A system and method for providing a user with an accurate audible pronunciation of a person's name in a non-call environment using the spoken name pre-recorded and saved at the person's Voice Mail system is described herein. An Application Server can obtain an audio file of a person speaking his or her name for the external Voice Mail System to which he or she subscribes, and provide the audio file to a User requesting to hear an accurate pronunciation of the person's name. The Application Server can provide this spoken name pronunciation feature as part of a Directory Information Service, talking call waiting feature, or to other Online Applications.

A method and system for handling calls to emergency telephone numbers by a VoIP telephone that is configured as an extension to a home telephone. The VoIP telephone is provided with a home telephone number that is different than the home telephone number. The location of the VoIP telephone is maintained in a caller ID location database and is regularly updated when necessary. Location updates are made at least when the VoIP telephone registers using a different IP address than was used for the most recent communication. The system is configured to enable the VoIP telephone to ring when a call is placed to the home telephone number. In addition, non-emergency calls from the VoIP telephone are accompanied by caller ID information associated with home telephone. In this way, VoIP telephones may be configured as extension telephones and used to make emergency calls, even when being used nomadically.

An apparatus in one example has: a telecommunication system having an originating switch operatively coupled to at least one terminating switch; the terminating switch having at least one terminating call feature for a respective terminating terminal operatively coupled thereto; and the telecommunication system having a terminating call feature control function such that enabling and disabling of the at least one terminating call feature for the respective terminating terminal is effected by a predetermined signal message from the originating switch. Thus, embodiments of the present method and apparatus provide a mechanism for communication from the originating switch to the terminating switch regarding the nature of the call and the kinds of terminating features that are to be applied or not applied.

The system for providing emergency voice mail service includes two components: a first component that informs a calling party that emergency voice mail service has been activated due to an interruption in telephone service provided by the affected local exchange(s), and a second component that provides emergency voice mail service to customers who are displaced from their residences or simply affected by the service outage. The calling party that wishes to leave a message or the customer whose service is interrupted and wishes to listen to their messages calls a nationwide toll free number and is routed to the Emergency Voice Mail System. The caller is asked to enter the telephone number of the customer who is out of service and then can enter a predetermined code to leave a voice mail message or retrieve a voice mail message for the wire -line or wireless customer who is out of service.

The content access control system has a content permissions field in the Home Location Register database for each mobile subscriber. The content permissions data are managed by a content manager who has content access responsibility for the mobile subscriber pursuant to an existing management relationship, such as parent-child or employer-employee. The content manager initiates a communication connection to a designated content access control administration system and uniquely identifies the subscriber via their mobile communication device identification and assigns one or more content rating access permissions to each identified subscriber. The content rating permissions comprise a definition of the content that is prohibited and/or permitted by indicating via selecting content ratings or other such code definitions to identify the appropriate content. The content access control administration system loads the content ratings permissions into the Home Location Register (HLR) and/or Home Subscriber Server (HSS) associated with the identified mobile communication device(s).

The Simulated Facility Group System manages a plurality of IP Centrex Groups within a GR303 interface, where each IP Centrex Group is assigned to a unique Simulated Facility Group. In addition, the Simulated Facility Group System enables the completion of intra-IP Centrex Group intercom calls without the use of IP Centrex Access Facility bandwidth.

The dual mode handset system provides unified cellular service and wire-line service with a single Directory Number assigned to the dual mode handset and a corresponding cordless base station that are connected to the subscriber's local wire-line (POTS line) connection to the telephone network. The dual mode handset is programmed to operate as a cordless telephone when in proximity of the cordless base station. The handset operates as a cellular telephone when it is out of reach of the cordless base station. The dual mode handset is assigned the same telephone number as the subscriber's connection to a local wire-line telephone switching system. Consequently, the Caller ID information is consistent on calls originated through the dual mode handset, regardless of whether the call passes through the cordless base station to the subscriber's connection to a local wire-line telephone switching system or the cellular network.

