A method and apparatus are provided for distributing or redistributing licenses from a failed or unavailable license controller to one or more backup license controllers. Each controller has an initial count of licenses it can serve or allocate to clients desiring access to licensed electronic content. Each controller maintains a set of data that identifies the initial license counts and that also identifies backup relationships between controllers. Each such relationship for a given controller identifies which controllers will inherit licenses if the given controller becomes unavailable, and how many (e.g., a percentage) of the given controller's license that will be inherited. A redistribution plan for a given controller may have multiple levels, wherein a subsequent level may be applied only if all controllers designated as backups in the preceding level are also unavailable.

Method and apparatus for distributing licenses

Methods, systems, and apparatus provide efficient and flexible networking quality of service as well as transport protocol design. A hybrid transport/network quality of service (HTNQ) scheme improves the performance of TCP over specific links or network paths that are subject to high latency, a high bandwidth-delay product, high packet loss, and/or bit errors. A callback mechanism can be used between a packet scheduler and a transport module to control the transmission rate of packets across one or more connections or links.

Cooperative operation of network transport and network quality of service modules

Protocol acceleration is performed between clients and servers over a network wherein transport connections are established between clients/servers and/or their proxies for acceleration of traffic that uses certain protocols. A first transport connection for a first application protocol and a second transport connection for a second application protocol can be made between two proxies, wherein a client-side proxy is in communication with a client and a server-side proxy is in communication with a server, and the proxies use information from message payloads flowing between the client device and the server device over the first transport connection for acceleration of traffic over the second transport connection. Examples of transport protocols include a file server protocol and a storage access protocol. Cross-protocol acceleration can be expanded so that information obtained for one client on one protocol can be used to accelerate traffic for another client with the same or different protocol.

Cross-session protocol acceleration and its application to storage area network file systems

The present invention relates generally to the field of reflector-type antennas based on the offset Gregorian design having a substantially paraboloidal-shaped primary reflector and a substantially ellipsoidal secondary reflector displaced from the optical axis of the primary reflector. The first focus of the secondary reflector is substantially coincident with the focus of the primary reflector and a feed or detector is placed substantially at the second focus of the secondary reflector. A partially open shroud placed between the primary reflector and the secondary reflector is shown to result in reduced ground interference and improved antenna efficiency and sensitivity.

A freezer alarm system and apparatus for monitoring the temperature in the freezer compartment of a refrigeration unit includes a housing mountable on a wall adjacent the refrigeration unit for plugging into a wall outlet. A capillary tube extends from the housing and terminates with a temperature sensor that is mounted inside the refrigeration unit for sensing when the temperature increases therein past a given temperature preset by an adjustable thermostat located on the housing. When this event occurs contacts within the housing close thereby actuating an audible buzzer and a visible luminary alarm warning the owner that the temperature within the refrigeration unit has exceeded a safe pre-set level and that the refrigeration unit needs checked for remedial action.

Freezer alarm system and apparatus for refrigeration units

In a network, a query originator injects queries of network devices into the network at a query node using query messages. The network transports the query messages to the network devices, or to network nodes at which queries about the network devices can be answered. Query responses from the network devices or network nodes are directed through the network to a collection node or nodes. As an internal network node receives multiple query responses from network devices, the internal network node might aggregate, as needed, the multiple query responses into an aggregated query response that preferably occupies less bandwidth than the aggregated multiple query responses. Where the result desired at the collection node is a computed function of the multiple query responses, the computed function can be performed at each internal network node on the multiple query responses received at that node, thus distributing the computation needed to form a collected response to the query. Queries might request real-time or non-real-time responses and queries might request one response, periodic responses or one response for each occurrence of an event. The internal network nodes might store lookup tables, or access a centralized lookup table, that specify details of queries, thus obviating the need for each query message to carry all of the necessary details of the query.

Scalable and programmable query distribution and collection in a network of queryable devices

A system for classifying, monitoring, controlling and otherwise managing and allocating bandwidth of a network to data streams. A method for allocating bandwidth of a data network to a plurality of data streams is provided. The method comprises specifying apportionment of the bandwidth to a plurality of data classes. Receiving a plurality of data streams wherein each data stream has an associated data class. Negotiating a transfer rate for each data stream, wherein the transfer rate is limited to the bandwidth apportioned to the data class associated with each data stream and transmitting the data streams on the data network at the negotiated transfer rates.

A method of improving a phenotypic defect in a cell that contains a conformationally defective target protein wherein the conformational defect causes the phenotype defect, comprising contacting a first cell that expresses said conformationally defective target protein with an amount of a protein stabilizing agent that is effective to improve the conformational defect, thereby improving the phenotypic defect of the first cell in comparison with a second cell having the same conformationally defective target protein and phenotypic defect, wherein the second cell is not contacted with the protein stabilizing agent.

Correction of genetic defects using chemical chaperones

A method of improving a phenotypic defect in a cell that contains a conformationally defective target protein wherein the conformational defect causes the phenotype defect, comprising contacting a first cell that expresses said confonnationally defective target protein with an amount of a protein stabilizing agent that is effective to improve the conformational defect, thereby improving the phenotypic defect of the first cell in comparison with a second cell having the same conformationally defective target protein and phenotypic defect, wherein the second cell is not contacted with the protein stabilizing agent.

Thermotolerant phenotypes are developed in cells, tissues, organs and organisms by the administration of benzoquinonoid ansamycins such as herbimycin A and any of various analogs. The general stress tolerance resulting from this inducement offers benefits in a variety of ways, including rendering surgical patients more able to withstand the rigors of surgery, prolonging the shelf life of organs excised from organ donors, and prolonging the viability of tissue-cultured cells and organs.

Inducement of thermotolerance with benzoquinonoid ansamycins

The present invention provides methods of improving phenotypic defects that are caused by conformationally defective target proteins. The methods of the invention comprise exposing a cell that expresses a conformationally defective target protein with an amount of a protein stabilizing agent that is effective to improve the phenotypic defect. Nonlimiting examples of protein stabilizing agents include dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), deuterated water, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). Nonlimiting examples of defective target proteins to be treated include the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein and prion proteins. In one embodiment, the invention provides methods for detecting protein stabilizing agents. In another embodiment, the invention provides methods for detecting cells and pathological conditions caused by improper folding and protein processing.
