An apparatus for jarring a portion of drill string lodged within a borehole, by jarring downhole using tension only, including a first member for attaching a first lower end of the apparatus to the upper end of the lodged tool or pipe through a threadable attachment; a second member for attaching a second end of the apparatus to a drill string on its upper end portion; a third anvil or hammer member which is triggered by spring having stored compressional force transferred by tension from the drill string to the apparatus when the drill string is pulled upward. There is also provided an actuator for rapidly releasing the tension force provided by the spring downward onto the stuck pipe in order to provide an impacting, downward force onto the pipe in an effort to dislodge the pipe. There is further provided a slow release mechanism for slowly releasing the tension force stored by the spring in the event the tool is not fired downhole.

Downward energized motion jars

A gear driven four cycle, opposed, internal combustion engine with pairs of twin pistons connected by a semi-rigid shaft converts reciprocating motion to rotary torque by segmented upper and lower rack and pinion gears which alternate left and right, above and below, with a rocking rack motion at the precise centerline of the piston travel. Central oscillating arms with pairs of translating, rotating cranks, on each side of the twin pistons, smoothly reverse the piston directions without stressing the rack and pinion gear drives. Lateral loads and friction from the piston to the cylinder walls are eliminated. The equivalent torque developed is more than quadruple that of a conventional crankshaft design. The parallel twin cylinders are connected by a common rotary valve at each end of the opposed cylinders. Each cylinder houses a spherical rotary valve with an internal flow baffle which is connected to companion rotary valves by concentric shafts. The sphere is sealed with concentric piston rings inserted into a donut compression head at the top of the cylinder, below the large diameter intake and exhaust manifolds. The rotary valve, the drive pinions and the pistons are interconnected by gears for one full rotation per four cycle power stroke. Improved supercharged intake and exhaust flows are realized by the gently curved directional flow of the spherical valve over that of conventional plunger types of valves. Exhaust gas scavenging is enhanced by the overlapping intake stroke of the baffled spherical valve. Simplified manufacture, elimination of sliding friction, low weight, and multiple torque per horsepower are claimed.

Amphibious aircraft

The critical loss of thousands of acres of shoreline, beaches, and wetlands each year is due to the simple loss of one grain of soil, silt, or sand, one grain at a time. The use of very thin precast concrete trunated conical sections, or 'beach-cones' installed with interlocking leak-resistant interstitial 'wave-blocks' in a simple geometric pattern, 'reverse' the daily cycle of build-up and erosion by accelerating the 'build-up' and preventing the recurring 'wash-out' of sandy material picked up and carried out by retreating waves. The beach-cone geometry smoothly absorbs the energy of the sand-carried waves, dispersing the energy of the wave and retaining the material deposited into the center of the 'beach-cones'. This process begins at the next 'high-tide' after installation. The critical erosional effect of wave 'undertow' is eliminated. In addition, the blockage effect of a row of beach cones builds up a new 'beach' on the shore-side of the installation when the 'cones' are installed at the water's edge at low tide.

As part of a well derrick system using pair of elongated hydraulic cylinders mounted on the derrick face for well pipe elevating, in which an equalizer beam bridges the cylinder ram heads to maintain equality of advance of the rams, the beam being pivoted on a horizontal pivot above the ram heads, the beam carries a lower centrally aligned horizontal pivot sheave means from which cable means extend downwardly to suspend a travelling beam from which depend any of various pipe manipulating tools. In some species additional sheave means on the travelling beam and on an intermediate fixed beam provide for multiple wrappings of the cable means whereby force or distance multiplication may be obtained.

Hydraulic well derrick with cable lifts

A power plant for the generation of electricity from the flow of water currents uses turbine wheels within nozzles submerged in the water current, anchored to the bottom of the water course, as for example, the ocean, and self-buoyed to a level well below the water surface. Pairs of counter-rotating turbines are supported by their rims, which bear against friction drive wheels, which in turn drive electrical generators contained in water-tight machine rooms within the wall of the nozzle. A structural design is disclosed, providing for the building of modules of the nozzle ashore, which modules may then be barged to the deep-water site for assembly into the whole power plant.

Submarine turbine power plant

As part of a well derrick system using pairs of elongated hydraulic cylinders mounted on the derrick face for well pipe elevating, in which an equalizer beam bridges the cylinder ram heads to maintain equality of advance of the rams, the beam being pivoted on a horizontal pivot above the ram heads, the beam carries a lower centrally aligned horizontal pivot sheave from which a cable extends downwardly to suspend a travelling beam from which depend any of various pipe manipulating tools. In some species additional sheave means on the travelling beam and on an intermediate fixed beam provide for multiple wrappings of the cable whereby force or distance multiplication may be obtained.

Power is mechanically transmitted from a tethered airship carrying wind turbines to electrical generators on the ground at the anchor point of the tether, by the use of endless power-transmission cables bridging between drive sheaves at the turbine wheels and driven sheaves at the generators. Tether adjustments, cable tensioning, and wind direction changes are provided for the ground apparatus. A tubular aircraft with recess in the tube wall, carrying bearings on which the rims of the turbine wheels ride, is also claimed.

Airship power turbine

A turbine wheel on a horizontal axis is coaxially mounted within a primary nozzle, for support in a fluid current below a platform carrying electrical power generation equipment. The turbine wheel and primary nozzle are submerged and oriented to enable flow of a portion of fluid current through the nozzle and past the turbine wheel. The turbine wheel comprises a shroud-ring rim, a set of blades extending inwardly toward the axis, the blades being mounted at their outer ends on the inside of the rim, and at their inner ends on the outside of an axial hub. Each blade has its longitudinal tensile elements shaped in the form of part of a relaxed catenary, extending from rim to hub, with sufficient bow in the direction of force of fluid current on the blade to provide a practical wheel of reasonable cost. Struts and strut vanes supporting hub elements within the nozzle may also be of relaxed catenary configuration.

A fluid-current energy-conversion plant, especially useful for electricity generation, utilizing an axial flow turbine as the energy conversion element, has self-inflated flexible collector elements for capturing a portion of the fluid current, increasing its velocity, guiding at least some of each portion into the turbine's mouth, then returning the captured flow into the stream.

A deep underwater sphere is constructed of a plurality of spherical sections. Each of these sections has a spherical shaped frame made of a plurality of radially arranged trusses with an outer metal shell and an inner metal shell attached to the frame. Adjacent sections are interconnected by connecting selected trusses from each of the sections together. The space between the inner and outer metal shells is filled with a high density mixture which serves to impart resistance to compressional forces placed on the sphere and additionally serves as a ballast for securing the proper specific gravity for sinking of the sphere.

Deep underwater sphere

A turbine wheel on a horizontal shaft is coaxially mounted within a primary nozzle, for support in a river current below a platform carrying electrical power generation equipment. The turbine shaft and primary nozzle are submerged and oriented to enable flow of a portion of river current through the nozzle and past the turbine wheel. The external surface of the nozzle is shaped and has structure to accelerate and/or direct the flow of the adjacent surrounding maintstream river current in a manner to generate a sheath which aids the efflux of that portion of the river current which has passed through the turbine. Part of the said structure is a secondary nozzle surrounding the primary nozzle; the secondary nozzle is arranged to accentuate the control of the surrounding mainstream river current. Bearing means, support means, power take-off means, speed control means and blade shapes are disclosed.
