A distension/compression device for assisting breathing in a subject in one embodiment includes a first tube includes a flexible and elastic material that forms a first tube lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end of the first tube. Longitudinal expansion of the first tube is restricted less than radial expansion of the first tube. A connection element including a first air supply port is in fluid communication with an open proximal end of the first tube lumen and attached to a proximal end of the first tube. A method for assisting breathing of a patient and a method for assisting the clearing of secretions is also included.

Device and method for assisting breathing in a subject

A distension/compression device for assisting breathing in a subject according to one embodiment includes a first tube having a flexible and elastic material that forms a first tube lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end of the first tube. Disclosed are systems and methods for use of an inductive link for a communication channel in a transcutaneous energy transfer system. An example system may include a resonant circuit associated with an external primary, a power transistor connected to the resonant circuit and configured to drive the resonant circuit with a first time-varying electrical signal having a frequency, and a power driver connected to the power transistor that is configured to set the frequency of the first time-varying electrical signal to a resonant frequency to enable power transfer from the external primary to an implanted secondary. The example system may further include a communication driver operatively connected to the power transistor and configured to encode the first time-varying electrical signal with a data signal by modulating an attribute of the time-varying electrical signal as electrical power is transferred from the external primary to the implanted secondary.

Data communication in a transcutaneous energy transfer system

Disclosed are systems and methods for use of an inductive link for a communication channel in a transcutaneous energy transfer system.

Disclosed are systems and methods for measuring and calculating parameters to control and monitor a power transfer in an implanted medical device, including operating the device in a plurality of scalable power modes and/or coupling modes. The system may shift between or among power and/or coupling modes based on input such as data received over system communication lines, programmable timers, or electrical loading information. The system may also shift between or among power and/or coupling modes based on calculated amounts of coupling, levels of detected heat flux, and/or amounts of estimated temperature changes.

Power scaling

Embodiments of the invention provide a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) cannula that includes multiple independent sensors may help decrease the incidence of ventricular collapse and provide automatic speed control. A cannula may include two or more independent sensors. One sensor may measure ventricular pressure, while another may measure ventricular volume and/or ventricular wall location. With this information an automatic control system may be configured to adjust pump speed to minimize the likelihood of ventricular collapse and maximize LVAD flow in response to physiologic demand. Typically the volume sensors are conductance sensors. Further embodiments provide LVADs that are powered by RF energy.

Smart tip LVAD inlet cannula

An apparatus adapted to be used in connection with an artificial heart assembly having a blood inlet conduit, a blood outlet conduit, and a pump that pumps blood from the blood inlet conduit to the blood outlet conduit. The apparatus includes an internal coil adapted to be implanted beneath the skin of a subject, an AC-to-DC converter that provides electric power from the internal coil to the pump, an external coil adapted to be disposed adjacent the internal coil and separated from the internal coil by the skin of a subject, the external coil being coupled to transmit electric power to the internal coil through the skin of the subject. A DC-to-AC converter is coupled to the external coil and to a source of DC power. The DC-to-AC converter selectively converts DC power from the DC power source into either a first frequency during a first period of time or a second frequency during a second period of time, the first frequency being different than the second frequency.

Artificial heart power supply system

An apparatus adapted to be used in connection with an artificial heart assembly having a blood inlet conduit, a blood outlet conduit, and a pump that is adapted to pump blood from the blood inlet conduit to the blood outlet conduit. The apparatus includes an internal coupler adapted to be implanted beneath the skin of a subject and an external coupler operatively coupled to the internal coupler so that the external coupler induces an alternating electric current in the internal coupler. A rectification circuit is coupled to receive the alternating electric current induced in the internal coupler and generates DC electric power for the motor. The rectification circuit operates synchronously with, or at the same frequency as, the alternating current induced in the internal coupler and produces DC electric power from the alternating electric current. A drive circuit is operatively coupled to the rectification circuit and causes the rectification circuit to operate synchronously with, or at the same frequency as, the electric current induced in the internal coupler.

Artificial heart with synchronous rectification

An apparatus for use in an artificial heart assembly includes an internal coil adapted to be implanted beneath the skin of a subject and an external coil coupled to transmit electric power to the internal coil through the skin of the subject. The apparatus includes a DC-to-AC converter coupled to the external coil which selectively converts DC power from a DC power source into either a first frequency or a second frequency, the first frequency having a plurality of cycles each of a first duration and the second frequency having a plurality of cycles each of a second duration longer than the first duration. The DC-to-AC converter comprises four switching components each coupled in parallel with a respective one of four passive components and a drive circuit operatively coupled to the switching components. The drive circuit causes the switching components to be switched to a nonconductive state so that they are nonconductive for a time period and so that electric current flows through a plurality of the passive components during that time period.

Artificial heart with energy recovery

An artificial heart assembly is provided with a blood inlet conduit, a blood outlet conduit, a pump that pumps blood from the blood inlet conduit to the blood outlet conduit, and an internal electromagnetic coupler adapted to be implanted beneath the skin of a subject. A voltage regulator is operatively coupled to the internal electromagnetic coupler to generate an output voltage that is supplied to the pump. The voltage regulator causes the magnitude of the output voltage to be modulated in accordance with a transmit data signal. An external electromagnetic coupler is operatively coupled to generate an electric signal at least in part from the output voltage, and a decoding circuit is coupled to sense a parameter of the electric signal generated by the external electromagnetic coupler. The decoding circuit generates a receive data signal from the sensed electric signal, the receive data signal corresponding to the transmit data signal.

Artificial heart data communication system

A catheter having a first magnet is guided into a pocket of air entrapped in a pumping chamber for an artificial heart using a probe having a second magnet, a Hall-effect sensor an electronic circuit and an indicator disposed thereon. The Hall-effect sensor generates a voltage signal that is related to the distance between the catheter tip and the probe tip and that is measured by the electronic circuit and thereafter used to actuate the indicator. The indicator indicates when the probe is close enough to the catheter such that the catheter tip has been magnetically captured by the probe tip. Once magnetically captured, the probe tip, while remaining outside of the pumping chamber, is used to guide the catheter tip to an elevated portion of the pumping chamber wherein the pocket of entrapped air is located. A vacuum generating device attached to a distal end of the catheter tube is then used to withdraw the air from the pumping chamber.

Apparatus and method for removing a pocket of air from a blood pump

An artificial heart assembly, designed for implantation into a subject, which may be a total artificial heart or a ventricular assist device. The artificial heart assembly has a blood inlet conduit, a blood outlet conduit, a pumping mechanism for pumping blood from the blood inlet conduit to the blood outlet conduit, and a sensorless, DC brushless motor operatively connected to the pumping mechanism. The motor is reversibly driven in a first direction and a second direction, the motor changing between the first and second directions at a rate of at least 30 times per minute. The artificial heart assembly has means for periodically applying electrical signals to a plurality of the motor terminals while leaving at least one of the motor terminals unenergized, means for detecting a voltage at the unenergized motor terminal, and means for determining, based upon the voltage at the unenergized terminal, the angular position of the rotor with respect to the stator.
