuator arm. A magnetic transducing head is attached to the suspension. The head is used to read and write data to the magnetic storage disc. Finally, a leading surface portion of the actuator arm utilizes several turbulence-reducing portions laterally recessed so as to guide an airflow to reduce a flow-induced disturbance acting on the transducing head.
