An Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network uses the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) to provide communication services to mobile nodes. A short message service gateway (SMS-GW) in the IMS network receives a request to deliver a message to a mobile node. The SMS-GW determines whether the mobile node is IMS registered. If the mobile node is IMS registered, the SMS-GW may transmit a SIP MESSAGE request to a call session control function (CSCF) serving the mobile node in order to deliver the message to the mobile node. If the mobile node is SIP-capable but is not IMS registered, the SMS-GW may instead transmit a SIP MESSAGE request to the mobile node's IP address. To obtain the mobile node's IP address, the SMS-GW may query a domain name server (DNS) that stores associations between hostnames and IP addresses of mobile nodes.

Method and system for delivering short message service (SMS) messages using the session initiation protocol (SIP)

A method, system, and medium are provided for causing a first multimedia messaging service center (MMSC) on a home network to communicate a multimedia messaging service (MMS) message to a second MMSC on a foreign network, the MMS message being modified to conform to multimedia-messaging parameters of a recipient mobile device. A query is issued by the first MMSC to the second MMSC to obtain one or more multimedia-messaging parameters of the recipient mobile device. The parameters include characteristics of the recipient mobile device and subscription details as well as parameters set by the foreign network. The first MMSC modifies the MMS message to conform to the parameters and communicates the modified MMS message to the second MMSC. The second MMSC delivers the MMS message to the recipient or provides a failed-delivery notification to the first MMSC. A reason for the failed delivery might also be indicated.

Inter-carrier communications for multimedia-message delivery

Ways of presenting a custom greeting to a user who retrieves a voicemail that was left by a caller are disclosed. In one embodiment, a voicemail server facilitates storing a voicemail in connection with an identifier that is associated with a calling device that was used by a caller in an attempt to call the user. A user-specific name is automatically retrieved based on the identifier. This name can be retrieved from the user's mobile device or from a remote address book. When the user retrieves his or her messages, the voicemail server presents a custom announcement introducing the message, where the custom announcement is based on the name retrieved.

Providing a customized voicemail-retrieval announcement

A method, system, and medium are provided for changing the size of media content sent to a mobile device during a media session. In one embodiment, during the media session, the mobile device requests media content that has a second size. In response to the request, the content provider transmits the media content having the second size and discontinues transmission of the media content having the first size. The size of the media content transmitted to the mobile device may be changed multiple times during the presentation of the media content.

Disclosed herein is a mechanism for dynamically varying the process of selecting cell sites to broadcast an alert message. The mechanism involves using the type or other characteristic of the alert message as a basis to choose a particular cell-site selection process or level of precision for defining cell site coverage. For example, given one type of alert message, a particular cell-site selection process and/or level of precision may be used to determine the cell sites in the target area, and given another type of alert message, a different cell-site selection process and/or level of precision may be used to determine the cell sites in the target area.

A wireless communications device dynamically determines a number of wireless network parameters prior to data transfer to increase network efficiency and decrease delays during the transmission of a multimedia messaging service message. Before sending a multimedia messaging service message, a number of wireless network parameters are dynamically determined by the wireless communications device. Based upon these determined wireless network parameters, the wireless communications device determines an optimal file transmission size. The multimedia messaging service message may then be divided into one or more file chunks having a file size equal to the optimal file transmission size by the wireless communications device. The file chunks are transmitted by the wireless communication device to another wireless user.

Computer readable media and methods are provided for initiating a failover state in a network element. A failover is when the element's traffic is routed to a redundant element which takes over the functions of the element, and any session state information stored in the element is also transferred to the redundant element. If a failover occurs with an upstream element, a downstream element is not aware of the failover and does not transfer its session state information to its redundant element. By maintaining a database of historic usage information, the downstream element can determine that an upstream failover has occurred when the amount of data it is processing drops below a minimum usage threshold. The minimum usage threshold is based on the historical usage data and a relationship between a given time in the past and the current time.

A method, system, and computer-readable media are provided for pausing a multimedia data stream. Techniques are disclosed that include receiving a pause request message, wherein the pause request message includes a sequence number of a last processed media frame within a multimedia data stream when a pause command was issued from a user. Techniques disclosed further include pausing a transmission of the multimedia data stream to a client device. Moreover, the techniques disclosed include determining a time-out value based on one or more local resources of a server, wherein the time-out value corresponds to a length of time the media stream can be paused. Furthermore, the techniques disclosed include creating a timestamp of when the transmission of the media stream was paused. Additionally, the techniques disclosed include sending the time-out value and the timestamp to the client device.

Pausing multimedia data streams

A data message originally addressed to a first mobile device is forwarded to a second mobile device in a wireless telecommunications network. Data messages may include text messages, picture messages, and video messages. In addition to forwarding data messages, other optional data message forwarding features are provided such as a copy feature that allows for a forwarded message to be copied back to the original addressee, and an invisible feature that prevents a data message sender from knowing that a data message has been forwarded by the data message addressee.

Methods and systems for automatically forwarding data messages in a wireless telecommunications network

A method, system, and medium are provided for determining whether a persistent or non-persistent connection should be given to a device that requested a web page. In one embodiment, upon receiving a request for the web page, the characteristics of the web page are evaluated to determine whether a persistent connection will be efficiently used when accessing with the web page. In another embodiment, the requesting user's behavior may be evaluated to determine whether, based on past behavior, the user will effectively use a persistent connection to the requested web site. A persistent connection is granted to requesting browsers most likely to make efficient use of the persistent connection based on the characteristics of the requested web site and/or the requesting user's browsing habits.

Allocation of connection persistence to mobile browsers

An application server provides communication services via a packet-switched network to mobile nodes based on their respective registrations in a registry, such as a home subscriber server (HSS) or domain name server (DNS). A registration proxy may be used to effect a registration in the registry on behalf of a mobile node when the mobile node lacks sufficient capability to effect the registration itself. The registration proxy may perform this function after receiving a notification that the mobile node is connected to the packet-switched network and after querying a capabilities server to determine that the mobile node lacks sufficient registration capability. To effect a registration in an HSS, the registration proxy may emulate either a serving call state control function (S-CSCF) or user equipment (UE).
