A method of monitoring an internal body temperature of a patient includes detecting a skin temperature of the patient using a temperature sensor in a body-mountable temperature monitor attached to the patient; calculating, using the temperature sensor, a heat flux associated with the body-mountable temperature monitor based on selectively activating a heater in the body-mountable temperature monitor; and determining the internal body temperature of the patient using the skin temperature and the heat flux.

Example biosensor devices having wake-up batteries and associated methods are disclosed. One example device includes a biosensor that has a first electrode for insertion into a subcutaneous layer beneath a patient's skin, and a second electrode coupled to the first electrode for insertion into the subcutaneous layer, and a first battery to apply a voltage across the first and second electrodes, the first battery at least partially electrically decoupled from the electrodes. The device also includes a second battery having an anode material coupled to the first electrode for insertion into the subcutaneous layer, and a portion of the second electrode. The second battery is activatable upon immersion in an electrolytic fluid. The device also includes a wake-up circuit to receive a signal from the second battery and, in response, to electrically couple the first battery to the first and second electrodes to activate the biosensor.

The present disclosure is related to a sensing device. The sensing device includes a sensor, a memory, a processor, and two radio units. A first radio unit of the two radio units is configured for bidirectional communication with an external device using a first radio communication protocol. The bidirectional communication comprises receiving configuration data from the external device via a first radio signal from the external device. The second radio unit of the two radio units is configured for unidirectional communication with the external device using a second radio communication protocol. The unidirectional communication comprises the second radio unit transmitting a second radio signal to the external device. The second radio signal communicates data including one or more measurements obtained by the sensor.

One example system includes a biosensor applicator having a housing defining a cavity configured to receive and physically couple to a biosensor device, and to apply the biosensor device to a wearer; an applicator coil antenna oriented around a first axis; and a biosensor device including a biosensor coil antenna; a first wireless transceiver electrically coupled to the biosensor coil antenna; a Bluetooth antenna; and a second wireless transceiver coupled to the Bluetooth antenna; wherein the biosensor device is physically coupled to the biosensor applicator and positioned at least partially within the cavity; and wherein the applicator coil antenna is configured to wirelessly receive electromagnetic ('EM') energy from a remote coil antenna and wirelessly provide at least a first portion of the received EM energy to the biosensor coil antenna.

Systems and methods for sensors with multimode wireless communications and for enabling NFC communications with a wearable biosensor

In some examples, a sensor holder device is described. The sensor holder device may include a rigid body, a set legs attached to the rigid body, a sensor guiding structure, a sensor retaining structure, and an electrical trace. The sensor retaining structure may be sized to accommodate a sensor wire. The electrical trace may extend proximate the sensor retaining structure and along one of the legs.

Computing systems and methods are provided for detecting skin conditions of humans. A computing device can authenticate a user via a fingerprint scan of a first skin region of the user using a three-dimensional (3D) sonic sensor. The device can generate a three-dimensional (3D) volumetric sonic measurement of a second skin region of the user based at least in part on one or more sonic pulses of the three-dimensional sonic sensor. The device can input data indicative of the 3D volumetric sonic measurement into one or more machine-learning models, generate one or more skin cancer condition identifications associated with the second skin region of the user based on one or more outputs of the one or more machine-learned models, and provide one or more outputs including the one or more skin cancer condition identifications associated with the second skin region of the user.

An adhesive layer applicator for a body-mountable device is disclosed. The applicator includes a housing defining a first opening through which a chamber is accessible, and a plurality of adhesive layers and a plurality of adhesive liners alternately stacked on a floor that is movable within the chamber. The size and shape of the opening corresponds to the size and shape of the body-mountable device. The housing is configured to receive at least a portion of the body-mountable device through the opening. A second opening is formed in each adhesive layer in the plurality of adhesive layers and a gel is accommodated within the second openings.

A body-mountable device includes a flexible substrate configured for mounting to a skin surface. The flexible substrate is configured to be adhered or otherwise mounted to the skin in a manner that minimally impacts activities of the body. The device includes a flexible display configured to provide indications to a user, e.g., indications of sensor readings, medical alerts, or operational states of the device. The display could be operated on a very low power budget, e.g., the display could be operated intermittently. In some examples, the display could include an e-paper display or similar low power display elements. In some examples, elements of the display, e.g., electrodes of a multi-segment display, could be formed on the flexible substrate such that additional elements of the display, e.g., a layer of display medium and a layer of transparent conductor, could be adhered or otherwise attached to the formed elements.

A dosage measurement system is adapted to receive a motion from a dosage injection mechanism disposed within a drug injection pen. The dosage measurement system includes a substrate, a sensing capacitor disposed on the substrate, and a lifting tab. The sensing capacitor includes a dielectric layer disposed between a base plate and an adjustable plate. The lifting tab is attached to the adjustable plate and positioned to engage an undulation pattern disposed on a component attached to the dosage injection mechanism. The lifting tab is adapted to physically change a separation distance between the adjustable plate and the base plate in a reciprocal manner in response to the motion of the dosage injection mechanism and engagement with the undulation pattern. A capacitance of the sensing capacitor changes in response to the engagement of the lifting tab with the undulation pattern and the motion of the dosage injection mechanism.

One example system for enabling NFC communications with a wearable biosensor includes a biosensor applicator including a housing defining a cavity configured to receive and physically couple to a biosensor device, and to apply the biosensor device to a wearer; a first applicator coil antenna physically coupled to the housing and defined within a first plane; and a second applicator coil antenna physically coupled to the housing and defined within a second plane substantially parallel to and different from the first plane, the second applicator coil antenna positioned coaxially with respect to the first applicator coil antenna, wherein the first applicator coil antenna is configured to wirelessly receive electromagnetic ('EM') energy from a transmitter coil antenna of a remote device and provide at least a first portion of the received EM energy to the second coil antenna; and a biosensor device including a biosensor coil antenna defined within a third plane substantially parallel to and different than the first and second planes; a wireless receiver electrically coupled to the biosensor coil antenna; wherein the biosensor device is physically coupled to the biosensor applicator and positioned within the cavity; wherein the biosensor coil antenna is positioned and oriented substantially coaxially with respect to the second applicator coil antenna, and wherein the second applicator coil antenna is configured to receive EM energy from the first applicator coil antenna and wirelessly transmit at least a second portion of the received EM energy to the biosensor coil antenna.

Systems and methods for enabling NFC communications with a wearable biosensor

A method is disclosed that includes removing an adhesive layer from a lower housing of a monitoring device; aligning the monitoring device with an opening of an adhesive applicator; coupling an uppermost adhesive layer that is positioned within the adhesive applicator with the lower housing; and removing the monitoring device from the opening of the adhesive applicator. A shape of the lower housing of the monitor corresponds to the shape of the opening of the adhesive applicator; and aligning the monitoring device with the opening of the adhesive applicator comprises matching the orientation of the lower housing to the orientation of the opening in the adhesive applicator. The method also includes the monitoring device selectively entering a battery preservation mode.
