A shingle having a headlap section and a buttlap section with at least one portion of the buttlap section having a relatively uniform color and another portion of the buttlap section having a color gradient or gradation from light to dark. An illusion of depth or thickness is created on the portion of the buttlap section having the color gradient. The buttlap section defines in part the exposed weather surface of the associated shingle. The relatively uniform color portions may be formed on tabs or dragon teeth and the color gradient formed on a backer sheet disposed beneath the tabs. Openings between adjacent tabs expose the color gradient to view. A plurality of horizontal striations may be used to establish the desired color gradient from light to dark. The amount of tone and contrast may be selected to create the desired illusion of depth or thickness. The amount of contrast may be varied depending upon the color selected for each shingle. The number of horizontal striations and their width may also be varied to provide the desired color gradient.

A system for connecting partition wall panels includes at least two panels, each having substantially U-shape upper and lower frame members and multi-faced vertical frame members attached to the upper and lower frame pieces. The multi-faced frame members include three faces of substantially equal width, each face adapted to abut against one of three faces of a multi-faced frame member of a similar panel. A connecting clip engages the abutting faces of the frame members at either end thereof.

Panels of composite wood material are formed in a wet process which includes depositing a layer of wet composite wood material in a mat on a press wire screen mesh and moving the screen mesh to carry the mat into a pressing position between a pair of spaced apart pressure plates having generally matching, contoured facing surfaces for shaping the outer face and a smoothly contoured back face of the panel. The back face of the panel is not flat and generally follows or matches the shape or contour of the outer face so that regions of high fiber stress and dense, brittle areas of high fiber compression are generally eliminated. The resulting finished panels having excellent machining qualities, more uniform surface coating absorption characteristics, more uniform thickness and less rapid moisture absorption properties, along with a lower tendency to check, crack or split.

A new and improved method of making an opening extending between opposite faces of thin sheet material comprises the steps of forming a depression in one of the faces of the sheet material resulting in a projection opposite the depression on the opposite face protruding outwardly thereof and removing the projection to form an opening extending completely through the sheet material between said opposite faces.

Method of making building panels and the like

A method of making panels of composite wood material in a wet process includes depositing a layer of wet composite wood material in a mat on a press wire screen mesh and moving the screen mesh to carry the mat into a pressing position between a pair of spaced apart pressure plates having generally matching, contoured facing surfaces for shaping the outer face and a smoothly contoured back face of the panel. The pressure plates are moved toward one another compressing the mat of wet material and biasing the supporting screen mesh to conform generally to the contour of one of the pressure plates. After a suitable time interval for molding, the pressure plates are moved apart and the press wire screen mesh is rewound on a roll to aid in separating the completed panel from the mesh. The finished panel is carried by the screen mesh away from the pressure plates for unloading as the screen is rolled up and the deformations formed in the screen during molding are flattened out as the screen is rewound on the roll.

A building panel for exterior and interior wall and roof surface includes an elongated body formed of a relatively thin walled, molded hardboard material having upper and lower edges, opposite ends, an outer weather face adapted to resemble the profiles historical or traditional siding and shingle shapes and a back face generally contoured to match the outer surface. The body includes a lower edge portion extending upwardly and outwardly of the lower edge of the panel which joins an intermediate fascia portion spaced outwardly of the lower edge. An elongated fastener receiving strip is formed along an upper edge of the intermediate fascia portion and includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart fastener receiving depressions integrally molded therein. The strip has a machined back face and the machine cut intersects an outer face of the panel around the depressions thereby forming an open slot extending completely through the panel in each depression for receiving a fastener shank for securing the building panel on a building structure. An upper edge portion of the panel joins an upper edge of the fastener receiving strip and includes an upwardly and outwardly extending first segment adapted to underlie a lower edge portion of a panel laid up in a next higher course in a building wall structure. The upper edge portion also includes a second segment which extends between the first segment and the upper edge of the panel, generally parallel of the intermediate fascia portion and adapted to underlie a portion of the fascia portion of the panel laid up in the next higher course.

A building panel for exterior and interior wall and roof surfaces comprises an elongated body formed of relatively thin, molded hardboard having upper and lower edges, opposite ends, an outer face adapted for exposure to the weather and a back face generally following the contour thereof. The body includes a lower edge portion extending upwardly and outwardly of the lower edge of the panel and integralling joining an intermediate fascia portion spaced outwardly of the lower edge. An upper edge portion integrally joins an upper edge of the intermediate fascia portion and includes an upwardly and outwardly extending segment adapted to underlie a lower edge portion of a panel(s) laid up in a next higher course. The upper edge portion also includes a second segment extending between the first segment and the upper edge of the panel and this second segment is generally parallel of the intermedate fascia panel portion and is adapted to underlie a portion of an intermediate fascia portion of a panel(s) laid up in a next higher course. The upper edge portion is formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart, fastener receiving depressions extending inwardly of an outer face of the second segment of the upper edge portion. Longitudinally extending slot means are cut through the thin molded hardboard in the depressions between the inner and outer faces for receiving the shank of a nail or other fastener for securing the panels in place.

An exterior, deep embossed, shingle lap siding system for building well and roof structures comprising rectangular building panels having a decorative outer weather resistant surface embossed to resemble, when assembled, a plurality of rows of shingle elements laid side-by-side, said weather resistant outer surface including a lower edge portion projecting downwardly below the upper edge portion of the next subjacent row and having an irregular lower edge embossed to resemble the lower edges of a row of variable length shingles placed side-by-side. A method for making said rectangular building panels includes the steps of deep embossing a plurality of rows of said shingle elements on an integral sheet of pressed wood fibers or other suitable building material, the forming of a discontinuity of irregular appearance between adjacent rows and reducing the thickness of the lower edge of each row to separate the adjacent rows while providing an area of reduced thickness for overlapping adjacent rows of said building panels.
