A method and system for enhancing the execution performance of program code. An analysis of the program code is used to generate code usage information for each code module. For each module, the code usage information is used to determine whether the code module should be separated from its original module container. If so, the code module is migrated to a new module container, and the code module in the original module container is replaced with a reference to the code module in the new module container.

A system and method are provided to allow demand loading and discarding of Java executable image (JXE) files. The virtual machine allocates an address space for a requested JXE program. The read-only portion of the JXE file is memory mapped from its nonvolatile location to the allocated memory space using read-only mapping and the read/write section of the JXE file are loaded into memory. When a page of the JXE program is needed, a page fault occurs if the read-only portion has not been loaded into memory. The operating system's page fault handler retrieves the needed page(s) from the nonvolatile storage location based upon the mapping data that resulted from the previously performed memory mapping. Because the read-only section of the JXE file is memory mapped using read-only mapping, the operating system's paging process is free to discard previously loaded memory pages that contain read-only portions of the JXE file.

Broadcast information is classified in categories to facilitate user selection and filtration of the broadcast information which is processed for presentation to the user. The broadcast information is transmitted in the form of a meta frame and one or more category frames which are repeated in a continuous cycle. Meta frames and category frames are distinguished and identified by major and minor codes following a frame starting delimiter. The meta frame contains a description of each of the available categories, together with an identification of respective category major and minor codes, the frequency on which the respective category frame is transmitted if multiple frequencies are employed, and the relative position of the respective category frame within transmission cycle. If multiple frequencies are employed, the meta frame may be repeatedly broadcast on a base frequency while subsets of the category frames are transmitted on different frequencies, or the meta and category frames may be repeated in sequence on all frequencies but with varying offsets. Upon user selection of a category, the category information within the meta frame is employed to construct or key a filter for the broadcast information. The selected category frame data is received and added to a local database, formatted, and presented to the user.

The persistent manager object on the server subsystem may then store the persistent data to make it subsequently be available for the client subsystem.

A voice command interface in a data processing system and method are implemented to allow a user to speak a name of a link identified by Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) format to receive a desired web page from a communication network, such as the Internet. During operation of the data processing system and method for implementing the voice command interface, a client computer accesses a current web page using a server. When a new web page is accessed, a central processing unit in the data processing system provides control signals to a speech recognition unit to clear a vocabulary list currently stored within the speech recognition unit. Subsequently, the central processing unit commences to parse the HTML source code corresponding to the accessed web page. The central processing unit then determines whether the accessed web page has any links therein. If the web page does have links, the central processing unit detects those links during a parsing operation and enables the speech recognition unit to stored the text displayed to an external user which corresponds to the link in a special vocabulary list of the speech recognition unit. A user is then able to provide a voice command to access the link by speaking the text stored within the special vocabulary list. Upon speaking that text, the central processing unit accesses a web page corresponding to the link identified by the text.

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for providing a data framework and associated client/server protocol for storing and exchanging data among computers in a network. A data schema having an n-way tree-type structure with a root node layer, intermediate node layers, and a data layer for storing configuration data is described. The intermediate node layers contain a multitude of nodes containing categorical information relating to components and various aspects of the computer network. Following a tree structure, each intermediate node and root node has branches emanating to nodes below it. These subordinate nodes are referred to as children nodes. The data node layer is at the bottom of the tree and contains actual specific configuration data relating to components and other aspects of the computer network, such as information regarding users registered to use the network. Certain portions of the intermediate nodes and data nodes make up persistent dataspaces in which the actual specific configuration data in the data nodes is modified on either a client or a server computer, and is stored on the server computer. This allows the associated specific information to be nonvolatile and accessible by a multiplicity of client computers. The client/server protocol allows configuration data to be transferred between a client and server and for the maintenance of the connection between the client and the server. Configuration data and user profiles are stored on a server computer thereby minimizing the amount of memory needed by the client computer, which can be a device with low memory capabilities such as network computers, PDAs, or smart cards. The protocol also includes a method of coalescing configuration data before sending it to a client computer thereby reducing the memory requirements of the client computer.

A method and system in a computer network for dynamically bundling and launching hypertext files within archive files, wherein the computer network includes at least one client connectable to one or more servers. Initially, an archive file is established within the computer network wherein particular subroutines are maintained. Thereafter, a particular hypertext file is associated with a selected subroutine maintained within the archive file. The particular hypertext file and the selected subroutine are subsequently bundled together within the archive file. Thereafter, the archive file is automatically transmitted to the client from a server maintained within the computer network, in response to a client request to download the hypertext file, such that the subroutine and the hypertext file are downloaded within a single selected archive file from the server, thereby reducing download time and increasing data packaging efficiency. The subroutine may be composed of an applet and the hypertext file may be based on an HTML file having tags which point to particular applets and data associated with the applets.

Method and system in a computer network for bundling and launching

A voice command interface is implemented in a data processing system whereby a user may select any application which is currently running on the data processing system without having to manually modify a list of programs which may be accessed by a voice command and without having to request the program by its full name. To allow a user to access a program which is currently running on the data processing system, control within the data processing system ensures that a name of the program or application which is opened by an external user is added to a window list automatically. Similarly, a program which is no longer enabled by a user and running on the data processing system will be automatically removed from the window list. Additionally, the data processing system and methodology implemented therein allow an external user to speak merely a portion of a title of an application to access the application using a voice command. When two or more programs have the same or similar titles, the data processing system first accesses a program which is first on the window list. If this is not the program desired by the user, the user then repeats the command and a next program or application is accessed and brought into focus. This procedure repeats and may even loop back to the first access program if the user continues to repeat commands accessing the program having similar or the same titles.
