A device is used to sever an electrical power cable for the transmission of high voltage. The device includes a frame having first movable cutting blade carried thereon and second stationary cutting blades carried thereon. The blades can sever the electrical power cable upon movement of the first cutting blade relative to the frame. A sensor is provided and is configured to register a position of the first cutting blade relative to the frame. An evaluation and/or transmission controller is configured to receive information from the sensor and interrupt severing of the electrical power cable by the blades in response to the information.

An electric field detector includes field detection circuitry configured to detect voltage in an electric field in an environment and configured to determine if the voltage meets or exceeds a voltage threshold. A warning module operably connected with the field detection circuitry is configured to provide a warning to operators in the environment. A communication module operably connected with the field detection circuitry communicates a warning notification to another electric field detector.

System and method for voltage detection and communication between electric field detectors

A system and method used to detect voltage by an electric field detector on equipment is provided. The equipment includes a component which is configured to come into direct contact with, or come into proximity of, a conductor of electricity, and a control system which is in operative communication with the component. An electric field detector is provided on the equipment. The detector includes field detection circuitry configured to detect a voltage in an electric field in the environment which meets or exceeds a voltage threshold. When an overvoltage is detected by the electric field detector, the control system of the equipment is configured to act by performing one of 1) activating a warning module on the equipment and 2) causing the component of the equipment to act.

System and method for voltage detection for equipment

A wearable electric field detector configured to be worn by a wearer in an environment includes inner and outer housings which are movable relative to each other between a closed position and an open position. When in the closed position, a body of the inner housing is concealed within the outer housing, and when in the open position, the body is partially visible to visually indicate that the detector is open. The detector includes field detection circuitry which is configured to detect voltage in an electric field in the environment around the wearer. The circuitry is in communication with at least one of a speaker and a light source which are configured to be activated by the field detection circuitry.

A high voltage digital voltmeter and wireless phaser includes first and second voltmeters/phasers. Each voltmeter/phaser has a probe for accessing a point in a circuit, circuitry connected to the probe and including a microprocessor, and a ground reference associated with the circuitry. Each microprocessor is programmed to measure line-to-ground voltage of the respective voltmeter/phaser. This information is shared between the microprocessors and is used to determine voltage measurements and phase angle difference.

A mechanism for providing monitoring of electric field detectors. In accordance with instructions on a machine-readable medium, a computing system receives from a device data corresponding to a user identifier. Further, the computing device identifies from a plurality of electric field detectors one or more electric field detectors associated with the user identifier and identifies status data for each of the identified one or more electric field detectors. The status data for each electric field detector in the plurality of electric field detectors comprises data indicative of at least (i) a location of the electric field detector and (ii) an alarm state of the electric field detector. Additionally, the computing system causes a display component of the device to display a graphical user interface that presents indicia of the status data for each of the identified one or more electric field detectors.

Digital ammeter

An ammeter is provided with a plurality of individual wound coils interconnected in a generally U-shaped array to measure the magnitude of current in a conductor extending through a sensing region inside the U-shape. Additional pairs of position-sensing coils determine the position of the conductor relative to the sensing region and provide outputs to circuitry which permits the magnitude measurement to be displayed only if the conductor extends through the sensing region.

A voltmeter/phaser includes dual hot-stick probes, each carrying a housing including a digital display, one of the housings also having a measurement circuit for measuring the sensed voltage. A plural-conductor cable interconnects the housings and carries, in two separate conductors, current between the probes and display data between the display circuits, so that identical voltage values are always displayed on the two displays.

A digital voltage indicator includes a probe having a first electrode including a hollow portion and a probe tip projecting from the hollow portion, a second electrode extending into the hollow portion and spaced therefrom, and dielectric material disposed between the second electrode and the hollow portion. The indicator may include a reference conductor connected to the second electrode and detection circuitry connected between the probe and the reference conductor for detecting a voltage difference therebetween, and an annunciator connected to the detection circuitry for displaying the measured voltage.

High-voltage indicating apparatus and method

A wearable electric field detector has a housing mountable on a user's person and including a sensing circuit responsive to an electric field to generate a signal which varies in proportion to the strength of the sensed field, and an alarm circuit coupled to the sensing circuit for producing an intermittent audible alarm signal, which has a repetition rate varying in proportion to the strength of the field, and a visible alarm signal. A mute circuit is manually activatable for selectively muting the audible alarm and then automatically reenabling it after a predetermined time period. The detector includes a manually-actuatable test circuit. There is no on-off switch, the detector being disabled by being disposed in a shielded carrying case.

A device for testing a conductor for the presence of high AC voltage includes a voltage detection circuit connected to a probe assembly, preferably designed for insertion in the access bushing of an underground electrical transmission or distribution equipment. The probe assembly includes an elongated tubular insulating housing with a conductive probe at one end and a threaded connector at the other end for connection to the detection circuit. A high resistance, preferably several megohms, is connected in series between the tip and the connector and is preferably comprised of a plurality of series-connected resistors encased in a heat shrink tubing.

A tester for power transformers and capacitors includes a pulse generator for applying a pulsating test signal to a pair of test leads which may be connected across the terminals of the device to be tested. Also connected across the test leads are a capacitor detector, an inductor detector and a continuity detector. If the connections to the transformer or capacitor in the device to be tested are good, the capacitor detector and inductor detector will distinguish one from the other and indicate that its condition is good. If the connections to the device are not good, the continuity detector will indicate whether there is a short circuit or open circuit condition. The detectors are coupled through control logic circuitry to an indicator circuit including a horn and blinking lights for providing unique indications of capacitor okay, inductor okay, short and open conditions. The capacitor detector provides a discharge path for a capacitor and detects the discharge current flow. The inductor detector responds to the kickback voltage of an inductor, which is of a polarity opposite to that of the input test pulse. The continuity detector measures voltage level to distinguish between impedance levels respectively corresponding to substantially open and substantially short circuit conditions.

Tester for power transformers and capacitors

A lightning arrester tester includes two tubular poles respectively carrying probe terminals, one probe terminal being connected in series through a high-voltage rectifier and high-resistance circuit disposed within the pole to one terminal of a DC microammeter mounted on the outside of the one pole, the other probe terminal being connected through a high-resistance circuit housed within the second pole to the other meter terminal. A diode is connected in parallel with the meter to protect the meter from high leakage currents. In use, the probe terminals are respectively connected to a high-voltage power transmission or distribution line and one terminal of an arrester, the other terminal of which is grounded or, alternatively, to ground and to one terminal of an arrester, the other terminal of which is connected to a high-voltage power transmission or distribution line. The meter displays DC leakage current through the arrester.
