Compositions and methods for the detection, prevention, or treatment of anthrax or other infectious diseases. In one aspect, the present invention provides methods for immunizing humans or animals againstor other capsulated pathogens. The methods include administering a capsular polypeptide of a pathogen of interest and a CD40 agonist to a human or animal. The capsular polypeptide or the CD40 agonist is administered in such an amount or frequency that an immunoprotective response can be elicited in the human or animal against the pathogen of interest. In another aspect, the present invention provides methods of using passive immunization with anti-capsular polypeptide antibodies to prevent or treat infections caused byor other pathogens. In yet another aspect, the present invention provides methods useful for diagnosis of anthrax by detection of capsular polypeptide in serum or other biological samples.

Compositions and methods for detection, prevention, and treatment of anthrax and other infectious diseases

The invention provides a method of treating or preventing a pathologic state in a mammal. The method comprises administering to the mammal a promoter of T-cell expansion and an inducer of CD40 stimulation, wherein CD40 is stimulated on cells of the immune system. The promoter of T-cell expansion and inducer of CD40 stimulation are administered in synergistically effective amounts to treat or prevent the pathologic state in the mammal. The invention also provides a method of assessing the effectiveness of treatment of a pathologic state in a mammal, wherein the mammal has been administered a promoter of T-cell expansion and an inducer of CD40 stimulation, wherein CD40 is stimulated on cells of the immune system. The method comprises measuring the level of at least one antibody in a test sample obtained from the mammal, which at least one antibody is specific for an antigen that is known to be associated with the pathologic state, and wherein the level of the at least one antibody is indicative of the effectiveness of treatment of the pathologic state in the mammal.

A delivery system for dispensing controlled amounts of liquid or powder has two slidingly engaged parts which are held together as a single unit. The system is particularly useful for delivering powdered solidifying agents to closed medical waste containment systems. Because medical waste container lids include different sized ports, including relatively large diameter pour spouts and relatively small diameter ortho ports, the delivery system is provided with means for selectively coupling to either pour spouts or ortho ports, vastly increasing the adaptability of the delivery system to given container lids loosed by pushing one of the two parts toward the other until a valve plug in the upper part of the system is received within an aperture of a valve seal membrane in the lower part of the system. The system is opened by pulling one part of the system away from the other using the sliding engagement means so that the valve plug exits the aperture in the valve seal membrane. Interior contoured walls prevent undesired collection of powder within the system, the relative orientation of the two parts of the system is adjustable to control the rate of flow of powder, and the system is particularly suitable for introducing powdered desiccants into medical waste containers without exposing the contents of the waste containers to the surrounding environment.

Chemotactic activity of defensins and CAP37 is disclosed. Methods of treatment associated with such activity and compositions for such treatment are also provided.

There is disclosed a method of treating a mammal afflicted with a disease characterized by neoplastic cells that express CD40, comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of a CD40 binding protein in a pharmaceutically acceptable buffer. CD40 binding proteins include monoclonal antibodies to CD40, and CD40 ligand. CD40 binding proteins may also be used to prevent disease characterized by neoplastic cells that express CD40, in individuals at risk for such disease.

A non-pollution motor powered from a source of a low pressure liquified cryogenic is disclosed. A means for converting, upon demand, a quantity of the cryogenic into a high pressure gas is connected between a gas expander and a storage volume tank. The high pressure gas stored in the volume tank is used to power a gas turbine motor. The gas turbine in turn drives a DC-generator to produce a voltage that both charges a battery pack and drives an output DC-drive motor. When the battery pack is fully charged, the gas turbine is turned off, and the DC-drive motor is powered solely from the battery pack. When the batteries have discharged, the turbine is turned on to drive the DC-generator once again. Both the DC-generator and the DC-drive motor are contained in the cryogenic in heat exchange relationship to cool the units to essentially the temperature of the cryogenic.
