An electrical storage device includes high surface area fibers (e.g., shaped fibers and/or microfibers) coated with carbon (graphite, expanded graphite, activated carbon, carbon black, carbon nanofibers, CNT, or graphite coated CNT), electrolyte, and/or electrode active material (e.g., lead oxide) in electrodes. The electrodes are used to form electrical storage devices such as electrochemical batteries, electrochemical double layer capacitors, and asymmetrical capacitors.

Electrical power storage devices

The present disclosure relates to lead-acid batteries and the manufacture of lead-acid batteries containing acid pump devices to promote the circulation of electrolyte within the battery and/or battery cells to reduce acid stratification and improve battery performance. In various embodiments, battery cell components are assembled within an acid pump assembly that encloses the battery cell components on at least the bottom and ends. In various embodiments, at least a portion of the acid pumps may be integrally molded with or secured to various parts of the battery housing including the cover, side walls, and cell walls. In various embodiments; space for the acid pumps is created by varying the shape of the battery housing (e.g., the side walls or cell walls) and/or by modifying the shape, size, and or position of one or more of the battery electrodes or separators.

Secondary battery with improved destratification

A method for predicting the remaining life of a battery for a vehicle includes obtaining a value representative of the amount of remaining life for a battery in a new and fully charged state and monitoring at least one parameter of the battery during use of the battery. The method also includes obtaining an acceleration factor based on the at least one monitored parameter and estimating the amount of life lost from the battery utilizing the acceleration factor.

A battery monitoring system is disclosed. The system comprises a means for acquiring a value representative of a first period of time during which the battery will deliver a sufficient amount of power. The system also comprises a means for measuring a set of parameters comprising a voltage of the battery and a temperature of the battery during a second period of time. The system also comprises a means for predicting whether the battery will deliver the sufficient amount of power during a third period of time less than the first period of time. An output signal is provided if the means for predicting determines that the battery will deliver the sufficient amount of power during the third period of time. A system for determining whether a battery for a vehicle will deliver a sufficient amount of power for a sufficient amount of time is also disclosed.

A vehicle anti-theft system that disables a vehicle engine upon detection of an unauthorized vehicle start-up, after the engine is running, by disconnecting the vehicle battery and draining the vehicle electrical system voltage to ground through a resistor. When the system is armed, it monitors whether the engine is running and has been recently started by detecting vibrations, fluctuations in the VES voltage, and the actual VES voltage. The system includes an electro-mechanical switch that has a battery internal contact, a vehicle electrical system, the standard battery external terminal, contact and a disconnect contact. When the switch is connected to the battery contact, the vehicle battery is connected in the circuit. When the switch is connected to the vehicle electrical system contact, the system is connected to ground through a resistance and the battery is disconnected from circuit. When the switch is connected to the disconnect contact, the battery is disconnected and the vehicle electrical system is not connected to ground. When the switch is not energized, it is either connected to the battery contact or the disconnect contact. When the switch is energized, the switch will switch to the vehicle electrical system contact, and then when it is deenergized, it will switch to the opposite battery contact or disconnect contact. The system includes logic so that if the engine is running and has been recently started when it is armed, the system will energize the switch to disconnect it from the battery contact and connect it to the vehicle electrical system contact for a predetermined time to drain the electrical system voltage to ground.

A vehicle anti-theft system that disables a vehicle engine upon detection of an unauthorized vehicle start-up, after the engine is running, by disconnecting the vehicle battery and draining the alternator voltage to ground through a resistor. A fob transmitter transmits a coded frequency signal that is received by a receiver associated with the anti-theft system to arm the system. When the system is armed, it monitors whether the engine is running and has been recently started using a combination of vibration detection, voltage fluctuations in the battery voltage and the actual battery voltage. If the system determines that the engine is running and has been recently started, the system will issue a first command that opens a relay switch to disconnect the battery and a second command that closes a switch to connect the alternator to ground through the resistor. In order to prevent a vehicle from being jump started by using a second battery, the system includes a reset clock and associated delay that resets the decision to connect the alternator to ground at periodic intervals so as to repeatedly test for the presence of the second battery and cause the engine to stall after the second battery is disconnected. A driver entry detection portion of the system determines whether someone has entered the vehicle, and issues a chirp signal to notify the occupant that the system is armed. A state of charge algorithm is also provided to determine whether the battery voltage has reached a minimum state of charge for reliably starting the vehicle, and also disconnect the battery once the minimum level has been reached.

Anti-theft system for disabling a vehicle engine

A battery system for a vehicle includes a main battery for energizing the vehicle SLI circuits and an auxiliary battery for energizing the vehicle EHC system, the battery system providing back-up of the auxiliary battery by the main battery under certain conditions and back-up of the main battery by the auxiliary battery under certain other conditions, and the battery system providing opportunity charging of the auxiliary battery once the vehicle engine is running whereby the auxiliary battery shares the charging current with the main battery with the auxiliary battery being gradually connected to the source of charging current for the main battery by increasing the duty cycle of the drive circuit that connects the auxiliary battery to the source of charging current while monitoring the state of charge of the main battery and decreasing the duty cycle of the drive circuit to protect the main battery state of charge. In other embodiments, separate sources of charging current are provided for the auxiliary battery.

Vehicle battery system providing battery back-up and opportunity charging

A dual battery system includes a first battery and a second battery electrically connected in parallel to positive and negative terminals. The first battery has an open circuit voltage greater than that of the second battery so that, as current is drawn from both batteries, the amount of current drawn from each respective battery at a given voltage level varies depending on the magnitude of the current. The first battery preferably supplies most of the current at low to moderate current loads, whereas the second battery provides a greater portion of the total current at high current loads. According to one aspect of the invention, wherein the batteries are each lead-acid batteries, the desired difference in open circuit voltage is provided by using sulfuric acid electrolytes of different specific gravities in the two batteries. For this purpose the electrolyte specific gravity of the second battery is preferably at least 0.03 less than that of the first battery.

A charge management system and method, within a vehicle having a battery and generation subsystem, is disclosed which senses the temperature of electrolyte in the cells of the vehicle battery and the voltage across the terminals of the battery. The voltage indicates the probability of the existence of excess electrical capacity from the vehicle generation subsystem. In response to a cold temperature and excess power, the system uses the excess power of the vehicle generation subsystem to heat the battery to a desired level. Once the battery reaches the desired temperature level, the system dicontinues the heating of the battery. In the event that there is not excess power, then the system, by maintaining the battery heating element in an off position, does not interfere with the charging of the battery.