A &ldquo;Call Me&rdquo; conference call system includes a multiport conference unit (MCU) interconnected with the public switched telecommunications network (PSTN), a telecommunications switching system also interconnected with the PSTN, a service control point (SCP) or other intelligent network control component having at least a signaling connection to the switching system, a Call Me conference bridge reservation system interconnected with the SCP and the MCU, and suitable facilities interconnecting these components. When a conference reservation is made, information regarding the conference is distributed to the SCP and MCU. A &ldquo;Called Party Busy&rdquo; trigger is applied to the conference host's line. To join the conference, the host and participants alike simply call the host's telephone number. The switching system, finding the host's line busy, queries the SCP, which instructs it to redirect the call to the MCU. The MCU associates the call with a reserved conference by matching the called number with a host's telephone number in reservation records. This advantageously avoids the need for hosts to distribute, and participants to receive a special conference bridge telephone number or access code.

An apparatus, method and system are provided for personal telecommunication incoming call screening and alerting for call waiting applications. During a first telecommunication call, the method includes, first, receiving a second telecommunication call, and second, determining a relative priority of the second telecommunication call compared to the first telecommunication call. When the second telecommunication call has a same relative priority or a higher relative priority than the first telecommunication call, the method provides a first level of priority service to the second telecommunication call, such as interrupting the user and providing a distinctive user alert during the first telecommunication call indicative of the same or higher level of priority. When the second telecommunication call has a lower relative priority than the first telecommunication call, the method provides a second level of priority service to the second telecommunication call, such as providing a distinctive user alert indicative of a lower relative priority, and providing automatic messaging or voice mail service to the second telecommunication call. The various embodiments determine these relative priorities based upon user input or based upon the observed, actual behavior of the user or subscriber, such as whether the user allows certain current calls to be interrupted by other incoming calls, whether the consumer accepts and continues with an incoming call while releasing the current call, or whether the consumer returns to the current call from call waiting while releasing the incoming call.

An apparatus, method and system are illustrated which provide for personal telecommunication incoming call screening and alerting. In the various embodiments, the incoming call screening and alerting utilizes a personalized affinity database, based upon individual calling behaviors and patterns. In the preferred embodiment, the affinity database includes telephone numbers and names for outgoing calls (dialed numbers), and for those incoming calls that have a predetermined minimum duration following answering (minimum off hook time period). As a consequence, erroneous or unwanted incoming calls are not included within the affinity database. The preferred system includes a line unit couplable to customer premise equipment (such as a telephone), a network signaling interface, a network trunk interface, a memory, and a processor. The processor includes instructions for determining whether received network signaling information includes caller identification information, which matches an affinity number, such as a number from which a consumer would like to receive a telephone call. For automatic call screening and alerting, the processor has further instructions for assigning a first priority to a corresponding network communication when the caller identification information matches an affinity number, such as providing a distinctive ring or allowing the communication during certain periods of time, and for assigning a second priority to the corresponding network communication when the caller identification information does not match an affinity number, such as routing the incoming call to an automatic messaging or voice mail system.

Apparatus, method and system for personal telecommunication call screening and alerting

An apparatus, method and system are provided for personal telecommunication speed calling. The system includes a line unit couplable to customer premise equipment; a network signaling interface for receiving network signaling information; a network trunk interface for receiving corresponding network communications; a memory; and a processor coupled to the memory, to the line unit, to the network signaling interface, and to the network trunk interface. The processor includes instructions for generating a user specific affinity database, which contains names and corresponding telephone numbers of those people with whom the user has an affinity and therefore is likely to want to speed call. The affinity database is generated based upon affinity information derived from the user's outgoing calls and the user's incoming calls which have been answered and which have a minimum duration. The affinity database is ordered and displayed for the user, who may then select an affinity name for automatic speed calling of the corresponding affinity telephone number.

A method for identifying damaged cable pairs in a pulp cable comprises arbitrarily attaching proximal ends of damaged cable pairs to ports on a first connector block of a service restoration system (SRS), and arbitrarily attaching distal ends of damaged cable pairs to ports on a second connector block of the SRS. Directory number information associated with each damaged cable pair is retrieved by the SRS from affected subscribers, and the serving switch. If a match of directory number information is found, the proximal damaged cable pair end is interconnected to the distal damaged cable pair end of a single cable pair via SRS switch fabric. The SRS periodically generates a status report including port locations of corresponding ends of a damaged cable pair so that the ends may be permanently spliced together.
